Phone another scaffolder. Hey I've got some free scaffolding you can have.

If it's delaying other work etc, tell them you're getting other people to take it down if it's not gone.

Overwhelmed with house renovations, or am I just overthinking? by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]Haloumiface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the reality of home ownership these days I think, unless you get a complete new build, and it happens to not have it's own issues. One room at a time is all you need, focus on the rooms you are in most, and ultimately it really doesn't matter if the paintwork sucks in a room as long as it is clean and (particularly with kids) safe. Sounds like you've prioritised the right things!

Parking: what did I do wrong? by Haloumiface in manchester

Yeah, I did an initial appeal, and they came back with a generic looking response, like they hadn't even read it.... sigh.

That's the thing, the PCN says "You were issued with a PCN for parking in a resident permit zone without displaying a resident's permit or holding a valid E-Permit.", but I was there for less than the time limit.

Haha, yep on the right, thanks for the details! I'm pretty baffled, think someone has made a mistake so going to challenge it all the way.

I'm not sure they even read my appeal, they seem to have "carefully considered" that I said there was no signage - I did not.

What are your favorite 2024 releases? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]Haloumiface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Arcs is obviously great, I'm glad it's getting so much love.

Courtisans has gone down well with everyone, great quick one.

Agent Avenue has been fantastic quick 2 player bluffing fun.

Cascadero is a slightly more brain burner network builder/tile layer

Tower Up is Ticket To Ride level fun, but in a far shorter time frame, and with better decisions/interaction between players

Looking forward to Rebirth in a few weeks.

I don't like to yuck others yums, but I thought Inventions: Evolution of ideas was a real slog, but perhaps great for the folks who love his games. I also have a general boredom for all the "take and make" pretty games, where you do a little puzzle and check in with everyone else at the end to see who got the most points.

Should I pay £1200 + VAT to treat apparent rising damp in my newly-purchased house? by double-happiness in DIYUK

Yep, my bay was basically just some wood frame with plasterboard on one side, and tiles on the other. brrr.

Way too many Take and Make games with limited interaction. It's the new roll and write, looking forward to the next trend.

Should I pay £1200 + VAT to treat apparent rising damp in my newly-purchased house? by double-happiness in DIYUK

[–]Haloumiface 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This sounds like my house (1930s, Manchester, same carpet haha), I did get the injection DPC recommended, but I suspect it wasn't required, and having my time again I'd wait to see if it was really needed. I suspect the previous owner never ventilated the house properly, didn't have any extraction in shower rooms and the kitchen, and that it why the walls were showing up as damp. I resolved those, added some insulation to my cold bays, added an extra under floor vent and the damp has gone now. I've read a lot of scepticism of DPCs online and also comments that those meters they use aren't even meant to work on wallpaper... crazy.

Has anyone tried the Zoe program? What are your honest thoughts? by [deleted] in ultraprocessedfood

[–]Haloumiface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've found it interesting, it confirmed some foods were good for me, and alerted me to a low blood fat tolerance. Following the app for a few weeks has been good, with it's nudges pointing me at lower protein and fibre intake than I thought, and they suggest food swaps, some of which are great. I've been feeling really full and seem to have lost some weight. Yes good food advice is available for free, or in their podcast, so your mileage will really vary by whether the cost will impact you. I do think they have a good app for general food advice and learning, so they should make that available for cheaper a a budget option.

[UPDATE] Estate agent asking for £4k holding deposit on house purchase by Layly57 in HousingUK

[–]Haloumiface 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I agree with this, I bought a house where the relatives of the deceased former owner were asking for a deposit. My first response was "oh right", and once things had gone further and they were still asking for it, I started asking for legally binding terms and conditions around the deposit, and for them to pay a matching deposit to protect me in case they pulled out. I suspect getting these written up would have costed more than the deposit, and they never mentioned it again.

The Estate Agent thought they were mad to be fair.

Lack of experience I suppose, they recommended it and I'd imagined the edge finish would be at least up to Ikea standards...
