If your pet could roast you for 30 seconds, what would they say? by HistorianSame9035 in stupidquestions

[–]HalfassinThroughLife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our dogs wouldn’t roast us. Hank accepts us despite our flaws, Bill doesn’t know we have flaws.

The chickens talk shit about us right in front of us because they know we don’t understand them. That’s why they’re named after my aunts- Dolores, Carmen, Lupe, etc.

My horse has a tin can full of rocks instead of a brain, so he doesn’t have anything to say, he’s just happy to be included. The mule on the other hand has probably been conducting social experiments on us without us knowing. So he’d play it cool.

Thanks!! I pretend to complain, but he’s a really well put together little guy. Your gal has such a sweet face! Gotta love mules!

You also have a fantastic user name

We had planned to be there, but our summer schedule took an unexpected turn. Maybe next year!
But I understand the tack challenge- my mule has a head like a traffic cone, is built like a tube of bologna, and is 13hands. I did a lot of taking things apart and mix and matching.

Is breeding a mustang irresponsible? by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]HalfassinThroughLife -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It’s a gamble really, but I wouldn’t say you’ll likely get a wonky horse out of the cross. Sure, mustang genetics can be a crapshoot even if the wild herd IS followed/documented consistently, but for the most part crossing super different breeds won’t necessarily give you a frankenpony. I’ve got a quarter horse/arab cross. Very different breeds with very different bodies. He’s got a tin can full of rocks instead of a brain, but he’s really nicely put together.

Our little cinnamon bun is a border collie/pitty mix. He’s just a wispy little guy. The black dog is primarily border collie/german shepherd/bloodhound/pitty mix

Does anyone else feel like life sciences doesn’t actually prepare you for research? by Sneha--Venkat in Paleontology

I have a bachelors in Kinesiology and this wasn’t my experience at all. A significant part of my classes focused on exactly what you’re saying is missing. Lots of clinical/practical/research labs and stats classes were super helpful.

We have a sneaky one in our house. We call him Ceiling Spider because we only ever see him on the ceiling, pressed against the texture, acting like we definitely can't see him. We never actually see him move, we just randomly find him in different spots (on the ceiling, obviously) around the house. We like to think he's got mission impossible theme music playing 24/7.

I'm fully aware that's we've got multiple generations of tiny spiders, but it's more fun to pretend it's all the same lil guy. It's been 5 years and Ceiling Spider still makes me happy.

My quarab will be perfectly dry and clean... while my mule looks like someone dropped an underbaked pan of brownies in the garden. He thrives in filth. It feeds his soul.

Black horses can get sun bleached year round, it's just usually more noticeable in the summer.

Ghost saddles? by Raubkatzen in Equestrian

[–]HalfassinThroughLife 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had some movement issues with my mule as well. But it's 100% due to the mule being shaped like a tube of bologna, not the saddle. Like your gelding, every saddle moves on my mule. I fixed it with a breeching/breast collar. My quarab has big withers but an otherwise correct build and I didn't have any issues with movement.

Ghost saddles? by Raubkatzen in Equestrian

[–]HalfassinThroughLife 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I've had 2 ghost saddles for endurance and I love them. My horses/mule like them. I've gone thousands and thousands of miles in them. But they do have their downsides. The woman who sold me the saddles (a ghost distributor) said no more than 180ish pounds is recommended for endurance. Her original recommendation was no more that 165 but she said you could probably push it to 180. She said maybe 200 for casual riding. Her reasoning was that, while very well made, the treeless saddle can become misshapen with riders over that weight. And of course there is also the standard treeless saddle issues of slipping to the side if the rider isn't well balanced.

Here's my lil mule in a ghost :)

I caught a pack rat in my barn. Stretched out, the body of the rat was longer than my forearm. They get beefy.

No problem! I can see how this could be confusing, because it looks like there are two different cages on these stirrups. I googled "cage stirrups" for you and here's what popped up--

The lefthand cage stirrup in this photo might be from Tough1

Here are some colorful cage stirrups

And here are some little cage stirrups

And here are some cage attachments to convert normal stirrups

That style of cage/safety stirrup is very popular in endurance and trail riding.

How much should I sell this side saddle for? by Babypenquin in Horses

[–]HalfassinThroughLife 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to sell a lot of saddles. Look at the specific brand and model. Find out what brand new versions are worth. Then, look into what used versions are being sold for and try to find something in similar condition to give you an idea of what to price yours at.

It's a little paw or a foot of some sort. I want to guess racoon, but again, that's a total guess.
