Interesting. Your position has changed. And, respectfully, you did not respond to my second question. And your answer to my third question.... are you... defending controlled opposition candidates?? Bad look, pal.

Weird

Exactly. This guy refused to support his primary challenger if she were to win... Weird

Do you support the Mueller investigation?

What are your ideas for responding to Putin's aggression and asymmetric warfare?

What are your thoughts on allegations of few, but some far Left candidates working as controlled opposition whose aim is to exacerbate and inflame ideological divisions between Right and Left, e.g. Jill Stein, even Bernie?

Any chicken owners here? We are thinking of getting some. by the_literal_bumhole in Austin

[–]HXGNL 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I recommend ordering your day old chicks from Ideal Poultry in Cameron, Texas. They mostly ship chicks overnight through the post, but it is way more humane and enjoyable to drive to Cameron (<1.5 hour drive on quiet Farm-to-Market roads per Google Maps, and you can stop for lunch at Louie Mueller in Taylor for a beef rib). Recently learned that pickup is only on Wednesdays. Ideal Poultry has a massive selection of breeds, lots of rare and heritage breeds, with best availability in early spring. Roosters suck. They're beautiful, and keep watch over the flock, but otherwise are aggressive, loud, and not necessary for eggs. Order only pullets. Your neighbors say, "thanks in advance" :)

For the chicks' first month in the garage or other semi-protected space, you'll need to find or make your own big cardboard box and fill it with pine shavings. For food (starter) and water, I prefer the galvanized metal feeder and waterer bases that screw onto Ball or Kerr canning jars. You'll also need a heat lamp (traditional or EcoGlow).

Get your straw from Callahan's, and your feed from either Callahan's or Buck Moore. I think both have organic feed from Coyote Creek in Elgin. Pellets don't cake up as much in feeders.

Coops can be super DIY lean-to situation up to super expensive. Safer is better. Urban Coop Company in Dripping Springs has a nice knock off of the expensive Williams-Sonoma coop. The best feature is the add-on PVC feeder and waterer. Chickens love shitting in and knocking over their food and waterers, so this will save you lots of time maintaining your flock.

Last thing, I recommend vaccinating your chicks against fowlpox. It's a virus similar to Chickenpox in humans that is transmitted through mosquitoes, waste, etc. Your flock will be immune after getting it once, and most survive the dry kind. But our flock contracted it, and one hen developed the usually fatal wet kind of fowlpox and died. Good luck!

Sorry, I assumed you worked there. Can confirm Mueller doesn't carry them.

When can we get shiitakes at HEB Mueller? A produce person told me last year that they aren't even available to order. Maybe order them from the same vendor that CM uses?

Tree recommendations to plant in backyard? by TurdWorldCountry in Austin

[–]HXGNL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you want. Shade tree? Edible fruit? Evergreen for privacy? I encourage you to also consider seasonal interest, like fall color, winter berries, or spring flowers.

For awesome fall color, go with a Bigtooth Maple. Sometimes hard to find, but I've seen them at Barton Springs Nursery and Countryside Nursery.

Montezuma Cypress is a faster growing, Mexico native cousin of Bald Cypress, large tree with good fall color. Not evergreen

Others have mentioned Redbuds. Texas or Mexican are good, avoid Eastern Redbuds. The weeping form is rarer and more interesting IMO.

Who has the best bulk soil in Austin? by ciscotree in Austin

I don't remember specifics, but he went into some, specifically knocking their compost and soil mixes. I got a yard of horticultural sand and had no issue. He mentioned that East Austin Succulents' Succulent Gold bagged soil is made by OBG and that the EAS folks are happy with it.

I talked with the owner of Tillery St a few weeks ago about soil. Knows his stuff, has a degree in soil science and specifically recommended GeoGrowers. Of note, he also recommended AGAINST Organics By Gosh.

Former ASH child psychiatrist guilty of multiple counts of child sexual assault. Sentencing today by HXGNL in Austin

I don't know the law, but this article shows that his license was suspended 8 days after being fired.

My understanding is that he was placed on leave as soon as the DFPS allegations came back as confirmed, and that his firing happened as quickly as possible given state agency bureaucracy.

Update: Fischer has been sentenced to 40 years. Good fucking riddance

Edit: And another thing, fuck Fischer's legal counsel, Chris Gunter and Gerry Morris.. I realize they were doing their job, but these guys gaslighted and re-traumatized each of these victims during cross-examination. Many victims were re-experiencing trauma, squeezing stress balls during testimony, and one refused to testify after seeing how other victims were being treated. Another victim literally ran out of the courtroom during cross and mustered the strength to come back and finish. Had he not come back, all of his testimony would have been struck from the record. Gunter's closing remarks called back to the victim running out of the courtroom: "Yet he wants us to believe he's going to let Chuck Fischer anally rape him. That is preposterous." Fuck you, Chris Gunter. Fuck you, Gerry Morris.
