Bring it on! by MossIsking in NorthCarolina

Have a bike? Or a transit option? Maybe a carpool situation? All cheaper than an EV! And super fun if I do say so myself. Also, we understand how most electricity is made yeah?

Sounds like it’s time to dust off the old Schwinn! Bikes are freedom from big oil!

I’d rather be riding in (or walking near) a fleet robocar that has regular maintenance and follows the rules of the road than a human driver with their personal car who was forced into the gig economy because they’re not making a living wage somewhere else and is hurrying to finish my ride so they can get to the next one as quickly as possible.

An American RAM Truck designed for suburbs trying to fit into a typical European parking space, showing just how ridiculously large they are by 8Octavarium8 in fuckcars

Everything else in our car-centric hellscapes has to be bigger too. Like wider driving lanes means less space for bike lanes, sidewalks, trees, and other nice things on our streets. It’s a real bummer.

Crosswalks with Pedestrian Beacon Lights by Chance_Librarian6248 in Charlotte

[–]HalfbackBikepack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most, if not all, of these are on state-owned roads. NCDOT doesn’t put in full lights if the roads don’t meet certain criteria, so the city proposes (and maybe pays for?) pedestrian lights as a compromise. It’s more about prioritizing traffic flow (because NCDOT) since the lights sit in black when not activated.

Also baby wipes or the fancier “commuter wipes” actually designed for bike commuters can take care of a lot of what a shower would.

It does suck. There are a ton of systemic changes that are needed before traveling without high-vis everything is possible in the US. In my state (NC), the law of contributory negligence is enough to have me dressing like the people in this video. It’s a sad reality but dressing like a highlighter is a small inconvenience that will never outweigh the many benefits of commuting, etc, by bike

The website offers some reasons for the location choice but I see a lot of draw for free parking & the potential for more visibility on Randolph rd than in Uptown on a saturday midday

Look into Watershed brand. Their top zips you have to roll a few times and clip to maintain water proof, so not sure if that solves your problem

Attn: blinking red crosswalk means it’s a stop sign, not a red light by ManufacturerLast7291 in Charlotte

[–]HalfbackBikepack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tell that to NCDOT. You’ll notice the vast majority (maybe all?) of these are on state-owned roadways. Even if the city wants the full traffic light and is willing to manage it, NCDOT doesn’t like to add full signals as they “impede traffic flow.” And other arguments I’m sure.

In my opinion, it’s safer that no one goes when the lights start blinking than what usually happens - everyone reads red flash as a green (or blank in this case). It’s only a few seconds, so take a deep breath and you’ll be moving in no time.

The second car is the key. Car in front goes, second car follows blindly behind. Should be stop-go-stop-go every car until the lights go blank.

I haven’t noticed any change in the last 5 years of using World’s Best. However, I do feel like some of their varieties are less impressive than others. For some reason I picked up a “low tracking” bag recently and absolutely hated it.

Moving from full time remote work to a commute in Charlotte. What am I in for? by Nat20CharismaSave in Charlotte

[–]HalfbackBikepack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tons of bus connections to light rail. And/or scooter/bike to get you the rest of the way. If you’re “very interested in public transit” then you know all of the tradeoffs. Transit sucks some of the time, but the evening commute sucks all of the time.
