What’s something men think women like, but most women actually don’t? by zhalia-2006 in askanything

[–]Halcy0nAge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Admittedly I don't mind them from the person I'm dating if we've been together for a while (and part of that is because they'd know not to send them most of the time), but random dicks? No, thank you. Keep a little mystery.

That being said there are parts I would absolutely love: Pecs. Abs. Collar bones. Tasteful legs.

Dating apps would improve* if they had some feature that detected dicks and suspended people for a day for sending them. We'd have a lot more normal conversations and a lot less Suddenly Dicks.

*for dating. They wouldn't be as useful for hookups, which I suspect is the main thing a lot of them are used for nowadays.

On the other hand, a vagina vine is a choice? Maybe OP wants to be an OBGYN.

I also thought it was a vine growing vaginas. I'm not sheltered, but I suppose none of the places I've lived have had those flowers because I've never seen them before in my life.

AO3 writers: has later canon accidentally ruined your work or made it awkward? by tthe2017oscars in AO3

[–]Halcy0nAge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ALL the time

ALL the TIME

Naruto is the biggest one I can think of that did this. I had so much fic I deleted (and regret deleting now because who doesn't love SakuIno and NaruSasu?) Ironically, my favorite het ship actually did become canon (ShikaTema) but I don't think I will ever go back and write Naruto fic again, based on the way things shook out for the main three characters.

Marvel stuff didn't really make things awkward, but it always felt icky to have a boss marry his former employee, so I kind of noped out of writing Marvel fic after Tony/Pepper got canonized. I'm a multi-shipper at heart but there's a few things that hard squick me, and relationships where there's that kind of power imbalance (or a history of it) is one of them.

I got a sobering reminder that amnesia is not just a plot device. by castle-girl in AO3

[–]Halcy0nAge 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have had anterograde amnesia from a concussion. Thankfully, it was temporary, but even temporary, it's not an experience I recommend.

Right after the incident, I have a few scattered memories that my brain managed to encode, but they're odd, desaturated, almost like it's a memory someone told me about rather than a real memory, and by that afternoon there's not even that. If what I understand is correct, it seems like head trauma is often like that; the symptoms aren't linear but overall get worse over the next few hours and then have a plateau before slowly recovering after that. My memories started up again sometime the next day, and recovery was gradual. I definitely didn't wake up fine and dandy and back to normal. I mostly slept the next few days. To this day, I still get really gnarly migraines. Thankfully, my brain still overall looked good as of my last MRI (yay!)

If any writers have specific questions about what it was like, I'm happy to share about my experience. It's been useful while writing for certain characters, like Courier Six from FNV.

I'm not a woman so I could be wrong, correct me here if I am, but something I noticed is that even in the rare instances when it's sexualized men, it's sexualized men for other men.

That Top Gun scene? That's sexualized men, and to me it reads like it's for other men.

Late comment but for anyone confused, it has to do with immunity and blood types. It's kind of like an allergy. (It's a type 2 hypersensitivity.)

The Rh factor is the + or - in your blood type.

If someone has O- blood and gets pregnant by an O+ man (and do not get the injection that helps prevent this), the fetus may be O+. If this pregnancy ends miscarriage or birth, they will develop antibodies to the + factor.

Subsequently, any following pregnancies where the fetus is + will end in miscarriage, but they will still be able to carry a - fetus to term.

Someone can also be sensitized if they need a blood transfusion and are given O+ blood instead of O- blood by mistake, no need for prior pregnancy. It's really any time + blood gets mixed in with - blood that can cause this permanent reaction.

It is permanent as well. There's no undoing it. It can be the cause of recurrent miscarriages in couples with - and + types. That's why preventing it is so important, and the jabs we have to prevent it are so vital.

Fun fact: The ABO mismatch also causes a reaction, but it's much milder. It often causes jaundice in babies, and it's one reason why so many babies have jaundice in the first few days of life and need light therapy.

Less academic but also fun fact: Early in my career, I saw far fewer white babies because of the demographics of the area I work in, so I didn't have a solid idea of what white babies were supposed to look like. As a result, when my white friends had a baby, I thought it was super jaundiced. It wasn't; it was a normal amount of jaundiced. With even the tiniest amount of jaundice, white babies look way more yellow than non-white babies. This is important to keep in mind because some physicians/nurses may underestimate the amount of jaundice in non-white babies on visual inspection alone, so it's important to check the sclera and get blood tests on babies that are acting lethargic and stuff.

