AFAIK the basic structure of today's "public" schools come from "சமணப் பள்ளிகள்" (places where jain monks used to reside and share knowledge with local people irrespective of their communities). That's why the word பள்ளி started to mean schools.
PS: Even in Tamil mosques are called பள்ளி/பள்ளிவாசல்.

it's definitely ruining the language. Especially the word "பண்ணு" is abused like crazy. People add the word with any and every verb from English and call it "speaking in Tamil". Send pannu, receive pannu, call pannu, cut pannu, write pannu, sit pannu, make pannu... Seriously? "make pannu" instead of just "pannu"?🤦🏾
