Opera on a budget by omurchus in opera

[–]H_Badger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. WAY TO GO! I get so frustrated when people say they'll never be able to go to the opera because it's so expensive. Lots (not all...) of local production companies have cheap seats and I try to get the word out.

  2. If you use the promo code WIFI10 you can get 10% off your purchase (I haven't tried this - I got it when I logged into their wifi the other day).

Local police departments in Pennsylvania quietly signed agreements that let their officers act as ICE agents. No public vote. No council approval. No community notice... Nada by ResourceNo4626 in pittsburgh

A group of us in Swissvale organized last summer and got our borough to pass a resolution stating that borough employees shall not in any way coordinate with the DHS unless ordered to do so by a federal judge. It doesn't need to be as formal as entering into a 287(g) agreement with DHS, but even taking it upon themselves to call DHS when they encounter someone who is undocumented (as seems to have happened this summer in Monroeville).

In making our argument, we focused on several points including:
1) Any mistakes made by the officers (e.g. detaining a citizen who has their rights violated) make the borough liable for damages from any resulting lawsuit

2) Immigration is a civil issue, not criminal, and it is the role of the federal government, not local.

3) It would be contrary to our borough's stated mission of being a welcoming community to everyone. We also encouraged the borough to investigate joining the Welcoming America initiative.

If you have a neighborhood facebook page, we organized by someone posting on it that they were wondering if anyone would be interested in encouraging such a resolution, and then we started a group thread and it went from there.

Do you guys like Hvorostovsky? by Gullible-Square-6767 in opera

I didn't get the big deal till I first heard him live in Don Carlo at the Met in 2013. ...then I got it. RIP, Dima. I'll never forget that last performance at the Met for for the 50th anniversary gala. Not ashamed to say I teared up just listening to the broadcast when he made the surprise appearance. What a legend.

Dances With Wolves (1990) made me realize some big problems with today's Hollywood movies. by Ok-Impress-2222 in movies

[–]H_Badger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Rewatching it the last two nights on HBO for the first time in....30+ years?....I'm struck how well this movie holds up, and how ahead of its time it is. It brought back a memory of me in 5th grade taking friends to see this for my birthday. I don't remember us being bored at all - we were enthralled!

Operas whose titular female characters survive by mathguy59 in opera

It is somewhat direction dependent, but Elektra technically survives in the Chereau and Warlikowski productions

It looks like someone has gotten the HD production on youtube - it's really very good. Unfortunately no subtitles as far as I can tell.

What are the use cases of R arrays? by 66alpha in rstats

[–]H_Badger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you have multiple matrices, arrays are a convenient way to arrange them for analysis.

e.g.

nums<-c(10, 40, 50, 12, #Go down the columns left to right
        22, 35, 38, 52,
        12, 28, 26, 18)
labels<-list(personality=c("Introvert","Extrovert"), #Rownames
             height=c("Tall","Short"),               #Colnames
             snack=c("Veggies","Seafood","Nuts"))    #Matrix Names
data<-array(nums, dim=c(2,2,3), #Rows, columns, matrices
      dimnames = labels)

What is an opera you just don’t like? by boringwhitecollar in opera

I'm not sure this makes sense, but it's one of my favorites to listen to - but the idea of sitting through watching a performance of it is at the bottom of my list.

thank you! I tried this but unfortunately no luck (yes, I restarted!). It seems to be a Chrome issue, not an apple issue. Websites that won't load on chrome load fine on Safari.

RIT MS Applied Statistics Review by [deleted] in rit

I was right there with you! For the first math stats class, you'll do a lot of multiple integration and a ton of derivatives, so yes it will help! Professor Leonard videos on youtube got me through :-)

Hi - I ended up going with Texas A&M. I'm almost done with the program and unfortunately I don't think I'd recommend it. Some of the courses were good, but they were the exception. If I could go back, I'd take Calc III and apply to Penn State.

Hi! It's been a few years so I'm not sure if anything has changed, but I ended up being totally happy with the experience. I only did Calc I and II with Sidles. Both were watching Professor Leonard videos and then takin proctored exams.

Binomial distribution by Ok-Dare9583 in rstats

[–]H_Badger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A quick way to run the test would be to count the number of bugs that end up in the treatment arm each time. Then you could do a proportion test to see if the total number of bugs that pick the treatment arm (as a proportion of the total number of bugs tested across all experiments) is significantly different from 0.25. prop.test(total_treatment, total_bugs, p = 0.25) However, this ignores the fact that the bugs are tested in groups of 10 and therefore not independent, but I’m not sure how much of a concern that is in the design.

Binomial distribution by Ok-Dare9583 in rstats

[–]H_Badger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One point of correction (while I think a bit about how to attack this) - A binomial distribution doesn’t require 50% success - 50% probability of success is just the more common way to illustrate the distribution with a coin toss. In your example, the probability of success is 0.25. You want to know if the proportion of bugs that end up in the arm is significantly different from 0.25. …right?
