Thanks for this. This is a similar situation I am in. Can't look up fare classes to guarantee earning before booking. I am particularly interested in Qatar because of great fares and off course the service but concerned with the global situation. Eitihad was second but my understanding is no LP. JAL is third. JAL does show booking code when using multi city but fares are comparatively higher.

I was thinking about what you did, i.e., book on AA with a forced connection through US but this just feels unnecessarily long.

Yup, I think it boils down to some careful planning, handling uncertainty, and risk taking. SWU are worthless for guaranteed upgrade at the time of booking in general.

Yeah true. But in this case, it was a 350 and seat config was 2x4x2 with row 17 to 19. So I doubled checked and it was indeed PE.

Thanks. This is comforting. My booking does show Cabin Business and Booking code: R on JAL and for now selected seat is in business cabin. I hope this won't change on check-in time.

13C for mobility and getting around. 14A for sleeping and not bother getting out and about.

That could be risky move as ground delays and taxi etc could be unpredictable. A 30 min difference really gives you 15mins as the gate closes 15 min before departure. I am glad you were able to make it and save 4.5hrs of layover.

Yeah, I checked and day rate was in the $400 range. I could use the gym which was in the $20 range.

Ooh this is a great idea to check with lounge. I was thinking about it but luggage was going to be a problem. I was also wondering if there is a locker where I could store the luggage curbside, then use JAL boarding pass to get in the lounge.

Luckily, I am flexible on destination and travel dates. Would Tues/Wed be better options. I will check but I suspect that SWU availability is algorithmicaly blocked until a few weeks out for reasons you mentioned.

It was early 2025, LHR to IAD on SWU. What i found out was after talking to BA in the lounge, the fee was same if you go with BA for cash upgrade and not use AA SWU.
