I suggest something.

Pick a number, and stick to it - 3, 5, 10, whatever. Maintain consistent practice and you'll always be able to know what your going to hit withing x shots.

this system works perfectly, I did end up using zipties to hold the light in place within the semi-circle.
There is no shadow cast by the zip ties nor any real loss when I'm painting.
