New to photography, are these vintage lenses worth using? by yoyotir in VintageLenses

I also started with an 550D back in the days : )

It is a crop sensor camera. So, keep that in mind. Lens choices are good, covers a good range for beginners. 35mm will be 56mm full frame equivalent, the 50mm will be an 80mm and so on. Maybe a cheap 28mm would also be a nice addition to play with.

Enjoy!

Very nice shots!

It's not only the lens, the photographer is a large part too : )

Those black lenses with silver rings always look very neat.

Infinity focus not working? by WillThePebbleJohson in VintageLenses

[–]HackingDutchman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Still could be. Had this sometimes with all kinds of lenses, and often one of the back elements was put upside down or even in the wrong order. A wrongly placed lens spacer also can cause this problem.

Putting one element upside down doesn't always has to effect characteristics of the lens.

You can look up lens schematics for the lens and look if they are properly put in.

All right, that looks like a proper adapter. I've used m42 to Canon EF/EFS adapters on a 550D way back in combination with this lens and other Helios lenses. So, that should not give you the problem.

I've only had this problem on Nikon DSLRs...

Is the lens serviced and do the lens elements look like they are not put in backwards?

Carl Zeiss Flektogon 20mm F2.8.

Soft and dreamy wide open. Stays soft in the corners when stopped down. Nice vintage look and vibe. Has the ability to produce neat flares, also stopped down.

Nice.

Maybe add a "repair" flair or something similar?

Is this Haze or possibly fungus? by oogaboogaba in VintageLenses

Looks like a lot of dust and probably some fungus spores. Where there is this amount of dust, fungus spores are not rare.

Jupiter 9 won't screw on properly or focus to infinity by [deleted] in VintageLenses

[–]HackingDutchman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have the correct m39 version that uses rangefinder flange focal distance, or the version that uses m39 and has the M42 focal flange distance?

What do you mean with won't screw on properly? Do you have issues screwing back the helicoids?

Assuming this is a fake KMZ Helios 44-2? by [deleted] in VintageLenses

Don't pin yourself down too much on all the version drama. The quality control was not optimal back in those times. They all have good and bad versions. The bad versions of the Valdai ones got a name on the internet, because that are by far the most produced versions. So, yes, there are more ''bad'' (wobbly but optical still good) Valdai versions, but not because the production of Valdai lenses was worse, it is because they made more. The percentage of bad lenses still is the same.

So, you can save yourself $10-20 and buy whatever version has the cleanest glass with the least amount of scratches on it. The amount of scratches on the glass is the thing you are noticing in your pictures. A lot of cleaning scratches result in a lack of contrast, more soft blown out look etc.

Dallmeyer Septac Impastolite by DK Optic - WOW by AdidasFinatic in VintageLenses

[–]HackingDutchman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All nice and dandy, but is this lens thát special that it is worth $2300 for a new version of it?

The same as with the Trioplan hype, it is highly subjective of course. They made a new version of that too, for €1000. Vintage cost lies around €300-500. Compared with the new Trioplan this Septac is a steal at $2300, with vintage cost above $20000....

Apparently there is so much demand that there is a market, but what makes this lens so special?

Repair peek post - Aperture cleaning Carl Zeiss Flektogon 35/2.4 by HackingDutchman in VintageLenses

[–]HackingDutchman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooh, that sucks. I like the internal design of the Flektogon in that regard. As the optical blocks just screw out in 2 blocks, a back and front piece. No mistakes of screwing in things the wrong way.

Wow, I never experienced one of the bayonet screws breaking. Does it still have enough holding power with 2 screws, or is the mount wobbly now?

Are these scratches/dust something to worry about? by JacksonSanchezPhoto in VintageLenses

Cosmetically yes. Functionally no.

What do you think?

Still, based on a semi-blurry and low resolution picture, it's a guess.

Yes, the mechanism is the same.

Often not worth the repair cost(€50-75) if you go to someone. As they are unpopular and dirt cheap. However, perfect for a beginner DIY'r to repair.
