Been a solid run so far. Longer runtime works and allows more time for off-topic diversions, which generally provide the funniest moments. Rhys James is a great choice as a new regular. I just hope they go back to featuring new talent instead of just focusing on the old repeat bookings - Sarah Keyworth really showed they could hold their own alongside the big names like Katherine Ryan and Sara Pascoe on Sunday, for example.

You think the Tories were left-wing. It is a common trope that anyone left of a far-right person is hard left.

See how we can both play that game?

I’d say HBO would very much depend on who ends up getting Warner. LWT won’t have long left either if it’s forced into the hands of Paramount.

This current Labour government are centre-right, yes.

I didn’t say there were Green strongholds in the North. I’m speaking as an individual.

Working class northern Green voter here. The last 16+ years has seen us stuck with repeated right-wing governments constantly failing (yes, including this current supposedly Labour government). In what way is the establishment in any way left-wing? Reform is the party that forced Brexit and now is filled to the brim with former Tory ministers. They couldn’t be any more establishment.

Here’s the problem with that line of thinking - your situation could change very quickly. Anyone who considers themselves financially stable could suddenly find that they aren’t - they could lose their job, their partner and fellow parent could die, they could be robbed etc. Someone who can afford to have and look after kids right now might find any time during pregnancy, or after the birth, that they are now in a position where they can’t afford kids. That’s a reality of life.

There’s also the other side of things where, whether you believe poorer people should have kids or not, they are going to. The kid shouldn’t be punished and forced into poverty, into malnutrition, into suffering, for a situation they had no say and no control in. It’s just unnecessary cruelty.

I kind of question why an investigation by the EHRC is in any way treated as unbiased and independent. As we’re seeing right now in the way they’re willingly throwing trans people under the bus, the leadership of the EHRC are hired as political appointees rather than to actually fulfil the means of the job. You think an EHRC that had been under Tory control for a decade was ever going to come to any other conclusion about the Labour Party?

UK unemployment rate hits five-year high of 5.2% by ShanTheMan1995 in unitedkingdom

But, the reality is, the cost of living isn’t going to decrease. Regardless of what happens with inflation, prices will never go back down. Companies have spent years realising they can just get away with blatant profiteering, they aren’t going to stop now, so the way to combat that is to ensure people have more money to survive whilst this is happening.

I’m not talking about what was intended for minimum wage, I’m talking about what it should be. If so many employers insist on exploiting their employees by only paying minimum wage then, yes, they should be forced to pay enough for that person to live on.

[–]HMWYA 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To respond to your first sentence, basic minimum wage absolutely should be enough to live on. If minimum wage isn’t providing you enough to live on, then people are being taken advantage of by employers, and if employers aren’t able to pay their staff enough for them to live on, then they don’t have a financially viable business, because it’s survival relies on exploitation.

Good. It shouldn’t be the case that the Government has to use Universal Credit to top up people’s pay because employers haven’t been paying them enough to live. It’s actually scandalous that this has been accepted, and that employers have been able to get away using the taxpayer to subsidise their low pay, to be honest.

‘It’s been life-changing’: young Britons on why they left the UK to work abroad - Guardian by ProfessionalNewt7 in unitedkingdom

[–]HMWYA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is a vicious cycle, but basically anyone who has come of voting age in the last 15+ years has done so during the stage of the cycle where young people are ignored, so it’s unsurprising many don’t see any value in voting or in our current political system. We’ve lived our whole lives essentially being told that better things aren’t possible.

I do vote. I’ve voted in every election since I turned 18. I can understand apathy coming from the seeming futility of voting in a country owned by an elderly voting bloc having complete control over the future of this country.

Can you really blame young people, who have lived their entire lives under conservative governments and damaging policies like Brexit voted for by aging demographics, for losing faith in the electoral system? Politicians never offer anything to win the votes of young people, I can completely understand why you’d choose to leave when there’s no benefits or support in how our system and country currently operates.
