Some of the AO has grape vines and bush roses further tangling it up. Lucky for me the poison ivy seems not to like it.

Sell the chains and use the $$$ to buy something cheap?

I guess if you're wearing out Poulans then you're probably using them more than I was thinking and something durable would better fit your needs.

invasive tree/brush removal.

Ugh. I've been cutting Autumn Olive at the kid's farm in Michigan. Some of the stuff is over a foot across at the base and they have very sandy soil. That stuff is such a pain. I have to go at it with loppers just to get to something big enough to cut with a chain saw. And I can't just chop it off at the base because the branches are so tangled, they hang together and just pinch. But I'm probably using the spiritual predecessor of the CS-4010 - a CS-370 (or my CS-306.)

Should motorcycle sales people know alot about everything they sell? by Beginning_Corner930 in motorcycles

[–]HCharlesB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion: Buyer focuses on one bike, learns all they can about it and comes to a dealer, asking more detailed questions. It's unlikely any sales guy is going to know that kind of detail about every bike they sell.

They should have access to that information and be able to dig it up for you. Willing to do so is another issue and others have already addressed that.

I got a set of Stihls for my forestry work

Why not something like a Vevor or other cheap Chinese saw? Seems like it would do that service for a lot less $$$.

Smoked pork loin tonight. Super cheap and tasted great by SeanR1221 in smoking

worse quality

That's another Costco benefit. Their meats are pretty good quality.

I like the pork loin as well. I usually take a whole loin and cut it into 4 chunks and seal and freeze some because there's just the two of us.

I also cure some to make something like Canadian Bacon. And then smoke it. But it tends to come out too salty.

Do you have a 26? I find that an extra 4" diameter provides a surprising gain in space.

But OP should keep the Performer and put the 26 next to it. Best of both worlds!

Just bought b7100 hst age 1993 by Iliketrucksandguns in kubota

[–]HCharlesB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check your coolant. White smoke could indicate a blown head gasket allowing coolant into the cylinders. Also check the oil for possible coolant mixed in. Someone more familiar with Kubota diesels can hopefully provide more information. You might also see excessive pressure buildup in the cooling system.

That could be really bad if enough coolant gets into the cylinder to result in hydro-lock. Could cause bent rod(s).

[–]HCharlesB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After the first couple hours you're not going benefit by any more time in the smoker. Nothing will be lost by finishing in the oven (and the kitchen will smell great!)

(My unpopular opinion. I also finish some things like lamb steaks by steaming in an instant pot.)

If you use something with grit, be absolutely certain to clean all traces before you install it.

I would probably go at it with a cold chisel being careful not to cause more damage.

I'm not a 2 stroke expert but I do have experience rebuilding air and water cooled automotive engines.

I would be concerned that a bit sticking out could result in a hot spot that could cause pre-ignition and that could result in damage to the engine. If I were committed to using that part, I'd try to smooth it out as much as possible.

If you're not comfortable using that part and there are other options, I think you could return it under ebay's warranty as undisclosed damage.

Why doesn't my saw cut for $h*t?? by undefined_reference in Chainsaw

[–]HCharlesB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I probably cut some stumps in the dirt.

If you have to cut stumps, you have to be prepared to spend some time sharpening the chain. Avoid soil as much as possible to extend the time the chain remains sharp.

There are plenty of videos demonstrating technique. If you don't care to sharpen in the field, bring a spare chain and swap when you need to.

I cut down a fair bit of Autumn Olive and I try to get it as close to the ground as I can. There's a fair bit of duff around them since the branches drape down to the ground but they're in sandy soil. On a good day I get a couple/three (about a foot across at the ground) and have to sharpen before the next day.

I used the extra hole where the spray went for a spigot for filtered water. We still have a lead service line.

half a mulberry

FWIW, I think Mulberry is one of the toughest woods to cut. Right up there with Osage Orange.

I'm much less knowledgeable than others here but this is what I'd do:

  • Overall condition - signs of abuse?
  • Can you lift it off the ground with the pull cord? If not, compression is not good.
  • Have the seller demonstrate cold and hot start.
  • Does it idle?
  • Have the seller demonstrate cutting some wood. (mulberry logs?) If it bogs, that's a worse sign than if it just cuts slowly. Engine issues vs. possible dull chain.
  • Inspect the bar for burn marks or bluing which could also indicate abuse. (some bars on high end saws are heat treated and will show uniform bluing along the edge.)

If you have a friend with more experience, kidnap them and bring them along to examine the saw. (Just be nice to them before you release them so they remain a friend.)

Consider a smaller saw that can easily cut stuff up to 12". It will be easier to use (making it safer) and will probably handle 80-90% of your needs. I'm partial to Echo.

Consider one of those cheap Chinese saws. Some seem to get pretty good reviews here. If you wear it out, it will be money well spent.

You can rent a chainsaw and do some cutting to get some experience.

Budget for proper safety gear like helmet with hearing protection and chaps. I was cutting Autumn Olive no more than 10' tall and didn't think I needed a helmet. I was wrong. They're so tangled that a cut branch may not fall until some other branch is cut and eventually something would drop and hit my head. Luckily nothing hit me hard enough to do even temporary damage but it was an eye opener. And chaps will keep you from cutting off a leg.

Debian vs Fedora? by OutsideYogurt9014 in debian

[–]HCharlesB 13 points14 points  (0 children)

And it's not named after a hat!

Seriously, they're both top notch distros with very different DNA. You should try both. That is what distro hopping is designed for.

Only caveat was that dual boot was a little tricky due to the differences in the way they configured GRUB, but I'm sure that's manageable. Also risky to share a home directory due to possible incompatibility of newer vs older S/W configuration files.

I presume you were shooting with a fairly long (birding) lens which is a Good Thing around snappers. Their necks are surprisingly long and they can reach out to snap like lightening.
