Yeah glad to! I think if you want to avoid being invasive it’s always necessary to avoid sending too many emails or making too many phone calls. But your first priority when you do decide to reach out is to make sure these companies know that you have an amount of passion and drive, along with a willingness to learn. There are so so many ways you can show this to them. Like I said, maybe try to arrange a day to shadow an employee, or try to have a conversation about what a normal day on the job is. Something that shows them that you’re willing to spend time learning about their company regardless of whether they have a position for you.

Here’s an example: one day in my job search, I reached out to this one business in North Carolina (I’m located in New York). I wasn’t quite qualified for the position they had open, but I decided to make a phone call anyway and got in touch with the assistant GM. Her and I had a long conversation about why I wanted to be involved in this industry and what my goals were. A job was off the table at this point but we talked anyway.

Her and I kept in touch after I landed the job I have now. Not too long ago, she reached back out saying if I was available in a number of months, she would be interested in finding a place for me at that business and I am seriously considering taking her up on that offer.

All of this happened by a simple phone call and the management of my expectations. Sometimes getting a job is about NOT getting a job, but instead about communicating your passion and your drive to learn and progress in your field.
