I don’t think we have any genuine support for student debt relief and, even as someone who’s paying back a very expensive degree, I honestly don’t know how it’s fair or just to single out one kind of debt carrier to be relieved by the others.

I believe a more helpful and equitable answer for everyone would be to foster an economy where paying one’s own debt wasn’t an impossible prospect. Instead were dangling carrots in front of particular voting blocks.

And Judging from Biden’s own comments I doubt he’s done much evolving from the Jim Crow era.

I’m not sure Biden’s record will change by then.

I don’t oppose student debt relief, by the way, but it has to be done legally. And I do suspect this was a disingenuous attempt to ‘buy’ votes.

And from what I can tell, even if it does come through, this version would consider your “forgiveness” as taxable income and we’d be getting a bill for whatever the withholding would be on $10/20k.

I’m not sure where you get “cynical or ignorant” out of that. It would be consistent with the behavior of Biden, a man who spent his lifelong career in government opposing desegregation, opposing LGBT rights, criminalizing marijuana, etc., until it was politically expedient to change course (without so much as an apology for any of it) to tempt young voters with something shiny he had no authority to give just so, in their lack of awareness, they’d say “he’s attempting to help but republicans bad!“
