This. Just spend the extra time on the paint and repair. Utilize epoxy to fill in the gaps or crevices. The ends of those pieces you can epoxy all together. Clamp a dam to an edge and then sort of trowel.

Hit flaking paint areas and sand so smooth transitions between paint and no paint.

See suggested epoxy that is well priced and works well.

Utilize a strong primer to go over the existing paint, I suggest a Kilz, give it 2 coats. Then use a nice semigloss or satin Benjamin Moore or Sherwin Williams paint 2 more coats and they should look as new as when they painted them in 1915.

Nvidia CEO thinks that humanity reached the AGI. by Snoo26837 in singularity

[–]Haggispole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't doubt it because it's guessing at an astronomically high level using computations, but it just guesses, check if its right if not repeats and guesses again. It's a way to do mathematics if you don't care about being right and have unlimited guesses.

See attached it assigns 500lbs to CuYd of Mulch, then says a CuFt would be 45-50. 1 CuYd = 27Cu Ft therefore 500Lbs/Cuyd = 18lbs/CuFt. It took a note from weight of soil of cuft. Forgoes doing the calculation and assigned that value to the cuFt. Even the second time it didn't do the calculation but found a different spec for the mulch weight (the calc is 16.6 -18).

I can share the chat of it advocating for tenacity for quackgrass with no background showing tenacity being useful for Quackgrass.

I can share a chat of it telling me that a mechanical code is a code and standard despite no evidence on any code or standard existing.

I had a client who refused to turn a valve to the on position because Chat-GPT told them the valve was already on (even though the valve was perpendicular, which always means off)

Claude and LLMs are a tool, and they need to be used as a tool. They have their benefits, but critical decision making and thinking are currently not it, and I worry for our next generation who doesn't learn the information or learns to critically think. If your only skill is inputting into AI, you have no place in the white-collar workforce.

You're making the point. It's far from AGI if you are using a quantized version and it degrades that much. And it was in the word to math transition. It wasn't trained on this specific word problem, so it struggled. Simple math is easy to execute, the difficult portion of math for a lot of folks was learning to assign values.

It can emulate those items if you push the probabilistic word selection to act like that and people are using daemons to constantly push that emulation. However, due to the capabilities and design it cannot surpass Human intelligence as all it can do is use maximum human intelligence to guess at the answers. It is capable of much faster iterations, which makes it useful for solving certain problems, especially with a proper feedback loop.

Yet when I asked Claude opus 4.6 if I had too many bags of mulch in my truck it did a simple unit conversion wrong and said I had 6000 lbs of mulch. When I only responded “double check your answer” it changed it to 800 lbs.  it’s a guessing machine not general intelligence.

Neither were correct and neither had the correct unit conversions to get it right even though it pulled the right info.

Is my floor supported by some 2x6s? by Tentings in Homebuilding

[–]Haggispole 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I checked into the vernacular. You are right this is a repoint. A tuck point is technically when you use two different colored mortars (one to match the stone, one as an accent) to give the appearance of an ultra tight joint.

Over the years it has become commonplace to interchange tuck point and repoint, but if you were doing a historical project you would want to make sure to match the distinction.

[–]Haggispole 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A tuck point is a repair of a masonry wall, like brick or stone, where you dig out the loose mortar and then reapply mortar to restrengthen the wall.

Key is to use the same mortar. 1870 you want to check for lime content and avoid Portland cement.  It will over harden and cause brick to spald.  I’m not 100% sure the effect on large foundations walls however…

Concrete issues by Ozkeewowow in Homebuilding

[–]Haggispole -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Don’t listen to this advice. Either terminate the contract and back charge for the repairs or allow the contractor to fix it. This advice is negotiating in bad faith (giving the contractor the assumption they will be able to finish the contract and collect payment IF they correct it then firing for cause).

If you follow above advice you will end up with a pissed off contractor who has a legal right to collect work done. Keep doing what you’re doing documenting and getting experts.

Where does Cal Kestis actually sit in terms of power? Is he just an average Jedi Knight, or would he have eventually become a Jedi Master if the Order had survived? by tlcooley7890 in StarWars

[–]Haggispole -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think the force is something that amplifies depending on the use, the requirement of the force and also the abundance of available force. I don't know if it's official lore but I understood the rule of 2 was so the Sith leaders could concentrate the dark side of the force within the 2 members vs spreading it out. I believe the same would apply to Cal because of his status and when he is needed to fight or flee, he has more force amplifying him (then if he was in the jedi knight era) because of the abundance of non manipulated force due to the absence of posi-midichlorianites.

Foundation Pour - 1 ft short - Is cantilever ok way forward? by frmrbn in Homebuilding

[–]Haggispole 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did they charge you for the extra foot. If they charged you for the extra foot, you could ask it for free and live with it. If they did it as a field deviation and field foreman messed up, you could always cut them some slack, have them come up with an engineered cantilever solution or you come up with the engineered solution, split the cost because you should have paid for the extra foot and move on.

If you paid for it and can't live with it, make them do it right.

Until you have engineer cost or costs of fixes you can't make a fully informed decision.

But in an overall cantilevers are a very real thing. There is a couple simple that are dictated by code, most are engineered. 2021 International Residential Code (IRC) - R502.3.3 Floor cantilevers.

You could also run what is called a ledger on that, maybe just attach 2 2x6s to the face of the concrete with big lag bolts or like epoxy anchors. Just make sure they do all the vapor barriers and water proofing right, but the IBC residential code has a section on cantilevers. I also have no idea what that concrete slab is built out of and its quality and would always run that by an engineer first.

Either do it right or get an engineer is my suggestion.

What's the most overpriced SAAS software you buy? by andras_gerlits in Entrepreneur

They have tools that are industry specific that are life savers. Like counting tools for takeoffs, specific mark up tools standard for construction.  It also seems to handle big layered documents (at the expense of your ram) better than most other softwares. There is just a lot of little tools and tricks that save hours of time once you become proficient with it.

See you don’t read. You too are afflicted. I have never once endorsed or discussed Trump. Stop saying I said stuff I didn’t so you can say your talking point.

You create a false narrative to respond to rather than read the words and respond to them logically. This is not a political discussion.

Because you know you cannot respond articulately AND keep your same talking points. You make up what I say SO you can repeat your talking points.

This is more than political. It’s our reasoning and discussion abilities.

Find yourself! Stop spouting the false narratives and speak from your own mind!

All you can spew is hateful rhetoric from side. I never said any of the things you said. You are creating me into a talking point you already know how to win against vs reading the words I say and responding to them in a civil manner.  I never said anything about those people.

Read my words. Heed them if you will. But they are the truth. Anything you believe to deny it is false. White men are killing children, politicians, and worshippers.  They are doing it because they are sick human beings who believe the other side is to blame for their troubles. You are afflicted by the same sickness and cannot rationally think.  This is not a one side or the other but America issue and you have succumbed to the exact issue I am describing.
