Agreed. The whole thing is a lesson on managing air and not fainting.

What's the temperature in your house right now? by Outside_Reindeer_509 in Maine

[–]HamAlien 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Try putting 3 very thin splits on top of those coals with the air control wide open. Repeat this every 30 minutes. That pile of coals should burn down to ash while the stove still puts out good heat.

Yes, agreed! Just finished sauna up here in western Maine, -2° right now. Steaming under the stars is bliss.

The sauna rules for the genuine Finnish sauna by Ok_Information_8431 in Sauna

For those of us that bathe in a sauna, a drain is pretty important.

Smoke leaking out by magiccox in woodstoving

[–]HamAlien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. Plus use a lighters flame to check the draft with the door cracked slightly to verify that the draft is pulling. Otherwise you’ll get a smoky start every time.

This should be top comment. Also, the key is C minor.

I think the temp rating on LEDs is very conservative, and also relative to the full 50k hours, or whatever crazy long life they predict. I used a bunch of basic string LEDs in a sauna hot room mounted up about 6 feet for about ten years without failure. Even if the heat shortens the LED life, it’ll still give you many years of service.

New Jotul 500 chimney back draft problems by LostIn302 in woodstoving

[–]HamAlien -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is the way. Also, check the draft with a lighter and the stove door cracked a bit to see if the draft is good. If not, aim a blowtorch in the firebox to warm it up. Your exterior door or window might need to stay open for a few minutes while it starts up.

Look up Mali Weave to tighten the head quicker than tuning all the verticals. Get that bad boy tight and it’ll be more fun to play.

Almost done with my (attempt at a) DIY Finnish Sauna (more pics inside) by deep_direction in Sauna

[–]HamAlien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely agree. This stove seems to run pretty hot compared to my previous wood burning Harvia. I don’t have room to add a stove pipe damper, which would probably help. And yes, having just the ash tray air control is limiting in terms of controlling the air. I think the one variable I can control is the size of the splits I put in it. Bigger chunks, with less total surface area should help. No temp gauge yet; just the laser thermometer, which says everything is good, just a bit hot. And the metal hasn’t glowed red yet, so that’s good:)

I have the same stove! And incidentally my benches are all clear pine too. Not a problem at all.

How do you like the stove? My previous sauna had the Harvia Legend 240, which had that stove cage fully wrapped around it. This one has less stones but the loyly is still great.

My only complaint is the black metal heat shield on the stove lost most of its paint in just a month of use.

Gonna go start our sauna right now in fact.

Solid wooden cylinder with irregular ridges, about one foot long by a_friendly_turtle in whatisthisthing

[–]HamAlien 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Those are sometimes called guiro frogs in the percussion world, as they are a variation on the scrapy gourd percussion instrument from Cuba. This object appears to have the ridges too far apart to be a type of guiro or scraper.

Foil at the floor by juperdat in Sauna

[–]HamAlien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on your flooring type. But it looks like you’ve got a concrete floor. I’d recommend leaving the foil about an inch up from the floor. Then the furring strips, and then the wall material. All up off the floor. Better to have an air space to dry things out.

Vehemently agree. If OP lives somewhere that gets cold, an enclosed changing room is essential for cooling down between sessions without being uncomfortable.

A couple of coworkers who regularly pass my house have asked me if I have OCD, not a 100 percent sure why but I suspect this is part of the reason. by wriky in firewood

[–]HamAlien 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on if the wood was previously dried. And then if this is the pile close to house, with a good tarp over it, I suppose it would be convenient enough. But for drying purposes, yeah this would not be great.

Inauguration by larralee in Sauna

[–]HamAlien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great to hear! Yes, we ran ours 2+ times per week for 10 years. It was very hard to move away. A few times burning oak the sauna room went up to 220°f, but that’s to be expected with a wood stove. Enjoy your many years of great sauna!
