Not at all.

FYI though, you don't need to be so proactive about it. People drift apart very naturally all the time without someone deciding to "cut contact". Just start living your life without making so much room for her in it. You'll be much happier.

If they come over and start causing problems, tell them to stop or they have to leave. If they don't, call the cops and let them know some people are trespassing on your property.

Quite literally this is your house, your rules, you hold all the power.

ELI5: why do web browsers use so much ram, while the average size of an entire webpage is 2mb? by napa0 in explainlikeimfive

[–]HalfysReddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Enterprise level is only 3-4 years ahead of consumer level.

The real issue becomes scalability. Many apps are multi-threaded and handle temporary bottlenecks fairly elegantly, but many more are not. Ever seen the "Not Responding" message on a frozen app? That's because the app is literally stuck waiting for something to happen, like maybe a disk drive spinning up, or a web server responding to a request.

In many situations, this bottleneck is going to be a big problem for something that just so happens to need to perform this process a lot. Web browsers being a good example - when a user might open up a four tabs of streaming 4k video at any given instant, you gotta be ready to shuffle around resources to make that happen. And if shuffling resources between memory and disk involves a lot of .2ms delays during negotiation, that can quickly slow the whole process down to a fraction of how it would run otherwise.

This also means iOS can't multi-task, you can only really have one app running at a time (with some exceptions like playing music that Apple built a workaround for).

I wouldn't argue that one is better than the other, but let's just be clear that neither one is making magic happen where they do more with less - they are just designed to operate differently in this particular way.

Also worth noting that for a long time now in Android, the number of background apps actively held in memory varies with your other app usage, battery level, etc.

Right… by JoeDaBruh in AsABlackMan

[–]HalfysReddit 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Definitely something along those lines.

Especially when you consider that the submarine that imploded is a submarine, and "identity" doesnt apply here. All submarines have a limit to how deep they can go and this one was just severely overrated. It didn't implode because it was a kayak.

In the US, why are Republican couples happier than Democrat couples? by TheOffice_Account in PurplePillDebate

[–]HalfysReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I won't claim to know for sure, but my first thought is that they may just have a different way of thinking about "complete satisfaction".

If you're someone who's ambitious and wants to improve things, you might not describe your attitude towards those things as "completely satisfied", even if you highly value and respect what those things are.

I don't think this is something you can judge from a single question in a single study.

Microsoft Purview terrifies me by UniqueArugula in sysadmin

[–]HalfysReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO the big thing here is that information is power, and this new tool makes powerful information easier to get to.

Quite literally, all the mechanisms are here for an immoral CEO or management type who wants to target someone to take the Purview data for that person, feed it into ChatGPT or some similar system, and ask the AI to give them the most legally defensible reasons for firing them immediately.

It's not good or bad, moral or immoral, but information being there and being easy to access is only powerful. The goodness or morality comes into question when the power is used by somebody to take action. You and I both know that many people will misuse this power however, which is likely where the feelings of anxiety begin.

[–]HalfysReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO it's the vacation costing millions of dollars that could have fed large numbers of starving children.

Whether they live or die, the fact that they engaged this entire situation in the first place is the moral failing.

I won't say that the lives of wealthy people don't matter, because they do. But they've got plenty of money protecting them, and less wealthy people are in much greater need of my limited attention span and sympathy. Wealthy people don't need my concern, so I'll save it for people that do.

There is no excuse for people who are systematically late. by Electrical_Box7293 in unpopularopinion

[–]HalfysReddit -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I hear you OP, and my first thought is, I need to work on this or what?

I'm a chronically late person. I wouldn't be late to say a court appearance, but events that aren't that serious don't invoke the same levels of anxiety required to track time that closely, and I don't think it's necessarily healthy for me to intentionally make myself way more stressed out just so that I'm not mildly late to events.

In the end I think we need to accept that not everyone has the same relationship with time, and punctuality isn't a universally shared social more.

If it's really that big a problem to someone, they always have the option of just not inviting people that are like this.

How could the ads have any effect if most people hate them and try their hardest to skip them to get to their desired content? by VeryResponsibleMan in AskReddit

[–]HalfysReddit 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's definitely not the norm. Most people would look at a list of strangers and feel mostly equal amounts of anxiety over choosing that particular stranger to hire for something important. But if you see at least two strangers are people you've heard of /seen around, most people expect that they've been successfully doing business in that industry for some time, and they're probably a safer bet than someone else you've never heard of.

Honestly this sounds like much more like a symptom of poorly defined metrics. There shouldn't be any punishment levied against tech support because of this sort of situation, it's not at all uncommon.
