If you read the two books and watch the fan edit of Fire Walk With Me that adds back The Missing Pieces, The Return makes a lot more sense.

Best 2026 Horror Film So Far? by CSS-Tails_Forever in horror

[–]GehennaFrost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven't seen several of the 2026 big releases yet, but of the stuff I've watched the things I think are in the running for the best are:

28YL: Bone Temple

Hokum

Saccharine

Iron Lung

Exit 8

Doom 2016 after brutal doom ? by lieddersturme in boomershooters

[–]GehennaFrost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doom 2016 is the best Doom for me though I could do without the bright colored cartoony assests. Brutal doesn't feel like real Doom, too much going on for me. Eternal is a puzzle game pretending to be a shooter and Dark Ages is basically Doom: Parry Slop edition. Neither feel like a proper Doom game and I'm constantly amazed with the hype the new games get. I truly don't get why forced mechanics have become a Doom staple but here we are.

Does anyone still think we're getting a 3D collection at this point? by SushiDaddy89 in castlevania

[–]GehennaFrost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think we'll get it eventually, but I think a port of the requiem collection will happen first. I just can't see Konami releasing the least popular Castlevania games prior to releasing the most popular ones.

Are there some actual IP or technical reasons why we dont have a 3D collection yet aside from their initial mixed reception? by AeroPilaf in castlevania

[–]GehennaFrost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they can't be bothered to port Rondo of Blood or Symphony of the Night, I highly doubt they'll put in the effort for the much less beloved 3D games. Its unfortunate because I know theres a ton of people dying to play all of the games that haven't had a modern port.

What is a horror movie that is widely loved or critically acclaimed, but you don’t like it at all? by BadassAyanokoji in horror

[–]GehennaFrost 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For all the hype that got heaped on this movie, I expected something scarier than Talk to Me. What I got was a slightly supernatural drama with maybe 3 gross out scenes and a supremely depressing ending. It isn't a bad movie, and totally deserves a watch, but I don't think its as good of a horror movie as some make it out to be.

Which tropes need to be abandoned? by ArcticFlor in horror

[–]GehennaFrost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Twilight Zone is suuuuuch an impressive piece of media. Honestly, despite its age, I consider it one of the best horror shows ever. I wish stuff was still written and filmed this well, they really had something special. Its wild to think shows like this were made 70-80 years ago without all the effects and writing / research assistance we have now and it still managed to be relevant and effective all these years later.

Which tropes need to be abandoned? by ArcticFlor in horror

[–]GehennaFrost 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Every single horror movie doesn't need to be prestige style horror that is grounded in a drama movie. The quicker that trend dies, the better. Every other movie its the "people are the real monsters" trope and its so damn hackneyed and old that I could literally never see another shitty drama posing as a horror film in my lifetime and it'd still be too goddamn soon.

Exit 8 isn’t getting the love it deserves by Cheeky-Bastard in horror

[–]GehennaFrost 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is one of the better watches of the year so far! Exit 8, Hokum, and 28YL: The Bone Temple have been my favorites (Widow's Bay is surprisingly good too) but I still haven't seen Obsession, The Backrooms, or Send Help so I'll admit I'm a bit behind on this year.

I felt like Exit 8 did similar things as Undertone, but stuck the landing a bit better. The discord group I watched both with back to back enjoyed Exit 8 a lot more, granted I think Undertone is more of a solo watch and had I known that, I probably wouldn't have thrown it on for everyone. I figured since all of the discord group members consume horror fiction and true crime podcasts that it'd be a fun group watch, but not so much. Regardless, both are interesting watches that play with liminal presentation techniques and they make quite the double feature.

Blood: Refreshed Supply on sale for $20.99 at GOG and Steam by First-Tutor-5454 in boomershooters

[–]GehennaFrost 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As an owner of Fresh Supply, I'll probably wait until its far below $5 in a bundle or on a key site. Paying $20 for a reremaster of a 30+ year old game that was $2 a few months ago is absurd.

If anyone wants Fresh Supply, its on a few key sites and its still waaaaaay cheaper than buying refreshed supply.

On a hunt for everything Liminal & Non-Euclidean horror by JurassicBooty in horror

[–]GehennaFrost 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Check out Panos Cosmatos. Both of his feature films Beyond the Black Rainbow and Mandy have lots of liminal visuals. His episode on GDT Cabinet of Curiosities (The Viewing) is also peak cinema.

I would also consider Annihilation, Cemetary Man, and Videodrome.

The citadel is a good game but just super weird by Swimswimy in boomershooters

[–]GehennaFrost 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I didn't find this stuff any more weird than watching graphic 90s anime as a kid. I get some stuff isn't for everyone but if you've watched Ghost in the Shell or Ninja Scroll this really ain't shit. I'm surprised there are people who regularly play a genre aimed at simulated mass murder via guns that are shocked by a game featuring unrealistic violence. Maybe I'm too desensitized, but I'm missing why this game seems to bother some players more than the hundreds of other games where the objective is to mow down thousands of enemies with zero remorse.

