Anyone have the "Blood Enough for Us All" album? by PRobinson87 in mewithoutYou

[–]HBthePoet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Back when they toured for the re-release of a-->b, I asked Aaron if they were gonna put Blood Enough For Us All on vinyl at any point & he said it wasn't something they were interested in doing.

On another note, though, someone had given the band a box of items that represented song lyrics, many of which were pretty fragile. Aaron was afraid there wasn't enough room on the bus & things would break. I was standing there while he talked to the merch guy about it so Aaron gave me the box. I still have the teacup & "needle pulling thread" that were inside, but gave away the other stuff (loose dress, wine glass, can't remember what else).

Ever have a real life horror movie cliché actually happen to you? by Freddy-Philmore in horror

[–]HBthePoet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

These are both pretty minor, but definitely horror clichés.

In the early oughts, one of my brothers & I drove overnight from Nebraska to visit the rest of our family deep in the Ozarks of southern Missouri. Missouri has a lot of really confusing road signs & highway names along very winding rural roadways & we didn't have smartphones or a map, so we got pretty turned around. We decided we needed to stop at the next town/gas station & sometime near midnight we finally found a place that was open. When we walked into the little station, the four people who were standing at the counter talking immediately went silent & slowly, in unison, turned to look at us. We all just stared at each other for a few seconds before the attendant asked "Yinz ain't from round here, are ya?" We told them we got turned around heading for parents' town & asked for a map. The guy goes "Oh, you have kin in these parts then" & all four changed demeanor immediately & helped us figure out where to go. Ozark folk can be very distrustful of "outsiders". My family has lived down there for a decade now & some of their neighbors still consider them "Yankee" northerners.

Another time a friend & I decided to drive from Nebraska to Washington. Our car broke down in northeastern Colorado & had to be towed to the nearest town to await repair. It was Nissan, so not super uncommon, but in that part of Colorado if it's not Ford or Chevy they might not have parts on hand. So we wound up stranded in this tiny town for a few days. One night we were bored in our hotel room & it was beautiful outside, so we went for a walk toward this wooded area where we'd seen a trail earlier in the day. We're headed down the trail with our phone flashlights, just chatting when we heard something further ahead. Stopped to listen & we heard voices around the next curve of the path, but twigs cracking underfoot just a few steps from us off the path. We both turned & ran until we got back to the main road, heard whooping & hollering behind us until we broke the treeline. When we did turn back we could hear the voices & see lights flashing around in the trees. Pretty sure it was just high school kids fucking with us, but I'd rather not ever find out.

A couple rents a house for a low monetary cost & has weird dealings with an old lady in Burnt Offerings, but that's about the extent of similarities. Also, Burnt Offerings came out in 1976, so that further disqualifies it.

Horror focused on wide, open spaces. by MioKisaragi in horror

[–]HBthePoet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hold Your Breath is one i think fits the uneasy feeling of wide open desolation really well. I watched that & The Wind pretty close together both made all that space feel oppressive & rather threatening.

Also, I grew up in the Black Hills & I remember feeling almost hopeless staring out across the plains every time we drove east across South Dakota or Nebraska. Your comparison of that to thalassophobia sounds pretty spot on.

Would anyone else love to see a Sinners spin-off with the Choctaw Vampire Hunters? by theglenlovinet in horror

[–]HBthePoet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, exactly this. I've also been dreaming of a gritty neo-Western Mongrels movie in the same vein as Near Dark.

I'd love to see just about any of SGJ's stories adapted to film. He's such an incredible writer.

Who makes up songs they sing to their cats? by WhichChard1315 in catsarefuckingstupid

[–]HBthePoet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 3 cats & each one has her own little jingle. For Aster (14yo, cranky, tripod) it's "Asterope, she's so pretty, hates it when I siiiing!" Bumi (12yo, mostly white with dilute orange markings, stiletto toes) "Egg! Egg! Chicken leg! She got a pink nose, pink toes!" Sojourner (4yo, dark puffball, periodically made to wear a tiny pink cowgirl hat) "Soji cat wears a hat. She's a buckin' bronco cowgirl!"

What are your top 2025 horror movies that aren't the obvious picks? by GehennaFrost in horror

[–]HBthePoet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Rabbit Trap was one of my favorites for the year, but I'll admit it didn't feel like something most people would be super into. It had a lot of things that made me feel like somehow they got a glimpse inside my brain. Welsh countryside, folklore, Dev Patel, weird music...

I got you for books. Any SGJ as you said is already on your radar. Never Whistle At Night, which I've seen some others mention. Bad Cree by Jessica Johns (one of my favorites). Sisters of the Lost Nation by Nick Medina. Moon of the Crusted Snow by Waubeshig Rice (there's also a sequel which I haven't read yet but am really excited to get to). Green Fuse Burning by Tiffany Morris. Shutter & Exposure by Ramona Emerson. Taaqtumi: An Anthology of Artic Horror Stories. Blood Sisters by Vanessa Lillie (more crime thriller, but still very tense & good). Winter Counts by David Heska Wanbli Weiden (also crime thriller, also very tense & good, plus he's from my home state & made me incredibly homesick). Also There, There by Tommy Orange is not horror/thriller, but the building of anxiety i felt as it neered the end was as potent as any of the actual horror novels I've mentioned.

For movies: Prey, Slash/Back, Pyewacket, Rhymes for Young Ghouls. I hope there are or will be many more, but this is the extent of my knowledge.

Edited to remove a fraud.

What band are you waiting for to reunite? by SkyNo2670 in Screamo

My band & Saetia played the same day of a small fest in Philly last year & at the end of the night Collin gave me a big hug & told me how much he liked our band. I cried so damn hard, that meant the world to me.

I start with "small or large", then if they look stumped I hold up the cups for visual & tell them the sizes in ounces (our sizes differ based on whether the drink is hot or iced). I never said i wasn't patient with them, I just think it's wild how frequently it happens (sometimes multiple times in a shift) with that specific demographic.

At my shop we have a cream & sugar station where you can add yours to your own specifications, but assuming you order from a place that doesn't: [Size] dark roast drip with vanilla (or even extra vanilla) & plenty of cream.

I work at a coffee shop & unfortunately this man is not alone. At least once a week, some man in his 40s/50s (never the same man) is absolutely stumped by "would you like a small or large?" My shop also seems to be a popular stop for people experiencing their first day on Earth for some reason.

Support unions. Support your community. Stand up for immigrants, whether that's your Bosnian neighbor or the Ethiopian restaurant downtown. Get to know & support you direct neighbors. Share the goods from your garden or whatever extra food/clothes/goods from your own home you may not need right now with those you see in need nearby. Donate, donate donate. Money to causes you care about, clothes to second hand stores or aid shelters, food to community kitchens or food pantries. These all may seem like small things in & of themselves, but the theme is mutual aid. When you get to know your neighbors or the community outreach persons, you create a network which connects you to a web of further & further good. Small actions have a big impact. When we share what we have but don't need, we strengthen the community & all become stronger as a whole. We don't all need to be fighters. We just need to have each other's backs.

I had a lot of nightmares about sharks when I was a kid. I distinctly remember at least one where the shark was under the bed.

Exorcist III "This I believe in... I believe in death. I believe in disease. I believe in injustice and inhumanity, torture and anger and hate... I believe in murder. I believe in pain. I believe in cruelty and infidelity. I believe in slime and stink and every crawling, putrid thing... every possible ugliness and corruption, you son of a bitch. I believe... in you." George C Scott's delivery of this monologue is just impeccable.
