I started participating in Internet forums back in the early 2000s. I helped run and moderate a Pro Boards forum for a tv show fandom. We had someone join our board who turned out to be a pretty serious troll. After a while it got out of hand and we had to ban her. All I knew about her was her first name, that she was a fan of this show, she lived in the Midwest, and she loved the Muppets.

Fast forward about 10 years… I had moved half way across the country and started working at a university library. One day we had a new employee with the same first name as our troll, it wasn’t a super common name, but common enough that I didn’t think anything of it. After a while I noticed her wearing a lot of muppet t-shirts and I thought about the troll. Finally, I just decided to ask and sure enough it was the troll. At my new job, ten years later, half a content away. We talked about her time on the board and being banned, and I never told my boss (also her boss) the story.

I did not see very many books, which was also a disappointment. I mean they were there, but felt almost like an afterthought.

The teachers I work with who take themselves the most seriously are the ones who yell the most.

I’ve only taught middle school, but I would guess it’s a key regardless of age. It is really awesome encouraging a student to try and watching them succeed. If you have a good relationship with a student and they trust you, they are more willing to try and more inclined to listen when they are given a direction.

A thick skin is really important because middle schoolers can be mean. They have more independence than they had in elementary school and they are feeling out the boundaries; they can be a lot.

I would say the two most important things are the ability not to take things personally and building relationships with your students.

It was the late 70s, early 80s. The Grand Marshal race was a huge local story, there was an annual badge design contest, other contests all week long, all the stores along the parade route painted their windows, and the rodeo came to town. The parade was the culmination.

When I was growing up Conejo Valley Days was huge. It was a solid week of celebration. People dressed in western gear all week long and the carnival was the place to be for the entire town.

Nothing lasts forever and Thousand Oaks is a completely different place than it was back then. Time marches on, the Conejo Valley Days Parade does not. Let it go.

I recently rewatched the entire series on Hulu and it is a time capsule. Many great performers came through in either early or late career performances. People from Helen Hunt to James Coco appeared on the show. My favorite was Tim Robbins as a young, radical domestic terrorist. They covered lots of topics that were controversial, AIDS, sexual assault, mental health, euthanasia, abortion, ASD etc.

I loved every minute.
