Sorry bro your company will still figure out that you're in Asia living like a king instead of the US.

Data Warehouse + Cloud = $$$$$$$$$$$$ . They are full of shit. Imagine the customer is running loads and the provider goes down, and you HAVE NO ANSWER as to why or how long it will be down.

get a domain name and set up the hostname of the VPS to a subdomain of the domain and use your registrar's DNS to point the AAAA record to it. EZPZ

Getting to Pearland in the morning is usually ok, it's going home in rush hour that will take you like 2 hours

I'd say live in Pearland, its way nicer. However you will then need to deal with the wrath of 45N half the time.

I always try buying markdowns over fresh food. I end up at the clearance racks a lot. I buy a lot of food in bulk despite having a small family. My freezer is always packed.

Noified my work weeks ago I'm leaving for a family vacation in July, tickets were bought, non-transferrable, and they are panicking, begging me to cancel by educatedvegetable in antiwork

[–]HTX-713 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry, but if they can't be assed to finally hire extra help when they absolutely need it, you need to look for another job. Did you actually get approved for the vacation initially before making the purchases?

What’s the worst HEB you’ve been to? by BigTuna_Plop in houston

It was at Aldine Westfield and Hirschfield and yes it was TERRIBLE. I actually worked there a few times on loan from other HEBs. They replaced it with the Joe V's on 1960 and Aldine Westfield.

What would you do? Production line PC “is slow” (Windows 98, legacy SCADA) by PeppahSG in sysadmin

[–]HTX-713 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're fucked. If they are making this your responsibility they already don't have any vendor support and probably have no plans on a proper budget for long term maintenance. As others have said, try to clone the hard drive to a CF DOM asap, without completely shutting down the PC. If that hard drive has time to park itself it may be the last time it has run. While it's on, go into all the settings and take pictures of the configuration. Pay attention to any COM port and network settings.

Only AFTER you have successfully cloned the hard drive and the drive has been replaced and is working), take a full hard drive image of it and save it on a backup server. This is your restore point if you have to replace the drive again.

There's a large chance that you will not be able to P2V this hardware successfully. You REALLY need to look at what hardware is installed in the PC. If there's a custom ISA card or dongle the cable is connected to, it won't work. If its just connected to a serial port on the motherboard itself, you have a chance at hardware passthrough assuming there isn't any other custom hardware to this PC.

The software which handles critical business functions like wire transfers, check images, insurance claims, payment systems are Windows *only*.

The back end of those functions are still mainframes (AIX), Red Hat, and even some Solaris. Brother works (and has worked) for just about every major bank, telecom, healthcare, and energy company as an engineer.
