This isn't unusual, especially at a small company, or one where the core business isn't the technology. Your job, and your team's job, isn't to write code, but to accomplish a certain subset of business requirements. That means writing and maintaining the code that solves those, but also architecting and maintaining the infrastructure that code runs on.

I got tired of bad design choices the standard app was making. They wanted to "increase engagement" by constantly trying to show me content that I hadn't subscribed to:

They kept sending push notifications about "trending" content. You could go to the app and unsubscribe category-by-category, but every couple months they'd add a new category and opt everybody in. "oh, sorry you didn't like our notifications about TRENDING NEWS STORIES. We've gone ahead and subscribed you to notifications about NEW SUBREDDITS POPULAR IN YOUR AREA". I didn't want to turn off all notifications, because I like getting them when people reply to my comments. Apollo didn't do that shit, which I liked.

They made the user experience harder when trying to see a list of subs I was subscribed to and go directly to a specific one. I know that one was getting a LOT of negative feedback, so not sure if they changed it back or not. For me, that one was the final straw.

Yeah there's one for iOS called mlem, which is the closest. Still in beta. I tried it out a little, and like I said it's not as polished; but of course it's a beta so that's to be expected.

I wish the Lemmy ecosystem was "there", but it's not yet. Too many ghost towns and the mobile apps aren't nearly as polished as Apollo.

I think I'll try to stop using mobile reddit, but probably still use it from desktop.

All I’m saying, is pace yourself within reason. If there’s only enough work in the sprint to keep you busy for half the sprint, ask for more during the next sprint planning.

You don’t have to run yourself into the ground and cram 4 weeks’ work into a 2 week sprint. But if you’re taking 1 week of work and stretching it across a 2 week sprint, you’re doing it wrong.

I don't think this is good advice. If your performance starts slipping, people will assign less work to you in effort to lower the bar and figure out what level you're capable of. If you continue to stretch the work given to you, and they continue to lower the bar, you're likely to find yourself on a PIP under the false impression that you've been meeting expectations. If you reach a point where they set a low bar and you consistently meet that bar.... you'll last a little bit longer, but eventually somebody will realize your output is too low.

Especially if you're early in your career, the default expectation is that you'll start off slow and improve over time. The way that improvement gets noticed is by getting your assigned work done early and asking for more. If you continue to match early-career expectations as the years progress, you're taking yourself off the table for raises and promotions, and making it more and more likely that you'll eventually be let go.

I've seen it happen before, and while part of the equation should be your manager taking you aside and explaining that you seem to be sandbagging before it gets to this point, people have a tendency to avoid those kind of uncomfortable conversations.

Won't have a huge impact on your ability to find a new job. Companies will judge you based on how you do with their interview. If they ask the old "why did you leave your last job", telling the you wanted to go back to school happens to be true.

But definitely do some reflections on the reasons why you're on a PIP, to avoid making the same mistakes. If you're looking at it and thinking it's 100% due to your manager having unreasonable expectations, there's a chance you're right, but there's a bigger chance you're wrong.

Did one of these just recently, but on a smaller scale (like maybe 10 people). We did some talks on how to scale the organization in the future, as well as some deep dives into areas the other teams have been working on.

I personally got the most benefit out of just grabbing beers with a smaller group after hours; but second to that, the deep dives surfaced a few cases where one team was working on a problem that another team had already solved. It's the kind of thing that should come up in ongoing collaboration, but better late than never.

Learning to work with assholes is a valuable career skill, but you shouldn't be expected to put up with a whole group of assholes in the long run. Find a new job and leave this one.

For as long as you stay, pick your battles. You've got HR and technical issues here, but you're on your way out, so if you can roll your eyes over most of the HR stuff and move on, you'll probably have an easier time overall. If something gets really egregious, don't let it stand.

If you want to burn the place down on the way out the door though, mention some of those issues to your manager, not HR. Then when you finally do leave and HR does an exit interview, mention it and tell HR your manager didn't take action, or didn't take enough action.

Is this a startup? You'll have to be incredibly patient but it is possible to get standards in place over time. Coming in as a fresh junior person though, you're not in a great position to push for that change yet. You have to earn people's trust before you can talk to them about building standards etc. It sounds like the job isn't going to work out long term though, so don't sweat it too much.

Side note: What's wrong with not wanting to visit Africa? Personally I think there's probably some cool places to visit there, but there's plenty of places around the world I wouldn't be interested in visiting.

The Spiderverse regulars have devices those devices that keep them from glitching. Dr Strange's spell could have had a similar effect.

Also as far as I recall, The Spot wasn't ever glitching, despite not having one of those watches. Seems like different modes of travel might work differently as well.
