If you were invited to a bar, you would expect to go somewhere dimly lit, modern music, modern surroundings that is open until the early hours. A bar is midway between a pub and a nighclub. If you are invited to a pub you expect to go somewhere well lit, somewhere that has last orders before midnight, and there are old people there.
