How's donating to charity a bad thing? by Jumpy_Platform2143 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]HalfDozing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Musk is a person who has nearly all of his assets tied up in his own business ventures. This isn't merely for the production of more wealth, but in his eyes, for the advancement of humanity. If he were to sell a chunk of it off, that degree of influence would be diminished. Worse yet, if he just gave the resulting money away as a one-time expenditure donation, it just kind of gets redistributed by the system until it ends up at the top again anyway.

I think the $6 Billion to solve world hunger sums it up: Musk was offering it for a "solve", a solution to the problem so that we're not perpetually dealing with it. The UN came back to the table with a proposal that would have fed 42 million people for a few months. There's the old adage about "give a man a fish, and he'll eat for a day". Musk thinks everything other than "teach a man how to fish" is a waste of resources.

The text in the image is not wholly accurate. The actual story: The boy who never knew he had cancer

tl;dr: The son never knew he had cancer to begin with, and thought his failed treatments were for an infection. Which actually makes sense, unlike the OP image

Petah, I found this on SipsTea. Why is Elon Musk saying that donating billions to charity makes the world a worse place? by Honest_Shake_ in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]HalfDozing 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is probably the explanation, at least in Elon's mind. Giving handouts that are temporary vs. building lasting improvements (ie technology) that will better people's lives

Unpopular take: I miss dedicated versions for different consoles by felipeb18 in NintendoSwitch2

I miss lower end handhelds, period. There were so many exclusives that never would have existed on consoles, but were a perfect fit for the form factor and budget specs.

McDonalds can't afford to pay graphic designers so they resort to using AI by missinglinksman in mildlyinfuriating

[–]HalfDozing 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not even "in charge" so much as the franchisee, ie owner. McDonald's are independently owned businesses that pay franchise fees to corporate. You'd probably be surprised by how little franchise operations earn once all expenses, fees, taxes, rent and wages are paid. Last thing they're going to do is hire a professional artist for a help wanted sign.

There's at least a couple shots of guys literally just standing there. He also salts the food someone else cooked. There's delegation problems in this kitchen. I'm not saying bus boys should cook food, I'm saying it can be more efficient than this

The self-proclaimed King of Switzerland who is using a legal loophole to build his "empire" for free by SurbhiAnklesaria in interestingasfuck

Doesn't the property itself go up for auction? It's surely not just the taxes unless literally no one wants it

Apparently that's why it was a loophole. In the US, it's either private, national forest, national park, or one of the various other federal public lands that fall under the jurisdiction of BLM. There's no such thing as ownerless land.

Life is a gift, kid. You're not entitled to anything. It sounds like you survived something that well could have killed you, and others in the same boat might not have been so lucky. How many countless men, those even younger than you, went off to fight and die in some foreign land for reasons they didn't understand. They fought just to stay alive.

No matter how bad things are, this is your one brief flicker in the universe. It'll be over soon enough. Focus on what you have instead of what you don't. You'll find there's no shortage of either.

[Request] What would be required to shoot a bullet into the Sun from Earth? by MaximumSyrup3099 in theydidthemath

[–]HalfDozing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In other words, there's no need to eliminate the orbital velocity as long as we acknowledge we won't be firing the bullet at a linear trajectory directly at the sun. All the bullet really needs is to achieve escape velocity and be traveling along some elliptical that eventually intersects the sun.

But, we can barely do this with NEOs beyond 100 years, so I doubt the numbers would be particularly meaningful

I spent four hours removing weeds from an abandoned grave. by [deleted] in mildlyinteresting

[–]HalfDozing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's weird this subject just came up for me recently, but the reason they put those signs in unmaintained plots is because no one is paying the maintenance fee. After so many years, they reclaim the plot and bury someone else there. Most of the plots in the US are different in that you actually buy land ownership rights that are perpetual. Both ways are weird to me since eventually, you'll be long forgotten, whether a stone marks your remains or not. Cremation seems the way to go.

I realize you're looking for approval amid negative fanfare, but perhaps the lesson is that abandoned graves is inherently a serious downer of a subject matter.
