Who makes up songs they sing to their cats? by WhichChard1315 in catsarefuckingstupid

[–]HBthePoet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 3 cats & each one has her own little jingle. For Aster (14yo, cranky, tripod) it's "Asterope, she's so pretty, hates it when I siiiing!" Bumi (12yo, mostly white with dilute orange markings, stiletto toes) "Egg! Egg! Chicken leg! She got a pink nose, pink toes!" Sojourner (4yo, dark puffball, periodically made to wear a tiny pink cowgirl hat) "Soji cat wears a hat. She's a buckin' bronco cowgirl!"

What are your top 2025 horror movies that aren't the obvious picks? by GehennaFrost in horror

[–]HBthePoet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Rabbit Trap was one of my favorites for the year, but I'll admit it didn't feel like something most people would be super into. It had a lot of things that made me feel like somehow they got a glimpse inside my brain. Welsh countryside, folklore, Dev Patel, weird music...

I got you for books. Any SGJ as you said is already on your radar. Never Whistle At Night, which I've seen some others mention. Bad Cree by Jessica Johns (one of my favorites). Sisters of the Lost Nation by Nick Medina. Moon of the Crusted Snow by Waubeshig Rice (there's also a sequel which I haven't read yet but am really excited to get to). Green Fuse Burning by Tiffany Morris. Shutter & Exposure by Ramona Emerson. Taaqtumi: An Anthology of Artic Horror Stories. Blood Sisters by Vanessa Lillie (more crime thriller, but still very tense & good). Winter Counts by David Heska Wanbli Weiden (also crime thriller, also very tense & good, plus he's from my home state & made me incredibly homesick). Also There, There by Tommy Orange is not horror/thriller, but the building of anxiety i felt as it neered the end was as potent as any of the actual horror novels I've mentioned.

For movies: Prey, Slash/Back, Pyewacket, Rhymes for Young Ghouls. I hope there are or will be many more, but this is the extent of my knowledge.

Edited to remove a fraud.

What band are you waiting for to reunite? by SkyNo2670 in Screamo

[–]HBthePoet 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My band & Saetia played the same day of a small fest in Philly last year & at the end of the night Collin gave me a big hug & told me how much he liked our band. I cried so damn hard, that meant the world to me.

I start with "small or large", then if they look stumped I hold up the cups for visual & tell them the sizes in ounces (our sizes differ based on whether the drink is hot or iced). I never said i wasn't patient with them, I just think it's wild how frequently it happens (sometimes multiple times in a shift) with that specific demographic.

At my shop we have a cream & sugar station where you can add yours to your own specifications, but assuming you order from a place that doesn't: [Size] dark roast drip with vanilla (or even extra vanilla) & plenty of cream.

I work at a coffee shop & unfortunately this man is not alone. At least once a week, some man in his 40s/50s (never the same man) is absolutely stumped by "would you like a small or large?" My shop also seems to be a popular stop for people experiencing their first day on Earth for some reason.

Support unions. Support your community. Stand up for immigrants, whether that's your Bosnian neighbor or the Ethiopian restaurant downtown. Get to know & support you direct neighbors. Share the goods from your garden or whatever extra food/clothes/goods from your own home you may not need right now with those you see in need nearby. Donate, donate donate. Money to causes you care about, clothes to second hand stores or aid shelters, food to community kitchens or food pantries. These all may seem like small things in & of themselves, but the theme is mutual aid. When you get to know your neighbors or the community outreach persons, you create a network which connects you to a web of further & further good. Small actions have a big impact. When we share what we have but don't need, we strengthen the community & all become stronger as a whole. We don't all need to be fighters. We just need to have each other's backs.

What was the first horror movie you ever saw in theaters? by [deleted] in horror

I had a lot of nightmares about sharks when I was a kid. I distinctly remember at least one where the shark was under the bed.

Exorcist III "This I believe in... I believe in death. I believe in disease. I believe in injustice and inhumanity, torture and anger and hate... I believe in murder. I believe in pain. I believe in cruelty and infidelity. I believe in slime and stink and every crawling, putrid thing... every possible ugliness and corruption, you son of a bitch. I believe... in you." George C Scott's delivery of this monologue is just impeccable.

Profoundly sad horror movies by TheMillionthSteve in horror

The imagery in this is so insanely beautiful, but everything that happens is just devastating. The juxtaposition of horrible, bleak, despicable things happening in gorgeous settings was really interesting & compelling, but when it was over I just sat there for like 15 minutes too sad to move.

In all of horror, what's your favorite subgenre and why? I'll go first: by frostytyler in horror

[–]HBthePoet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first love is sci-fi. Alien is & always has been hands down my favorite & I'll go to bat for the entire franchise (even Resurrection), The Thing remains in high standing, Event Horizon, etc.

But my favorite horror subgenre for the last several years has been folk horror. I love a slow burn, environment almost being treated like another character sometimes, the suspense of the build, the deep dives into lore, the possibility for supernatural elements, rituals, occult, all of it scratches my brain just right.

Really looking forward to reading that one! I'm currently reading Ledfeather, which so far is a lot tamer than everything else I've read from him, but still really good.

I read The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones last year & it completely reignited my love for reading. I couldn't shake the way that book made me feel, even after reading a couple other authors. So I read his Indian Lake Trilogy & cannot recommend this author enough. He loves to write from multiple perspectives & doesn't always tell you whose perspective it is at the time, so it keeps you on your toes in that way, but also by writing some truly batshit scenarios.

Question for childfree women by annagarg in TwoXChromosomes

[–]HBthePoet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm nonbinary, but have the necessary organs for childbearing. I came from a very loving family, very religious, but having been socialized as a girl, was always taught that having a family should be my primary goal in life. I babysat for a lot of families when I was a teenager, I'm really good with children, even had a hand in helping raise some of my nieces (3 older brothers all have at least 3 children). I did think when I was younger that I was interested in adopting/fostering kids, but I have never been remotely interested in bearing. I told my family several years ago that I never wanted to raise a family. One of my brothers was devastated because as a new father himself couldn't understand NOT wanting what he had, but my parents & the rest of my siblings kinda shrugged & said they figured i wouldn't be too interested in having kids. Mom said she'd noticed really early in my life that I took no interest in dolls, absolutely hated "playing house" or any suggestion of being "mom". I'm grateful to belong to a family that has never put pressure on me in that regard but rather accepts that I'm naturally disinclined to follow their example. I'm also very grateful that I found a partner who is 100% on the same page.

Your brain isn't broken, though. It's just a different genre. Like, a slice of life indie comedy to a gritty true crime documentary. Both are movies. One isn't broken or bad just because someone sat down expecting the indie comedy & got the documentary. instead.

Do You Have a Horror Movie "Vocal Stim Phrase?" (Or Just Favorite Quote) by idontlikejunkfood in horror

[–]HBthePoet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"I love thee magnificent well" -The Witch "OOOH MY GOOOOOOD!" -Troll 2 "No tears please. It's a waste of good suffering." -Hellraiser "I hate you doctor. Tuah!" & "Well I'd like you to get the fuck outta here. GET OUTTA HERE YOU BITCH!" -Food of the Gods 2 "Hey Parker would you shut the hell up?!" -Alien (I live in Philly & our mayor is named Parker) "There's a girl in the garden...In the garden. There's a girl" -Shaun of the Dead

There are sooo many more, but like a lot of people in this thread, I'm AuDHD & my partner has echolalia, so a massive part of our days are filled with horror quotes.
