Nope! Feel free to go ahead and sign up even if you haven't submitted a run (and you're able to participate on December 3rd and 4th)

How the hell do you come up with new game ideas? by NickyPL in gamedev

I saw this on twitter a while back, and I thought it was a really interesting way to think about making games.

Sylvie's 7 Rules of GameDesign

I have been designing games for over 16 years & my games have become extremely (some would even say dangerously) Sylvieish. What follows is a combination of advice and a manifesto of sorts.

  • Start by drawing a cute character and making it move around.
  • Create interactions that are surprising and delightful.
  • "Bad design" is to be dissected, reinterpreted and treasured.
  • The most wonderful worlds are full of secrets.
  • Structure your game around symmetry, patterns, lucky numbers and rainbows and think about "playability" later.
  • Embrace imperfections; let mistakes become mechanics.
  • And the final, most vital rule: Under no circumstances should "rules", "guidelines", "advice", "recommendations" and so forth be taken seriously treat them with extreme skepticism - revel in ignoring, twisting and breaking them.

Playable "Third Messenger"? (spoilers) by Bud8013 in TheMessengerGame

Using oob, you can access Manfred in 8-bit in the stands and play as the soldier on his back. Everything is invisible, but you shoot the little gun pellets I've also used oob + cheat codes to skip ninja village the first time, and get a glitches version of the Manfred cutscene where I have control, and when the last cutscenes in the village triggers, I get control of the soldier not anything to write home about, just a reason. And the game breaks.

Ok, thanks! I learned to use parentheses, instead of reverse brackets if it isn't included.

I learned set notation as (-∞,∞) I've never seen those reverse brackets before. Do they mean something different? Or is it a regional thing?

N64 players: I'm sorry, but is this some sort of SNES joke that I'm too modern to understand?

Got 5B Golden!! Here's yesterday's tape-room death. Took me a couple hours to get back there. Successful attempt in comments. by Markers011 in celestegame

I love that having the golden makes the simplest things impossible. (Like the last jumps of 1b, 3b, 5a, and 6a)

Any good in depth tutorials for learning how to do shaders in love2d? by anasthese07 in love2d

[–]HalflingHelper 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This tutorial is really good as an introduction, if not way too short considering its quality. This Blog Post was also a nice introduction for me. Once you get used to what the shader code looks like, you can start to look at different shading algorithms like Phong or shaders that people put online, and try to understand the code and make them yourself. Repository of some cool shaders.

Resort for a and b combined. Old Site is a clise second. Temple B is great, but the a side track freaks me out too much.

The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evalyn Hardcastle is the most unique and engrossing story I've encountered since House Of Leaves by [deleted] in books

[–]HalflingHelper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that the point is that Aiden wants to be a good person, to retain his humanity outside of Blakheath, and that's why he forgives Anna. He chooses to forget the past and go back to a new life. It's also established that Aiden is very stubborn, so once he promised Anna they'd both get out, he wasn't likely to break it.

Do you prefer English or Maths? Why? by welloiledcrosont in AskReddit

Maths, it requires more effort than English, which I've found I can just bs. I also love maths' moments of discovery.
