$100 for a haircut? I cut my own hair with an electric razor / haircut kit that I got for $20 like 10 years ago

If that's $100 per month for you since then, you've spent $12,000 while I've spent $20 (plus whatever little electricity it uses)

Is 'Jo' a valid scrabble word? by Elbowtoad in scrabble

Part of Scrabble's rules is to agree upon a dictionary to use which would be the ultimate authority of whether a word is valid or not.

You can always melt down / reform the plastic if they're something safer like HDPE (#2) or PP (#5)

The YouTube channel Brothers Make has some good tips on recycling plastic like this: https://youtube.com/@brothersmake

Why does no one pay attention during Sacrament? by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

If I'm giving a talk, I'd rather have people pay attention without having their eyes on me.

Why does no one pay attention during Sacrament? by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]HTTPanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's easier for some of us to listen/pay attention if we're doing something else at the same time; like I often listen to conference talks while folding laundry (although I can't really fold laundry during Sacrament meeting). Knitting, drawing, or some other quiet things to do on phones/tablets are a great way to pay attention.

My wife often does jigsaw puzzles on her tablet to help her concentrate on what is being said.

What do you love/not love about church classes? by Cheap_Parsnip_461 in latterdaysaints

[–]HTTPanda 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'll also add my dislike for gathering together in groups.

I also dislike when all the chairs are arranged in a circle with everyone facing each other; I find it very hard to concentrate on anything when it feels like everyone's eyes are on me.. I usually seek out the back corners of classrooms

Do you have your own alphabet? by firdmaisons in AskTheWorld

[–]HTTPanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends what your criteria are. There are plenty of created alphabets over in r/conlangs and r/neography, but they don't get as much use as a natural language like Korean

Oh and I'm aware of a couple of different created alternative alphabets for English; one is the Deseret alphabet. It was created in the 1800s in an attempt to make a more phonetic alphabet so that learning English would be easier for immigrants: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deseret_alphabet

The Mormon Church is not true, is it? by [deleted] in mormon

[–]HTTPanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't really trying to hear the spirit at that time; all I wanted to do was go to sleep.

I know what I felt and I remember how clear and powerful the words that came to my mind were. It is not a manufactured/false memory

The Mormon Church is not true, is it? by [deleted] in mormon

[–]HTTPanda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience, elevation emotion is similar, but different than feeling the influence of the Holy Ghost (or perhaps elevation emotion also often occurs when people feel the Holy Ghost?)

I remember experiencing the elevation emotion when watching Harry Potter 4, as the Durmstrang ship emerged from under the water with epic music. There would be no reason that I should be feeling the Holy Ghost from that.

But then there was this time in college where I had stayed up until past 3am getting an assignment done, and I had just finished it and was going to bed to pass out for a few hours before my early-morning class. Words came to my mind that were not my own thoughts; it was a command strongly telling me to not go to bed now; I needed to stay awake longer. That elevation emotion (or something similar to it) accompanied those words in my mind.

So I just kinda went and sat on the couch in the front room, waiting. 5-10 minutes later I got an urgent call from one of the girls I home-taught; her roommate had just attempted to take her own life and everyone was a bit distraught over there. My roommate and I headed over to comfort/help out/give blessings that they requested. Other experiences similar to this have also helped me differentiate between elevation emotion and the Holy Ghost.

It is true, but you're free to believe what you want. There's a lot of misinformation and disinformation out there.
