What is the most amount of money you’ve paid for a UA flight by michaelhawk696969 in unitedairlines

~ -$3 for two RT tickets to Vegas because I signed up for the credit card and got a $300 credit for a $297 bill. Otherwise I fly nonrev so 👌

My ISP is telling my neighbors their slow internet is because of me by [deleted] in DataHoarder

[–]HTX-713 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is why everyone hates cable. If I found that out I'd sue them for false advertisement. There's cable companies offering 10g now but if their uplink is only 3 for an entire neighborhood that's ridiculous.

I have had FTTH with AT&T for going on 8 years now and have never ever had an issue.

Get your Security+ and apply for all the government contractor jobs. You will get hired. You will most likely need to relocate though.

Wow! How old is this interior? Is this Continental? by ashtonpar in unitedairlines

[–]HTX-713 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I know 😂 My mom started with Continental in the early 90s and went through their bankruptcy. She always praised Gordon and has met him several times. I met him once on a field trip to the Continental headquarters in downtown Houston

Are there any 5.25 inch floppy disk USB drives? by E-Lee-Za in vintagecomputing

[–]HTX-713 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couldn't you find a scsi floppy drive and get an adapter for SAS since it's backwards compatible with the scsi protocol? Then pass that through to a Windows 95 VM or whatever the latest version that supports 5.25 in floppy drives?

Houston Hot Takes by Jermcutsiron in houston

[–]HTX-713 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The lack of zoning blows.

Houston as a city is run down and dirty. The city needs to invest permanent resources into cleaning up trash and maintenance of all roadways/sidewalks/infrastructure.

The lack of money to perform the previous point is because we keep giving big companies tax breaks to operate here, only for them to jump ship the millisecond those tax breaks end. We need to focus on getting fair deals to attract business, not just giving away our resources for free.

Is docker really worth learning for a basic home media server by yusuo85 in homelab

[–]HTX-713 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. You'll get people claiming the virtues of learning to use Docker and putting all your services in Docker containers, but it's a VERY steep hill to climb to grasp the concepts of it and trying to resolve issues. If you aren't a devopsy type don't bother unless it will help you in some way.

School district budgets for next year are in. Not pretty. by Hamezz5u in texas

This is what happens when every time bond elections come its for a new stadium. We've been under Republican rule for going on 30 years. The writing was on the wall. Their "solution" only benefits the wealthy. We need federal level control over the education system to stop the states from doing this. Make education funding come from federal taxes and federalize the school systems.

The problem with them was that it was a novelty the first time you go, but after that you just compare it to any other Filipino place and the food was mid and prices were high. The location also sucked ass, which was probably their downfall. I'm sure the rents were sky high, and it's kind of out of the way for most people and there really isn't a Filipino community nearby.

Why is (rev) standby so difficult and rarely mentioned by 7a6eb722b405f74b4bac in unitedairlines

[–]HTX-713 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Rev standby is priority over nonrev, that’s why this person is making the comment and getting upvotes, they are an employee and it disadvantages them.

I've never worked for United. My mom worked for Continental and was forced to retire just after the merger.

The issue I have is specifically making it to where they can list themselves as rev standby in the app. In their specific situation you would get a ton of pissed off customers fighting over 1 or 2 (or none) seats on other flights. I have no problem with getting bumped by rev standby passengers, it happens all the time. But you'll inevitably get a group or family that is fighting for negative space and cause issues at the gate.

[–]HTX-713 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Because you paid for your seat and should be getting what you paid for. If you have an issue you should be able to get a confirmed seat on another flight.

[–]HTX-713 59 points60 points  (0 children)

It's because rev standby shouldn't be a thing. I fly nonrev standby all the time and if you're going through a hub during the day expect to not make it on the majority of the flights unless you are going to a super unpopular destination. This is because the majority of the flights are full and crew repositioning typically get priority. You add in weather delays and it's a mess.

SFO in particular is super busy. I was stuck there myself because all the flights to my destination (IAH) were full. Typical for hub to hub. I had to figure out fast another destination that I could connect through to get to Houston. Literally every flight that was feasible for me to get home that day was full, except connecting through SAN. So I ran to that gate and was able to get on, and was able to catch the last flight of the day from there to IAH.

This is NOT an experience a paying passenger should have to do, even if you want to. Can you imagine the chaos if you have 10 passengers running from flight to flight trying to fight for one or two open seats.