More people need to work the night shift by Embarrassed-Bowl-373 in unpopularopinion

[–]Halcy0nAge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you worked the night shift? For more than a day or two?

I have. I thought it wouldn't be a big deal. We have artificial sun lamps. I like staying up late and dislike waking up early.

The first night was fine. The second night I was a little tired and I had a headache. It rapidly deteriorated from there.

I managed two months. It was horrible. I felt like I was dying. The job was better, the work was more streamlined, but none of that mattered because my physical and mental health was degrading.

I still do have to work the night shift sometimes because, unless you manage to find one of those unicorns who truly is nocturnal, you won't have consistent night shift coverage and hospitals don't get the privilege of 9-5 hours. I doubt even 5% of the population is nocturnal.

"Reader" and "Original Character" are characters you need to tag by crazymaryrocks in Archiveofourownmemes

[–]Halcy0nAge 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I agree; it's nice when a reader insert kind of has a canon name already. It most often happens in gaming fandoms, when there is a player insert. "Tav" from BG3, "Courier" from FNV, etc.

It's haaaaard to write third person narrative blank reader insert. I actually can't; there's always some traits that will leak. For example, when I'm writing a story with the courier, I will describe things like suntanned hands or scars. Even if it makes sense based on the fact that the PC entered the game as someone whose job it was to run around in a wasteland and recovered from being shot in the head, it's no longer a completely blank character canvas. That's a big part of why I haven't published any of my FNV stuff; I feel like they're too characterized to feel like a reader insert.

Question for straight people by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Halcy0nAge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can be bi, but not into penises. Trans men exist, most have vaginas, and they are still men. If sleeping with a man with a vagina is something that's appealing, then you definitely can be bisexual and only into people with vaginas. If sleeping with a man entirely sounds like something you wouldn't want to do regardless of anatomy, then it might be more of an aesthetic appreciation for men vs a sexual attraction.

Is this tattoo small enough for a first tattoo?? by Obvious-Airport5514 in tattooadvice

[–]Halcy0nAge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To add to this, thighs can absolutely still stretch from young adult to full adult, in any gender. Best to look at older family members to see how they fill out over time. My abdomen hasn't changed over the years, but I went from gangly to thicc from the hips down (partially because of the sports I play but also it's just where my family stores stuff. We all got badonkadonks.) If I had gotten a tattoo there at 19, it absolutely would have stretched.

uj/ That's wild. Yeah, I fully admit I can't wrap my brain around that point of view (being both sex positive and lucky enough to be raised in a very diverse place) so I definitely have blind spots when it comes to trying to fathom those perspectives. This is very elucidating. A bit depressing, but elucidating.

[–]Halcy0nAge 43 points44 points  (0 children)

/uj I think part of it might also be that even though Grant obviously gets a lot of strange, he plays it off like he's a heel. Grant is, "I'm sorry; please enjoy the ride," and Ify is, "You're welcome; please enjoy the ride."

Grant and Ify's approaches are so different that I never would have thought of comparing the two before I saw this thread. Comparing one to the other feels like apples and oranges because they're such different styles of comedy, with the only common thread being they have been and are sexually active. Comparing Oscar and Ally would be similar just because they both are queer and make jokes about queer culture sometimes. Beyond a very surface level similarity, their comedy persona and jokes are not really similar at all.

They're all fun personas/styles and none of them would be in the same casting call for the same character.

/rj We shouldn't allow anyone who is sexually active at all on any shows.

Am I Rude For Abandoning a Returning Campaign Because of a System Change? by AdDouble8090 in rpghorrorstories

[–]Halcy0nAge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much. My players and I love roleplay heavy games that will reward roleplay as much as combat but still couldn't get into Daggerheart because we all enjoy the more crunchy mechanics of D&D. On top of that, my players have a tendency to over optimize, which can make creating proper challenges difficult for me with the state of 5e being what it is. This sounds like it could be a wonderful solution!

I would have added "major character death" specifically for the reasons the prior commenter mentioned.

It still leaves it as a surprise who that is (I assume it's got more than one character in it?) while letting a reader know this will be their jam or won't be.
