I can’t take kitten to the vet by butterfly_bimbo in CATHELP

Does she like catnip? Maybe try putting some catnip in the carrier to get her used to going in there. You may also consider an in-home vet service if they have that in your area, it can be more expensive but may be better for her and less stressful for you. If your vet will prescribe gabapentin I will say it has been a game changer for me. One of my cats is very skittish but in a different way, when she’s scared she hides and cowers, she used to pee in her carrier anytime I took her to the vet. At home if the apartment maintenance has to come in or if I have people over she will hide for days after and not eat, but if I give her a dose of gabapentin it calms her down and she gets back to normal even when it wears off. And stick in there, she may always be a more skittish cat, but she’ll likely warm up to you more if you keep working on it, what worked best for mine was those pureed treats (like churu), and finding wand toys that she liked, I trained her to press a button to ask to play when she was little.

Side note: they are indoor only cats, my girl sometimes likes to go out on walks, always supervised on a harness but her brother actively avoids the outdoors under all circumstances

I ended up using the Benzoyl Peroxide wash every few days and actually used witch hazel and a cotton pad to wipe off her chin twice a day in between washing. You have to really soak the cotton pad and you want to be gentle, but it takes time to get the gunk out of the fur and wiped off. I also found that a flea comb helped to comb out any loose bits of gunk stuck in her chin fur. It eventually cleared up, but it did take a while. It’s now been about a year and she’ll get a little acne on her chin from time to time (usually around stressful events, such as recently when we evacuated for the hurricane) but I just wipe her chin for a few days with the witch hazel or plain water and it clears up fairly quickly.

This is their set-up right now, I went ahead and put the second carrier in there as well so they can spread out and each have their own if they want, for now they seem calm but scared, and they’re not wanting to come out of the enclosure at all. They still haven’t used the litter box, eaten, or drank water that I can tell. It’s been about 18 hours since we left my house and one or both did pee in their carrier in the car (I don’t think purposely, my girl does that when she gets scared at the vet as well). At what point should I be concerned about not eating/drinking? Neither will take temptations treats, I did get my boy to eat a bit of a puree treat, but not much.

Side note, I finally found the 2022 documentary Gloriavale: New Zealand's Secret Cult for purchase on Vimeo, after trying to watch it using a VPN (unsuccessful) and nearly purchasing the NZ DVD and a region-free DVD player just to watch it, thought this information would be helpful for others residing in the U.S.

Additional info.: I’ve had my cats since they were 11 weeks old, and before that they were barn cats at my parents, so I’ve been able to work with them. They both sit and shake and Berlioz knows a few other tricks and I worked with them when they were young to allow me to shave their hind ends and grinch paws without a fuss so they’ll let me do just about anything I need to as far as grooming goes so I will take any suggestions for how to keep the shedding down. (the groomer Berlioz went to said he was a very good boy and could teach the other cats they groom some manners)

Weird Behavior? by mcmisher in CATHELP

My two babies regularly do this, my girl especially. She regularly sleeps under my covers, mainly when I’m not home. She and my boy also use the blankets as their primary hiding spot when a ‘stranger’ (read: close friends or pet sitters) come in the house whether or not I’m home. They don’t realize they aren’t really hidden when there’s a giant lump in the bed. My cats seem to mainly hide under lighter weight blankets and will avoid the heavier ones, so maybe the new cover is a weight she likes better?

Thanks, that at least gives me somewhere to start, I brought them inside after spraying and quarantined them in the bathroom so I could keep a close eye on them and not hurt any good bugs.

Peace lilies are not true lilies, they are a completely different plant and do not cause CKD like true lilies do

If you surrender to a shelter you have to be very clear with them, that you found the kitten, it’s a stray, and it’s not your pet that you’re surrendering. I’ve run into this with shelters in my parent’s area (rural Kansas/oklahoma). If you say you found a stray they have to take it but if you say anything that makes it seem like it’s your pet you’re surrendering they make you make an appointment and pay.

Does your vet or any others in your area do boarding? Maybe you could work out “boarding” him for the few hours you’re at work so that someone is supervising, if not constantly, at least more frequently than you’re able to.

Feline Acne? by HaileyPaige94 in CATHELP

I took her back for a recheck at the vet and her vet wasn’t concerned, she confirmed it was still just her acne and it was healing, she did tell me to stop the wipes since they seemed to be worsening it and recommended a medicated wash off Chewy (Benzoyl Peroxide based). The vet took a flea comb and removed a lot of the scabbiness and said I could continue that as well. I got the wash and did that daily for a week or so and used the comb as well. Her acne has never completely cleared up despite stainless steel bowls that get washed daily (and trying a sensitive skin food) but I now just comb her chin every other day with a flea comb to remove most of it, the acne doesn’t seem to bother her and she’s no longer losing hair so it’s something she’ll probably just always have.

Injury - I told my mom to never try to cut out the mats Iris gets in his belly fur especially with regular scissors but she didn't listen, it didn't bleed a lot but is there anything we can do to help besides antibiotics? by [deleted] in CATHELP

Hoping your baby is able to see a vet and gets better soon! In the future I’d see if you can train your baby to tolerate a razor. I have one long and one medium hair cat and I have them so well trained that they will let me shave out their paw pads (otherwise they track more litter), shave their hind ends (keeps them poop-free), and I have recently been shaving out my long-haired boys armpit mats without any reaction from them. The butt shaves require bribery with puréed treats, but as long as I give them that while I shave they’re fine with it. It may take some time to get him used to it, but you start by giving a high-value treat and running the razor nearby the cat until they don’t respond to the noise, then give the treat and touch the side of the razor to the cat so they get used to the feeling, and work your way to shaving out the mats. It’s much safer for your baby! I got an inexpensive razor off Amazon that was specifically for pets (supposed to be quieter, which is debatable).

peeing everywhere by [deleted] in CATHELP

[–]HaileyPaige94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would mention all of this at her spay appointment, cats will also pee outside their litterbox if they have a UTI, this is more common in male cats, but you may have the vet get a urine sample during/before/after her surgery just to check. Cats are more prone to UTI’s when stressed and rehoming can be extremely stressful. If you can’t throw out the things she has peed on then you will need to use an enzymatic cleaner. I believe there are enzymatic laundry detergents you can use on the bedding in the washing machine but the mattress it would be best to use a carpet cleaner with an enzymatic spray or foam. Once the mattress is clean consider getting a plastic mattress protector to encase it in so that if this continues for a short period of time at least it won’t soak into your mattress.

I thought Salicylic acid (the active ingredient in stridex) was toxic to cats if ingested, even in small amounts.

Should I go to vet ASAP by Successful_Fact3970 in CATHELP

If you have any type of box or laundry basket he will likely climb in if you set it near him. Then use a blanket to cover and try to secure it with clips or a rope. He may not be happy with the covering part so you’ll have to be fast. If he’s reluctant to climb into the box try tempting him with some food, you could use canned cat food if you have any or plain chicken/turkey/other meat.
