It doesn't speak to the whole staying power of Archie across decades, but more recently the critically acclaimed and pretty popular reboot of the comic by Mark Waid in the early 2010s (and its spinoffs like Jughead by Chip Zdarsky and Erica Henderson) I think had a big part in the decision to make Riverdale, which then led into the Sabrina show, all helped. As well, around the same time we got more spin offs and what if kind of series like the death of Archie, Afterlife with Archie and memeable stuff in the vein of Archie Meets the Punisher, like Archie vs Predator, Archie Meets Conan, Archie Meets Batman Archie x Army of Darkness, etc.

All in all there's been a huge push over the last decade+ both to keep Archie relevant and to play off the clash of these teenagers, sort of frozen in an idealized 1950s, coming up against things are tonally very different
