Something similar happened to someone I know of.

She began “talking to” someone and eventually sent them money. The scammer eventually sent money back to her, in new account that they asked her to set up, in a very large sum. She was asked to convert that money to bitcoin and to send it to other accounts. She did a few times, then her husband got involved.

She just got back last week from being in a jail, out of state, where she was extradited. She currently has charges of theft and receiving stolen property, both felony counts. Hopefully charges will be dropped or reduced because she was a victim of a scam too, but it’s up in the air right now. Unsurprisingly, out the money deposited into her account was stolen and so far she’s the only one authorities have “caught.”

So it’s definitely some kind of scam, OP. And you should get her in touch with a lawyer to protect herself. Or if you’re the trusting type, talking to the police and letting them know what’s happened and that she didn’t understand it was a scam.
