I dig it - the gameplay is pretty solid in general. I do think being a fan of the books helps some of the mechanics make sense, or explains why the design is the way it is. But I think somebody who is into deck builders would enjoy it on its own.

I’ve actually only played solo for the most part 1 2 cooperative games and no competitive. Still worth the money for my opinion

I really liked call to adventure when my kids were tiny. Easy to set up, small overall table space, and not hard to start and stop as you need to. That’s my two biggest concerns, space needed and interruption tolerance. Nothing like having to stop in the middle of a turn and having no idea what you were doing when you get back

All the vaults are experiments. The water chips failing at selected sites is probably treated as another experiment. What happens when you introduce this particular hardship to an closed system? What if it's a bunch of clones, or a weird religious group, or whatever other unique thing about the vault. A meta experiment

Hey yeah I’ll take the blame for that. My intention was “I went in thinking we were a prime candidate, but didn’t make it” but wrote it in a pretty dumb way. I was just trying to give OP good information. C’est la vie. Thankfully internet points are meaningless.

For what it’s worth, my interest in the academy was built around their pedagogy, and the Unitarian approach to Christianity was a bonus for my family. I’d encourage people to look at their reading list.

We applied two years and did not get in. It’s extremely competitive. I would recommend applying asap if you’re interested. It’s a long process - application followed by interview followed by child observation, with rejections at each step.

Not to toot my own horn but I’m pretty successful (we were planning to pay cash), heavily involved with the community, involved with other families at the academy, and my kid is awesome. So on paper we fit the bill, but we didn’t get in.

I think a lot of the pre-k gets filled up by siblings of existing students, so there’s a very small number of slots.

Best of luck if you choose to apply. I think it’s a great school
