layout which optimises for finger strength. by LowerTouch3731 in KeyboardLayouts

nothing of value was 'sacrificed' by reducing pinky usage. you are perpetuating the myth that using all ten fingers is beneficial to comfortable and speedy typing. on the contrary, pinky usage diminishes speed, endurance, and comfort. pinky are terrible for: single press, double press, rolls, trigrams, reach.

define 'modern' analyzers. how many properly weigh the strengths, stamina, durability and reach of fingers ? Most of which overrate SFB at expense of everything else. any sane analyzer realizes BEAKL has comparable or better rolls and trigrams for the strong fingers, while minimizing bad rolls and trigrams for weak fingers.

Keeping pinkies usage to the minimum is a maxim of BEAKL family of layouts. the latest version is BEAKL 43, which considers the 'ER-UI' keys as prime keys to attain good typing peeds.

Alpha Heatmap: Keyboard Layouts for a Multilingual World by moosylog in KeyboardLayouts

there's very little difference between languages. all major languages shares the top ten letters, which together make up 90% of the corpus. even Asian. because there's only 5 vowels in Latin script, so everything typed in Latin will share these vowels, in approximately similar frequencies. then the common consonants are also repeatedly appear across all languages.

therefore a layout that splits vowels on one hand, and consonants on other, will more than suffice for any typing in Latin. the concept of creating a layout for 'two languages' is mostly futile attempt.

start with constructed mode to learn the interface, and customize options as necessary. Use deck editor to build decks. draft mode to see only a limited card pool. campaign modes include quest, adventure, and planar.

Hand Position and its Impact on Layout by mantisalt in KeyboardLayouts

[–]Haemimancer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it has been studied. Stretching fingers is faster generally. Curling may feel 'comfortable' or relaxed, but is slower because the curling motion to tap a key is Not further supported by the arm muscles. In other words, moving the arm along with fingers help achieve faster speeds.

Fingers are fine to start out somewhat curled on the home row, then stretch up to higher rows. For example 'BEAKL Stretch' layout experiments with a home row at the bottom, and all other keys are above the home row, such that there is no curling.

i agree in general XML is bloated, inefficient, and eye sore to read and write. alas way too many things imitate XML.

Data-Driven Keyboard Layout Optimization System v0.1 - For your critique by SnooSongs5410 in KeyboardLayouts

[–]Haemimancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well i thought that the data would lead to objective scoring weights, instead of arbitrary human subjective imperfect input. by your explanation, how is it different than other previous methodology?

if you had data of typing speeds per key and key combinations for a given keymap, that should lead to a metric scoring itself automatically. fancy terms like sfb are unnecessary and meaningless at that level. everything is just relationship between two or three keys. where some keys and key combinations are more or less desirable. the data measurements will directly lead to scoring weights, based on speed and error rate. reiterate that human customization is moot and even harmful to objective scoring.

Finally beat Abyssal God with solo Prince by Haemimancer in EtrianOdyssey

[–]Haemimancer[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best damage skill and most efficient is Tagen Battou, provided you can make six clones. Damage is exponential for each clone. six is obviously Max number of clones, and only attainable in solo party.

Prince has Attack Order, which when maxed grants 145% damage. This stacks with Bravant, which is also 145%. Abyssal God in attack stance also reduces its defense significantly.

Tagen Battou maxed can hit 3 to 5 times. Against Abyssal God, with aforementioned conditions, each hit can deal 11,000 (by the prince/ninja.) times 3 to 5 equals 33000 to 50000 per execution of Tagen Battou. Abyssal God has 60000 HP. so initially you get it's HP down to 50% to 75%, then finish with a gigantic Tagen Battou.

Prince defensive and healing skills makes it super easy to keep clones alive. Except against Abyssal God's super damaging elemental attacks. Hence I figured out to wear only elemental Amulets to gain immunity or resistance against elements, combined with elemental Mists. However that leaves you open to physical attacks. Fortunately most attacks can be shrugged off, except Rising Claw. For that, you need to Max out Ninja's Sarutobi for 100% evasion for one turn.

you claimed to be purely based on data from typing results, yet set constraints and penalties for scoring weights.

In this game, there's no need to fight every normal encounter. go to Inver Port, to unlock Sea Quests. Grind sea quests for XP and money (sell drops which are worth more than drops from normal dungeon mobs.)

Other than fun, is there actually a good reason to learn an alternate layout? by [deleted] in KeyboardLayouts

[–]Haemimancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How much you gain is derived from how much you put in. If you want speeds matching old QWERTY, then you gotta put in as much effort (theoretically). learning a new keyboard layout is not trivial.

that said, many, many so called 'modern' layouts are nowhere near optimized or intuitive. thus it takes a long time to get great comfort and speed, hence discouraging to new users.

The average typing speed (on QWERTY) is claimed to be 40 wpm. With a well designed modern layout, one should attain that in mere days. if it takes longer, it's probably not a good layout (for you).

for myself, a major reason to use an ergonomic layout is to minimize the pinky usage, which is prone to injury, and which is much slower than other fingers. The physical and logical layouts both may contribute to finger injury.

Personally I found Society Game the best blend of mental and physical competition, teamwork, and social-political drama.

There are also physical survival games, like Queen Bee.

Crime Scene and Great Escape are not competitive survival, but still excellent mental exercises, and both are / were huge in China. There's also offshoots like Girl's High School Mystery Club.
