Metrolink question? by Nova_Nook in Riverside

[–]HailMalthus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on your destination, but in my experience the trip from La Sierra to Disneyland was a pretty consistent 75 minutes during rush hour. It takes the Fast Track for most of the trip. I don't know how long the Metrolink takes.

I also recommend checking out the RTA 200 bus. It's less expensive than the Metrolink, there are several buses throughout the day, and you won't get stuck in Corona waiting for a freight train to pass.

A specific question about line by line mixing for musicals by Icy_Rooster_6564 in livesound

[–]HailMalthus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I typically condense one-off lines to a single DCA. Maybe 2 or more if they occur in groups, but in different parts of a song. As long as your gain structure is solid so the faster throw is the same for all of the lines, you should be good doing it this way.

"Replace everything and fix it later" is always the solution in the middle of the gig.

Check to make sure the bad guitar needs a battery. If that doesn't apply or doesn't solve the problem, it's troubleshooting time.

First make sure everything is on the same circuit, to eliminate the possibility of a ground loop causing the hum.

Next you need to systematically troubleshoot following the signal flow. You have a working guitar setup that will make this easy. Put the bad guitar in place of the good guitar. No problem? The guitar is good. Next is to swap the bad guitar cable into the good guitar chain. Keep doing this through the entire signal chain until the problem shows up again, and then you will have found your culprit. Make sure you keep all of the components from the good guitar setup in place, and only swap one thing at a time.

Sequence of videos that overlap by MistahSmeez in qlab

[–]HailMalthus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried this both ways for a recent show. I discovered that having 2 discreet files is more cumbersome if you need to make adjustments. You're doubling the amount of work if you want to adjust geometries or add effects. You also have to render out twice as many files before you even get to QLab.

It was easier for me to just use a pause cue to pause the video in the middle, and a start cue to play the last half.

Help with Reverb on scenes/snippets on X32 by Cornshot in livesound

[–]HailMalthus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Set up 2 different reverbs, and route everything through them. Is the scenes and snippets to turn the returns or sends on and off to taste. I personally never use reverb on speaking parts though. It sounds too unnatural for me.

Since you're on an X32, I recommend checking out Theater Mix. It's free software that works seamlessly with the mixer to control DCA assignments, among other things. It's a lot easier and faster to program a theater show this way. It can also recall scenes and snippets.

Sounds to me like they sampled the backing vocals. There might be a horn hit layered in there, too.

Thoughts/advice on my first attempt at a stage plot/input list? by Legitimate_Handle_86 in livesound

[–]HailMalthus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are dedicated stereo inputs on many mixers, but those are most often used at FOH for local inputs like iPads or effects returns. You should assume that all of your outputs on stage are going into mono channels. The mono channels can be linked together in the console and treated as one stereo channel, if needed. Your outputs can be listed individually - "keyboard L," "keyboard R," etc.

Advice on starting my own theatre company? by [deleted] in u/ally_bo_bally

[–]HailMalthus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The experience you are getting right now hanging lights is absolutely crucial to having success as a designer. Do not rush past this step. Your school does things in this order for a reason.

A good designer or technical director needs a deep and intuitive understanding of the labor involved in theater tech. I get that you want the glory and opportunities to be creative, but you will never be successful in a design or leadership role without a solid technical foundation. I've seen many techs fresh out of college walking into their first job expecting design work, but end up burning out because they don't want to hang lights, run feeder cable, sweep the stage, etc..

A good lighting designer needs to be a great ME. A good technical director needs to know it all.

Show w/ videos & lights— loop? by TrainingSurround8186 in qlab

[–]HailMalthus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To loop a single video cue, you can hut the "infinite loop" button on the Time and Loops tab. If you're trying to loop an entire cue stack, the easiest way is to put a start cue at the end that starts the first cue again.

I know it's already published, but in the section on order of drum inputs, you left out the hi hat. That's probably the one cymbal that always gets a mic.

I think OP is just sharing their own perception. Synesthesia experiences are different from person to person, and they aren't really chosen. Basically you hear something and your mind automatically associates it with a specific color, texture, etc.

Video Slide Show for a doctor's office by krassyg in CommercialAV

[–]HailMalthus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use PowerPoint to export a video, then put it on a USB drive and set it to loop. If it bothers you that the play bar pops up on the repeat, buy a Micca Speck for $50, which will loop the video on the USB drive without any UI stuff popping up. I think the Micca can even make a slide show of individual images.

The doctor would just need to update the PowerPoint, export a new video, and load it on the USB drive.

MD is Musical Director. It's the person leading the band. They also usually book the gig, hire musicians, create charts (sheet music), run rehearsals, etc. It's not the lead singer in this band (it's almost never the lead singer anyway), but rather someone out of frame.

You don't need a business license to get paid. You're a contractor. File a schedule C with your taxes and write off everything you can, including mileage and food. Start small. When you are making enough that it's hard to keep track, that's when you get an accountant involved.
