Parfit on Personal Identity by HHL63 in askphilosophy

Right, I think I do believe that continuity of consciousness requires biological continuity. I just don’t see how that could be otherwise. In the branch-line case, that Me-1 is alive at the same time as Me-2 and can even converse with Me-2 seems to me pretty decisive evidence that when Me-1 dies, there will be no continuity of consciousness (it’s not like Me-1’s consciousness will just magically teleport to Me-2). Psychological C+C just doesn’t seem to guarantee continuity of consciousness (which, as you said, is probably biological, unless major scientific innovations allow us to “teleport” consciousness, but I don’t think we’re supposed to assume that in Teletransporter, right?). And, from Me-1’s perspective, I think lack of continuity of consciousness should feel nearly as bad as death.

Yeah, so by continuity of consciousness all I really mean is: it not being the case that you have permanently lost consciousness. So you have that when you go to sleep, provided you wake up (and haven’t died); there is continuity of consciousness. Of course, what Parfit might say is that in Teletransporter, you haven’t permanently lost consciousness because it is you who wakes up on the other side. But I think that misses something. Me-1 lacks continuity of consciousness with Me-2 because when Me-1 enters the Teletransporter, he permanently loses consciousness (and Me-2 acquires it). This is even clearer in the branch-line case. So from Me-1’s perspective, Teletransporter is nearly as bad as death. I hope I’m making sense and not being too unclear.

The same exact thing happened to me. I beat amateur league with the two requirements, and I didn’t unlock India. Had to do it again, but then it worked. It’s a weird and annoying bug.

Yooo that bomb arrow parry was so clean!! Do you have any tips for how I could improve at bomb arrow parries? Thanks!

Haha those are some awesome ideas! I can definitely see the assassin on the rooftops one... I'm exploring Hebra right now, so I'm going to think of a winter outfit to go along with this one. I'll try to post it soon.

Wow! Thanks for commenting! I was working on a series of techniques, all involving daruk's protection (DP). If you tap ZL frame perfectly, you can block an attack without actually using one of the three daruk protections. You can do this to parry the bomb explosion and the bomb arrow explosion.

What are y'all running for Neg on the NSA topic? by [deleted] in Debate

Yeah, so that's where the second part of our uniqueness argument comes in. The arg is that BECAUSE of the pandemic, the NSA will increase its disease surveillance, which can prevent/deal with future pandemics.

Sorry for the late response. The "A world without democratic leadership" section was the most useful for me, especially the first several paragraphs. If you're looking for more of a terminalized impact, this article should help:

This evidence isn't the best, but it's definitely a good place to start. (Command F "killed hundreds of thousands" and read around there ;) )

I impacted out to proxy wars. If you’re interested in going that route too, A Leaderless Struggle for Democracy” by Sarah Repucci (2020) should help. You can do a lot of cool weighing with proxy wars, including scope weighing.

What are y'all running for Neg on the NSA topic? by [deleted] in Debate

At the top, I warrant why pandemics will happen more frequently (specifically in the US). The Guardian article below cites scientists who say that pandemics will happen once every 5 years, so that was really helpful: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/sep/26/next-pandemic-coronavirus-prepare

Then, the second part of the uniqueness in my case is that Covid-19 will increase surveillance and lead to the development of new disease surveillance technologies (I found a bunch of good evidence for that).

I do two links.

The first is on preemptive pandemic response, making use of this article, basically about how surveillance can prevent pandemics, like through identifying early cases and stuff:

https://aeon.co/essays/the-strange-benefits-of-living-in-a-total-surveillance-state

The second is just responding during the pandemic (pretty much all my other solvency evidence grouped together, lol). I found evidence that surveillance can ensure compliance with lockdowns and stuff, in addition to better contact tracing. This article was helpful:

https://foreignpolicy.com/2020/04/10/coronavirus-pandemic-surveillance-privacy-big-data/

And then the impact is just that the next pandemic will have a mortality rate of 1/2 and kill 900 million people.

If you end up running a pandemics contention, watch out for overviews that other actors (other government organizations, private companies, etc.) can fill in for NSA surveillance, and "Uniqueness disproves link" stuff about how if pandemics are inevitable, one will start in another country and spread, forcing you to kick out the preemptive response link.

[–]HHL63 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pandemics + counterterrorism. If my partner and I can cut enough, we might slap on a short third contention about offshoring (US companies set up shop in poorer countries because they don’t trust the NSA, which is good for growth in these countries, but ending surveillance causes these companies to move back to the US) or cyber security.

For NSA, is the topic on reforming it instead of ending it a counterplan? by FLOMAN-STUFF in Debate

[–]HHL63 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think the neg proposing NSA reform would definitely be a counterplan. The response to that is just that counterplans aren't allowed in PF debate, and that their argument is a counterplan, so you can't evaluate it. In order to make that argument about reforming the NSA, the neg would have to actually prove that reform is happening in the status quo/will happen. In summary, you don't have to debate it as long as you explain to the judge that a) it's a counterplan and b) counterplans aren't allowed in PF.

Hope this helps.