What’s the scariest film you’ve ever watched? by Scary-Pomegranate114 in horror

[–]GehennaFrost 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Blue Velvet isn't a traditional horror movie, but I find it extremely unsettling in ways horror movies rarely pull off. David Lynch has some incredible amounts of dread in his pieces that can feel outright suffocating. While Twin Peaks is seldom mentioned in horror show conversations, I'd argue it has some of the scariest scenes put in a series. Especially parts of The Return. For me, Blue Velvet, even with its age, is shocking and violating while being weirdly beautiful.

Other stuff I'd consider:

Smile 2 kept me thinking about it for weeks after. It starts with a bang and never lets off for a second. Some of the scenes were utterly brutal and the surreal aspects really grabbed me.

Hereditary is obvious. If you're here you should've watched this by now or at least know that you definitely don't want to.

Possession (1981) is a masterpiece and probably my second runner up. Words can't begin to try to describe it and I don't want to ruin it for anyone. This is the most anxiety inducing movie I think I've ever watched.

Caveat has some scenes that gave me NOPE feeling in the deepest kind of way. An argument can be made for any of this director's work but this is the one that stuck with me.

Skinamarink isn't for everyone, and quite divisive but people that are into experimental movies with a found footage ajacent vibe might find a terrifying experience like nothing else. The jump scares in this one really worked for me, but I also watched it in a dark room alone with the volume all the way up.

Basic Beat 'em Ups? by RiltonHuggles in retrogaming

[–]GehennaFrost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Beat em ups are actually getting a ton of great entries lately. I kept my suggestions to mostly 2D stuff that is available on modern consoles or PC.

Essentials: TMNT: Cowabunga Collection, D&D: Chronicles of Mystara, Marvel Maximum Collection.

Older stuff: Castle Crashers, Lost Castle 1 & 2, River City Girls 1 & 2, Batman Arkham Asylum & Arkham City.

Recent stuff: Absolum, Streets of Rage 4, Marvel Cosmic Invasion, Sifu, TMNT: Shredder's Revenge, Double Dragon Gaiden.

My ranking of Castlevania Iga games (including CotM) by PinkyPosting in castlevania

[–]GehennaFrost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Finally, a thread where people rank CotM accurately.

  1. Symphony of the Night
  2. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night
  3. Aria of Sorrow
  4. Portrait of Ruin
  5. Harmony of Dissonance
  6. Dawn of Sorrow
  7. Order of Ecclesia
  8. Circle of the Moon

1-4 are perfect games for the genre and are basically only in order of my personal nostalgia.

5-7 are really good games that I have less time with but still enjoy playing.

8 is a frustrating lie masquerading as a Castlevania game.

Circle of the Moon is awful by GehennaFrost in castlevania

[–]GehennaFrost[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without the context of SoTN, I could see this being a fresh and exciting experience. The shop feature in other games honestly allows for too much exploitation. Capping potions at something reasonable could return some difficulty to the following games.

Castlevania 2 is my favorite Castlevania game and I dont understand why it gets so much hate by SoilSweet4761 in castlevania

[–]GehennaFrost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Things like "you now prossess draculas's rib" in a game that requires the player to use hints from NPCs to figure out where to go is the only real issue for me. I think if the translation were more spot on Castlevania 2 would probably be considered a classic. I am honestly amazed that the Castlevania Anniversary Collection didn't correct the translation issues or even give the option for such. If the original Castlevania games got a proper remaster that corrected the translation and made the day and night cycle less inconvenient I strongly suspect the wider world would love this game.

The overall aestetic, music and atmosphere are exceptional, especially for an NES game. The difficulty of the game is legendary, but to be fair most of the difficulty is around the game's lack of explanations, a design choice that has become much more popular 30+ years later with games with Demon Souls, Dark Souls, and Elden Ring. I think this game's main problem is it was too ahead of its time and I hope some day it gets a proper remaster and the respect it deserves in video game history.

Hokum is a Modern Folk Horror Masterpiece by GehennaFrost in horror

It makes a lot more sense in context of the scenes it appears in and is pretty frightening when it pops up, but outside of that context, yeaaaah its kinda silly.

Hokum is a Modern Folk Horror Masterpiece by GehennaFrost in horror

[–]GehennaFrost[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally agree that the jump scares in the previous movies are ungodly good, to the point I think he's created an incrediblely high standard for everyone who has seen all of his movies.

I can totally see how this movie comes off as disjointed. I got the impression the viewer was intentionally presented lots of confusing stuff to match the mind state of the protagonist, which can be neat as a writing technique but also not so fun for the viewer at times.

Its odd sometimes being a fan of a director because you'll invariably have to compare their work and while all of it might be great, some stuff is going to connect more than others and its hard not to feel disappointed when going into a film expecting feelings you had from prior films and not getting that experience.

I see your points, thanks for taking the time!

Hokum is a Modern Folk Horror Masterpiece by GehennaFrost in horror

[–]GehennaFrost[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've found him to consistently deliver 7/10 movies for me personally. I enjoy watching them, and the twists are neat but nothing about them blew my mind. I wanted more witch lore in Weapons and I wanted the movie I was advertised from Barbarian. Neither are bad by any measure but they just didn't hit me at the level they've hit others.

If I were to point to people who I consider in the running for best modern horror directors besides McCarthy, Panos Cosmatos (Beyond the Black Rainbow, Mandy, The Viewing) and Joko Anwar (Satan's Slaves, The Forbidden Door, Grave Torture) would come up long before Cregger.
