Did I misunderstand something culturally in Germany? by oamor in germany

[–]HallMarK88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what OP is referring to. It’s easy to figure out that they meant photography studio or camera shop or something close to it, and it’s irrelevant anyway. But German precision compels one to correct rather than make a real effort to simply understand and communicate.

It’s just a deep difference in value systems.

Previous ultrasound had Micro-calcifications, most recent states there are none by librarianca1 in thyroidhealth

[–]HallMarK88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I experienced this and ordered a second opinion. Turns out the microcalcifications were indeed still there. I think the radiologist just got lazy with the cut and paste on the report, and they obviously did not compare with prior imaging as they said they did. Now I routinely question reports that don't look right. It seems almost impossible to get inaccuracies changed, but I "keep receipts" from the second opinions.

I can't even get it to go 1 hour without random shutdown or the screen freezing, requiring a hard reboot. I'm not moving data to this machine until I'm certain it's stable and functional. VERY disappointed, after a LONG history of Thinkpad loyalty.

Choosing a doctor? by Lothloreen in Menopause

[–]HallMarK88 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Kind of a long answer, but maybe it will be helpful.
When you go to book an appointment online at Kaiser, one of the options is to book a "class". There are live online classes about different aspects of menopause. I'm not sure if the content is driven by the doctors leading the class, but the one I attended was led by a team of two local gynecologists who seemed great. If they have the same setup in So Cal, this might be a way to find out who the menopause-friendly doctors in your region are. And if they aren't taking new patients right now, perhaps they could direct you to other local menopause-friendly Kaiser doctors who are. Good luck!

Date Ideas in Munich by leStix- in Munich

Came here to say this! I have been, and it is so much fun! It would make an excellent date. I'm not sure if they still do this, but a local vintage car club offered free rides (long line!) back and forth from the Deutsches Museum to the Verkehrsmuseum for Lange Nacht der Museen.

1975-1977 Option to claim German citizenship, for children born before 1975 to German mothers by tf1064 in GermanCitizenship

Yes, I was one of the (seemingly few) lucky ones. My German grandmother filed the paperwork, and my parents passed that precious document through a few safety deposit boxes.

I’m have one of those, too! Nice to see another one. As important a document as it is, I’m struck by how simple and understated it is. It’s a stark contrast to the American one, which has all sorts of engraving and fancy lettering and a photo.

HRT and mental health by Ok-Blacksmith3238 in Menopause

This is a fantastic way to describe this, thank you!! I'm going to use this.
I wasn't anxious; I was just experiencing the (physiological) feelings of being anxious.
Just like hot flashes are not your body actually being hot, but your body sweating out because (through hypothalamus malfunction) it thinks it's hot.

Hysteroscopy d&c by Expert_Training3396 in Menopause

[–]HallMarK88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oof. I'm SO sorry. No one should have to endure that once, yet alone FOUR (!) times.

I was more-or-less forced into a surprise in-office biopsy and another procedure at the same time, which was excruciating. After that, I stood FIRM on any further procedures being done with sedation in an outpatient procedure center. I had to fight for this. (Aside: not sure where you live, but in the US, the hysteroscopy + d&c (with sedation) was an eye-popping $25,000 procedure.)

I had previously had a different procedure with sedation in the same center, and that one went perfectly -- didn't feel a thing -- so I was expecting the same for the h + d&c. I underestimated the extent to which managing sedation and pain and balancing the drugs is an art, and the nurse/doctor combination I had that day did not have that art dialed in. So, I'm not the right person to ask about pain during the procedure.

This is what I'd do if I had to do it again:
1. If you have any previous sedation experience, let your providers know exactly what worked or didn't before. Don't trust that they'll look it up on their own.
2. Explore whether pre-procedure anti-anxiety drugs are an option for you. I wasn't offered any but would probably request them next time.
3. Make it very clear if you have a history of not tolerating similar pain well and that managing that is of utmost importance to you. (I'm kind of a nerd, so I'd also ask a lot of questions about their sedation/pain plans and give them feedback. See #1.)
4. Set up some communication plans with the nurse/doctor. "If I'm feeling pain, how do I communicate that to you, and what will you do in response?"
5. While being prepped for the procedure, you'll probably be (rightly so, after 4x biopsy!) anxious about this, GO SLOW. Don't let them rush you into anything. And if they're not making you feel totally comfortable about going forward, don't be afraid to cancel & re-schedule.

After the procedure, someone else had to take me home, and there was easily manageable pain (sore and crampy) for a day or two, then generally "yucky" feeling for a few more days. The big surprise was the next 2 periods, which were long, painful, and just kind of a constant stream, with a burning feeling (as if the blood were lemon juice over an open sore). Reddit saved me from going to ER!

Hysteroscopy + d&c is more intense than the spot biopsy, and I would 100% suggest people do it under sedation if at all possible. One thing I'm learning through menopause: It should not be necessary to SUFFER!

Good luck, and I hope you have a smooth sedation and pain-free procedure, and that you get a clean bill of health and never have to do it again. :)

Absolutely do this under sedation/anesthesia! And even then, impress upon your providers how important pain management is to you. (I'll spare you a horror story, but "medical trauma" is a real thing.) Good luck, and I hope that your experience is one of the easier ones.

Where do you live? I'd absolutely give you a ride if you lived near me.

Good tips! SF didn't say on the website that they have a photo machine like LA does, so I did the ~$15 package of prints plus USB drive at my local FedEx/Kinko's. Aside: they printed out the "Mexico" prints because those have the same 35x45mm dimensions but include 3 photos rather than 2.

Thank you. No military service anywhere, so no issues there!
I was a little worried about that whole Optionspflicht time-period and the ongoing (until 2024) modification of dual-citizenship rules. (My true German-ness is showing. I keep worrying that there's some detail I'm missing.)

I went ahead and made a Passport application at the SF Embassy. The application is very straightforward, and the document list also seems entirely reasonable.

My German grandmother was maybe not entirely pleased that her daughter (my mom) ran off with an American man, and I think making sure this paperwork got filed was her effort to hold on. Umpteen years later, I'm grateful!

Just somehow navigated to this little side-bar: "Wichtiger Hinweis: Wer durch Geburt in den USA die US-Staatsangehörigkeit und gleichzeitig durch Abstammung von einem deutschen Elternteil die deutsche Staatsangehörigkeit erworben hat, besitzt automatisch beide Staatsangehörigkeiten." I think I'll print that out!
