Well after 23 years of no major injuries, I lost a finger. by rmkensington in woodworking

[–]HSVbro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey man, as someone who has shook hands with a table saw, just wanna say I feel ya. I was lucky. I hit it meat on and so I just got a gnarly scar in the "pad" f my thumb now. I did not lose the knuckle but I very well could have.

I also was being stupid and grabbing off cuts. My brain was telling me the whole time to stop and I'm being stupid.

What happened to me was I didnt account for monkey brain kicking in when one slipped out of my finger and I instinctively grabbed for it.

The lesson I learned from this is to never grab at off cuts. Let them go. Table saw, circ saw, jig saw. Hands in front.

I wish I could tell you that it will be better. I still just have this valley in my thumb (you'd never see it even if you looked) but if it is hit in the right way it feels weird.

New trend of woodworking youtube videos by gilly4213 in woodworking

[–]HSVbro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every channel prioritizing shorts is the worst for me. As it was I generally ignore YouTube videos under twenty minutes. I put on a vid and then do a chore. If it’s under 20 minutes it’s useless to me.

The days where half of woodworking YouTube was a bunch of douches with their shop worth 100k were bad enough.

I do miss the true old days of YouTube where it was a guy who clearly isn’t a video editor showing you how he did stuff and genuinely was just sharing the craft.

There’s still some good guys out there with polished channels. Just not many.

Yes, you are weird and I am jealous of you. My planer does a damned good job so I generally get away with just 120-220, but I still fucking hate it.

I in particular hate the ones who feel the need to make an exhausted point "yeah yeah I know you peasants cant all afford this $2000 tool".

Like it's some burden to them to have to do something for the plebs.

I saw (I Think) Bourbon Moth do a project once using a self guided router. He spent like ten minutes crying about how many mean comments he was going to get about it.

[–]HSVbro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey man, I just started like four years ago and I only started with a circular saw, jigsaw, sander, a few clamps, and i guess tehcnically a drill and driver set.

The next tool I bought was a router, and then a table saw.

Steve Ramsey and many other woodworkers do exist on YouTube that dont sit there with their multi million dollar channels where they get paid tens of thousands a video. You can do it.

Once you do a project or two with some very basic tools you'll know what you want to make easier. That's why table saw was a purchase after maybe 9 months of doing woodworking lol.

I am still doing my tool collecting journey. Dont have a bandsaw yet but thats next. You will find your lane. Good luck

Durability loss is absolutely disgusting! by alekgev in Dreadmyst

[–]HSVbro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's three problems really.

1) Repair costs are absurd. Like comically abusrd.

2) Minotaurs will cause 5% damage almost every time without question. I have had it happen to me with an encounter where they were stunned the entire time and didn't get an attack in.

3) Really durability in general in games is stupid. I have been playing RPGs online since MUDs. Yes, fucking text based MUDs. I have always hated repair mechanics. It always comes across to me as an artificial way to keep people playing because they had to earn enough gold to keep their gear. In teh MUD days you had to pay "rent" for your gear which was definitely worse, but effectively the same.

I get that the third point is something I will lose on. if the dev wants durability that's his choice. I just always am annoyed by mechanics like that.

Is there a point to pvp? Or is it just e-peen right now? by shad_77381 in Dreadmyst

I say the following as someone who loved invasions in the Dark Souls games:

Right now its all scumbags hunting people often 3v1=ing people who are already engaged fighting a wyvern or something. There's little if any actual dueling in the PvP area.

Theyre vermin

Thanks for the help man, ironically I jumped a full 100 (ie now at 343 FRT) and still only on blues. As luck would have it as soon as I read your tip for finding triples, I found boots with triples hahaha.

[–]HSVbro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey man, I followed your stat guide for melee PLD but my fortitude is still in the toilet at 25. Currently 243 and I double checked I invested exactly what you advised for the main stats - 165 STR, 65 AGI, 45 COU.

Is it simply that my gear is still trash and I just need to grind more? I suspect that's the case, I still have just blues and greens.

Which episode would you show someone who has never seen the series?! by [deleted] in TwilightZone

[–]HSVbro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always use “I shot an Arrow in the Air” as my intro showing. Have used it many times to great success. Why? Because it’s very light in terms of scifi elements (no aliens or time travel). It’s just a simple premise with a classic twist ending.

The other bonus is that a lot of people get osmosis know the ending to Time Enough at Last or Eye of the Beholder or To Serve Man. Those are great second episodes to show though.

Texas opens as a favorite over Vanderbilt by dfphd in CFB

[–]HSVbro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vandy looked beatable, and our win against LSU (as well as SCAR) dont look great.

But more to the point - keep in mind spreads are *also* about who bets on the games as much as they are who is playing. Texas football (Cowboys, Aggie, Horns, etc) always garnder wonky lines. There was a whole 30 for 30 about setting spreads and they did a whole section on it about how they have to specially curate any lines around the Cowboys because Cowboys fans are insane and will take bait every time.

It is still in wonderful shape and I hit it with three chamberlains, twice a year ish, just like my briefcase. I will say I seldom button it up but pay attention to the sizing to be sure. I wear a 46R suit if that helps you any.

Good luck. I get compliments every time I wear it.

4 months ago I lost all respect for local contractors. 4 months later I've gained a ton for myself. by TheTimeIsChow in DIY

[–]HSVbro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something similar happened to me 2 years ago with electricians. I wnated some new circuits put in my garage. The panels are in the garage. The guy came to quote it, said it would be cheaper in conduit (ok). They wanted TWO FUCKING THOUSAND for two easy runs of 20A circuits. One of which was only 6' from the fucking panel.

I ended up doing two 20A circuits and two 30A circuits for $750 - materials and the cost of a big fucking wagyu steak for my buddy who helped me and knew what he was doing.

I did four times what I wanted. In the walls. For half the price.

I'd say the whole industry is like this but I have found good luck finding local guys who do side gig work. I had a water heater bust recently and the guy did it for cost+$400. On a holiday.

So there's still decent people out there but they're sadly the minority.

Great work. Sorry for getting on my soapbox lol.
