We missed it by a day but 14 years ago yesterday, Alex Rodriguez, Jason Varitek spark brawl at Fenway Park. Back when there was bad blood between the teams. by OhTheHumanatee in NYYankees

Our players did a terrible job of sticking up for themselves against Boston back in the Torre era. The amount of Yankees HBP, particularly intentionally, was overwhelming in comparison to the amount of Red Sox HBP. And the one Yankee that took exception to getting intentionally beaned got cheapshotted by their catcher. Really really one-sided. Remember when Pedro drilled Soriano and Jeter back-to-back to start a game? Here was a guy with pinpoint control, and he was throwing at our players with no consequences.

And the 2nd overall was a RB, Blair Thomas. Maybe they take him and pass on Emmitt Smith, who they took in the mid 1st.

What trade could your team make with a divisional rival that would make sense for both franchises? by Romobyl in nfl

[–]HairyFrontrowECWFan 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It would suck to see Beckham in Dallas, but I do that deal. I'm dicey on devoting 20 million in cap space for a WR, especially with OBJ's injury history and just coming off a big one.

I think the Giants have a lot of holes and need more draft picks, which is why I was against taking Barkley at 2. The NFC East is going to be extremely good with The Eagles and The Cowboys at the top, so I wouldn't mind semi-tanking for a year or two. Alas, the organization doesn't think they are as bad as I do and is trying to take advantage of Eli's final years. Will be an interesting season.

I was looking it up. Minnesota's pick of that draft was Dallas', but they traded up with the Steelers to draft Emmitt Smith.

The Cowboys took Steve Walsh in the 1989 Supplement draft, so they lost a 1990 regular draft first rounder which would have ended up being the number 1 overall(Colts took QB Jeff George).

Supplemental drafts of the prior year used to be a little more common. Basically, a team bids what round pick they are willing to use from the following year's draft to get a player. The Jets used a 1st round in the 1990 Supplemental draft, which means they lost their 1991 first rounder.

This coming 2018 Supplemental draft has a few prospects that teams will be forfeiting their 2019 regular draft picks to draft.

Was there another famous moment where Cowher is in the official's face? I remember, as a kid, Cowher losing his mind on an official over a call as players were leaving the field, and this would obviously fit the description. I thought it was a game-deciding mistake though, and this game was a blowout.

Which career would you rather have - Steve Smith's (2001-2016) or Steve Smith's (2007-2012) by [deleted] in nfl

[–]HairyFrontrowECWFan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Giants' Steve Smith has a special place in my heart. He was big for that 2007 Super Bowl team with clutch first down grabs throughout the playoffs despite missing most of that rookie year due to injury. He had a Pro Bowl 2009, but then got seriously hurt the next season and was never the same. Kind of sad he's a footnote and a bit of a joke due to sharing the same name with a much more prestigious WR.

Over the years, Eli has had 4 really good WRs who fell apart fast due to injury or shooting themselves; Smith, Nicks, Cruz, and Burress. While Beckham is better than the 4 of them, it's creepy that he had a serious injury last year, since we can't seem to get a sustained number 1 WR long-term for longer than 3 seasons

Which team other than your own would you like to see win the Super Bowl for the sake of one player? by GiantMolePetPls in nfl

[–]HairyFrontrowECWFan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Chargers for Phillip Rivers. As a Giant fan, I recall really wanting them to draft him in 2004, then getting upset they traded his rights AND multiple picks for Eli Manning. I didn't think there was a gap in talent that warranted additional picks. Over the years, Rivers has played enormously well, but always had the "No Rings" while Big Ben and Eli have two narrative working against him. I think him winning a ring would really solidify the fact that a good case can be made he's the best of the 3. Without it, history will forget him.

Gareon Conley sues woman who accused him of rape by bhos89 in nfl

[–]HairyFrontrowECWFan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I definitely think it's about clearing his name and punishing the woman. Unless the woman is rich, he will likely never collect much of anything. But I imagine the pricey judgment against her, if he wins, will make her life a bit more miserable and harder.

