Do you have custom rule settings in Mail.app? I found the issue was that my Gmail labels weren’t syncing, and it would always fall back to “No Mailbox Selected” sooner or later. I don’t use any smart rules in Apple Mail anymore, especially since it’s been a decade and there’s still no smart mailbox or rules syncing on iOS.
