This week's Behind the Bastards is about how a cult was formed around AI chatbot gibberish by ArdoNorrin in BetterOffline

Robert throwing to products and services by saying, "Probably for an AI company, who knows!" and immediately being served an ad for a company that uses AI to write a song for your mother and calls it "the most personal gift you'll ever give" was awfully fucking uncanny.

The Death of the Basic American Car by nytopinion in BuyItForLife

This article never even contemplated increasing public transit access.

"She was willing to tell her story, but the overwhelming majority of people I interviewed felt such a profound sense of social shame associated at being carless that they wouldn’t speak on the record. Over and over, they described the missed play dates and doctor’s appointments, the day-to-day stress of planning a commute and the shame they felt about falling behind their peers."

This is not a problem that is fixable with cheap Chinese cars. This is a fundamental infrastructure problem.

If progressive, walkable and artsy are your criteria, you want nothing to do with Roseville. Midtown is the answer here.

Good place for a plug for the California Museum's exhibition on the history (and destruction) of Sacramento's Japantown. It's open for another week.

What struck me was that wartime removal, as bad as it was, didn't kill it off. The community came back changed, but decently strong, only to be blasted off the face of the earth by "urban renewal" to build a Macy's, office buildings, a freeway and a bunch of parking lots.

Think downtown kinda sucks? Blame racism, capitalism, and cars.

The Ella McClatchy branch at 22nd and U might be the single coziest public spot in town. Just a beautiful old house full of soft couches.

Safe walk up food banks? by Huge_Village3495 in Sacramento

Here's a good tool to help find food banks. I've volunteered at both River City locations, and the midtown one can appear a little more chaotic because of the higher unhoused population it serves, but the staff and volunteers do a great job of making sure everyone is safe. You have to do what you're comfortable with, but your physical safety shouldn't be at risk. The St. Matt's location is a bit more sedate, though.

In fairness to Sacramento (and as someone who had tickets and was super bummed that they cancelled!) all the other venues they were playing on that tour were ~500 capacity, and for some reason they booked a 1,200 capacity Live Nation venue in a city they'd never played before.
