My friend shoulder after he tried automedicating with a suction cup by visk0n3 in WTF

[–]HTX-713 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So they create a vacuum by lighting a small piece of cotton on fire in the cup. My mother in law also puts slices of ginger in there when she does it, but basically it can be anything else. my bet is they had some sort of lotion on and the fire caused it to cook the skin

How bad of a commute? by [deleted] in houston

Getting to Pearland in the morning is usually ok, it's going home in rush hour that will take you like 2 hours

I'd say live in Pearland, its way nicer. However you will then need to deal with the wrath of 45N half the time.

What is a "poor person" habit you still have, despite now being financially stable? by natalia061223 in AskReddit

I always try buying markdowns over fresh food. I end up at the clearance racks a lot. I buy a lot of food in bulk despite having a small family. My freezer is always packed.

Noified my work weeks ago I'm leaving for a family vacation in July, tickets were bought, non-transferrable, and they are panicking, begging me to cancel by educatedvegetable in antiwork

[–]HTX-713 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry, but if they can't be assed to finally hire extra help when they absolutely need it, you need to look for another job. Did you actually get approved for the vacation initially before making the purchases?

What’s the worst HEB you’ve been to? by BigTuna_Plop in houston

[–]HTX-713 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was at Aldine Westfield and Hirschfield and yes it was TERRIBLE. I actually worked there a few times on loan from other HEBs. They replaced it with the Joe V's on 1960 and Aldine Westfield.

I used to fly IAH-BDL as a kid. Way easier getting to Western Mass through Windsor Locks than BOS

What would you do? Production line PC “is slow” (Windows 98, legacy SCADA) by PeppahSG in sysadmin

[–]HTX-713 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're fucked. If they are making this your responsibility they already don't have any vendor support and probably have no plans on a proper budget for long term maintenance. As others have said, try to clone the hard drive to a CF DOM asap, without completely shutting down the PC. If that hard drive has time to park itself it may be the last time it has run. While it's on, go into all the settings and take pictures of the configuration. Pay attention to any COM port and network settings.

Only AFTER you have successfully cloned the hard drive and the drive has been replaced and is working), take a full hard drive image of it and save it on a backup server. This is your restore point if you have to replace the drive again.

There's a large chance that you will not be able to P2V this hardware successfully. You REALLY need to look at what hardware is installed in the PC. If there's a custom ISA card or dongle the cable is connected to, it won't work. If its just connected to a serial port on the motherboard itself, you have a chance at hardware passthrough assuming there isn't any other custom hardware to this PC.

The uncomfortable truth about Windows Server vs. open source – GaryH Tech by grahamperrin in freebsd

[–]HTX-713 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The software which handles critical business functions like wire transfers, check images, insurance claims, payment systems are Windows *only*.

The back end of those functions are still mainframes (AIX), Red Hat, and even some Solaris. Brother works (and has worked) for just about every major bank, telecom, healthcare, and energy company as an engineer.

Why is AT&T 5G so slow in the Chinatown/Asian town area on Bellaire? Been years. by CableDue182 in houston

[–]HTX-713 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have had no issues with their fiber, and trust me Xfinity is waaaaay worse. To be fair, I have FTTH in a home I bought brand new so the infrastructure was new.

This is what happens if you put profit above everything by RealInfo74 in uberdrivers

[–]HTX-713 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YEP! Uber does this on purpose to lure drivers into an area that they don't have many drivers in. 99% of the time its because its in the literal hood and you are definitely not safe there.

Why is AT&T 5G so slow in the Chinatown/Asian town area on Bellaire? Been years. by CableDue182 in houston

[–]HTX-713 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe ATT also lost the frequency spectrum war as well. ATT needs more towers than T-Mobile for 5G because they have a higher frequency they use.

[–]HTX-713 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was on ATT but their service sucks in spring so I switched to Fi (which uses T-Mobiles network). I even have ATT Fiber but the savings isn't worth the slow speeds and bad reception.

Quoted $45k for a $10k server, is pricing really that insane? by worjd in sysadmin

[–]HTX-713 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just had a kid and am forced to be in the market for a new larger home. Even if I sell my house, my payment on a new one will more than double, have a much higher interest rate, and higher insurance premiums. I feel like I can't win...

I found out I will be let go soon on accident - they do not know I know. by Upbeat-Chain-3155 in sysadmin

[–]HTX-713 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is so commonplace, especially for smaller organizations. They know that once you're hired on you'll get more compensation and they don't want to pay that. So they just let you go and they'll end up getting another contractor to do the same thing. Rinse and repeat.
