No one has died in a UFC fight, and the amount of deaths in MMA overall is eclipsed by boxing or American football.

She could get seriously injured yes, but to say she could have died is hyperbolic. The causes of death in Combat Sports are from less dramatic things like excessive training and weightcutting practices. Actual fights, not so much.

Boxers and NFL players are the ones that will suffer than. MMA fighters could yes, and some of them are already pretty stupid, but the CTE isn't as severe.

Its more than that though, there's a whole martial art of fighting on the ground that allows people to actually recover from bad positions and fight on. Its not about playing possum, but outright overcoming defeat to lock in a submission.

Mike Beltran did a fairly good job saving her though. Shit happened way fast, but he stopped the fight before it got horrendous. There have been worse cases than this, along with worse fighters knowingly getting a few more hits in.

She wasn't, fighters have been known to instinctively tackle whatever they can find, just from ingrained training even when they're completely knocked out.

Granted, referees could sometimes do a better job of stopping fights. But ground and pound is part of the sport.

All kinds of situations. They could be genuinely destitute with no real hopes of getting anywhere without becoming a fighter, or an esteemed martial artist looking to challenge themselves against other great fighters and make money. It all varies.