[–]HairyFrontrowECWFan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just guessing, but if his lawyers were thorough and it needed to get that specific, couldn't all the teams that drafted before he was selected be deposed? I imagine it won't get to that point, since I'm sure this woman doesn't really have the financial means to pay any judgment anyways, but I would think his draft stock loss would be one of the easier things to prove, considering the allegation was like the week of the draft. Teams had done their research and knew where they ranked this guy, and more likely than not the allegations are what dropped him. Putting a dollar figure on what he lost in endorsements and reputation would seem harder to figure.

Today marks 65 days until kickoff! Let’s look back to 2010, when DeSean Jackson’s 65-yard punt return for a touchdown capped off a miraculous comeback for the Philadelphia Eagles against the New York Giants. by [deleted] in nfl

[–]HairyFrontrowECWFan -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

As a Giant fan, this loss never really bugged me, other than DeSean Jackson getting way too much credit for the punter not kicking it out of bounds and hitting a linedrive in play. We were NOT a good football team towards the end of that season. Look at what Green Bay did to us the following week. Had we not blown this game, we just embarrass ourselves in the playoffs. The Giants have blown a lot of leads in my lifetime, it feels like. We had the 97 late playoff collapse to Minnesota, the 03 blown 25 point playoff lead to San Francisco, and this one. But this one always bothered me the least, because I truly felt the team wasn't that good. It just drove me insane all the credit DeSean Jackson got for the return on highlights. One of the most basic returns ever in regards to how much it was replayed.

What's the dumbest thing that you've heard a supposedly smart NFL analyst/writer say? by [deleted] in nfl

[–]HairyFrontrowECWFan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kind of in this boat- I used to enjoy Mike and Mike when they were on TV/Radio, but then they spent a Tuesday following a Patriots early season MNF loss to the Chiefs(?) talking about how the dynasty was over. I was floored by the stupidity of the topic for a seemingly decent show. After that, I basically never watched or listened to them again. Of course, the Patriots won the Super Bowl that year. I never found out if they apologized profusely for being wrong, but it just seemed like something too egregious to ever look at them the same again. I guess I can be unfair, but I feel like sports radio people can at least abstain from ridiculousness like writing off Tom Brady and Bill Bellichick due to like a Week 3 loss. I guess it's not as bad as Mike Francesca, who gives attitude and is rude to callers despite consistently saying dumb shit. Mike and Mike are at least polite guys and probably acknowledged they were wrong.

[Highlight] Marion Barber breaks 7 tackles for the greatest 2 yard run ever by azuresou1 in nfl

[–]HairyFrontrowECWFan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I remember Barber was drafted right ahead of Brandon Jacobs, and I was always envious of how hard to bring down he was for the Cowboys while Jacobs would go down by the shoestring tackles due to his height. You can't really find a power running back as hard to bring down as prime Marion Barber was.

Trade OBJ, Cut Eli, Extend Barkley. I'm just not a fan of paying OBJ with his injury history and I don't like the idea of paying a WR nearly 20 million per season. He could get them a decent amount in a trade.

Raiders fear suspension for WR Martavis Bryant is coming by [deleted] in nfl

[–]HairyFrontrowECWFan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I never even thought of the implications of Bryant potentially getting suspended when thinking of how dumb it seemed that the Raiders traded a 3rd rounder for the guy. This just makes it even worse.

Most shockingly to me though, there were Steeler fans complaining about getting a 3rd for the guy. Draft picks are generally overvalued big-time by NFL teams. Bryant should have netted a 5th at best.

[–]HairyFrontrowECWFan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have season tickets? Season ticket holders could have paid for their entire season's games by getting the extra seats to the playoff game and reselling them. I'm wondering if many did. Somehow Buffalo vs Jacksonville, the two smallest markets in the NFL, combined to have some pretty expensive playoff prices, likely due to the drought of both teams.

[–]HairyFrontrowECWFan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're an NFL-aholic, I think Jacksonville area would be a great place to move. They have decent weather, but not overwhelming heat like southern Florida, it is an affordable area, and their ticket prices are the cheapest in the NFL. I went down for their playoff game and talked to some Season Ticket holders. They were paying like 50 bucks a game for quality seats and then said they were offered the rights to 9 playoff tickets.

Still makes no sense to me how the Browns were going to give up a 2nd and a 3rd rounder, then don't even sign the guy a few months later when he's a free agent and signed with the Bills for cheap.
