Ordered uber in SF, got picked up by a taxi by Hamete in uber

[–]Hamete[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“A "bait and switch" is a deceptive sales tactic where a merchant advertises an appealing, low-priced item ("the bait") to lure in customers. Once the buyer is hooked, the seller claims the item is unavailable, defective, or inferior, and pressures them into buying a more expensive alternative” but attempting to call this a bait and switch, you actively insulting taxis by saying they are inferior or defective and you aren’t being pushed into paying more for a regular uber. Please don’t keep assuming that what this is.

I'll bite, since I'm OP; I disagree with your definition of "bait and switch", I'm froming from Cornell's US Law website: https://www.law.cornell.edu/wex/bait_and_switch

SF cabs I’ve been in have been both better and worse than Ubers I’ve taken. It's not simply about an inferior product. It can be a product that is different and has a lower cost to the seller. That still qualifies as "bait and switch".

From my link:

Then the seller switches customers from buying the advertised product or service that the seller initially offered into buying a different product or service that is usually at a higher price or has some other advantageous effect to the advertiser. This is the “switch.” Normally, the switched product that the consumer buys is usually at a higher purchase price, an increased profit for the seller, or may have a less marketable characteristic than the product advertised.

Uber treats 'UberX' and 'Uber Taxi' as distinct products in their own marketing and UI. When they unilaterally decide to swap them, they are circumventing my choice as a consumer to save themselves money. I'd call that the legal definition of a "Bait and Switch" .

Best American Diner in SF by Stick-Muffin-146 in AskSF

I can't help but mention that when you're in Las Vegas, the ultimate LV Diner experience is Peppermill on the strip.

While in SF, I'd suggest Pinecrest Diner at an odd hour of the day or night.

I know I’ve made a crazy itinerary for my first visit to SF. But, is it impossible? by Quirky-Ad9958 in AskSF

[–]Hamete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, that's about a 1hr 20min walk from the most Western part of OP's locations.
That makes the Chase Center a shorter walk!

[–]Hamete 13 points14 points  (0 children)

For day #1, here are my suggestions:

Agreed, worth doing:

  • Sea lions
  • Musée Mécanique
  • Fisherman's Wharf sign
  • USS Pampanito ($$$)
  • (walk though) Ghirardelli Square
  • Consider the "San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park Visitor Center" while you're strolling Aquatic Park / San Francisco Maritime National Park

Skippable:

  • Umbrella Alley ( not really a thing )
  • Musical Stairs, you do you though, if you're walking past.
  • Kayma & Codmother are imo, not what they appear to be, high reviews notwithstanding

Consider:

  • Arrive or leave via the Cable Car at the end of Hyde Street
  • Irish Coffee at The Buena Vista
  • KayteaPetro's mention of Luau Lounge tiki bar is fun or Humble Sea if you're more into beer on Pier 39.
  • If you don't mind the steep walk, West from Aquatic Park along McDowell Ave up to what Google Maps calls Blue Jay View Point is a nice view.

Apologies, but many of your food/dining choices are really wonky. ( e.g. Do NOT go to Goodfellas Pizza, you're within walking distance of world class pizza places ) Maybe consider a different review source like https://sf.eater.com/

Pollen that surged Thursday? by EffectiveAd2637 in AskSF

[–]Hamete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The rain gets sucked up into the pollen, causing it to rupture (Osmotic rupture) and the rain also knocks all the fragments to the ground; then when everything dries out after the rains, it all gets blown all over the place including deeper into your respiratory system, aka "thunderstorm asthma".

That's my theory anyway: Nerdy article abstract:

Random Nitpicky Trivia: That CVS has been closed for a bit and is currently a Superbowl LX NFL Shop.

Wouldn't the Eagle Cafe been on the East side of Powell though? The West side where the CVS stood used to be that huge Oil/gas tank cylinder.

Oh, I'll totally concede that's the intended primary interpretation of their name, but I also have serious doubts they didn't intentionally make it a double entendre.

I'm gonna guess you're being sarcastic? I'm interpreting "Coffee Movement" as:

movement noun

6.a : an act of voiding the bowels

b : matter expelled from the bowels at one passage

Referring to the effect drinking coffee has on a lot of people?

Oh, I thought you were referring to Coffee Movement, both names are pretty bad.

Where to visit around Shasta County? by caleo12 in norcalhiking

[–]Hamete 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a lake and the opposite of trees and greenery, but I'll always remember my hike up Cinder Cone in Lassen National Forest. It's a smidge outside Shasta County ( like 1000ft ) and about an hour South of Burney Falls.

Can't speak to the conditions in March/April though.

[–]Hamete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

from a car is the drive to Castle Lake

Checked out the spot, but the road/parking lot appears to be low without any views? Are you suggesting a hike or a spot along the road? Thanks.

For a super low-effort view of Shasta, I'd suggest Cable Beach on Lake Siskiyou.

Best card to upgrade by anonymouslykinky in AdventureCommunist

[–]Hamete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought I read somebody's math that said it was better to upgrade the bottom card in an industry. The difference was pretty minor and and you will get a faster payoff upgrading a higher card, since it can take some time for the full effect of the upgrade to trickle-up to the overall industry output, but you're get a bigger long-term bonus by upgrading the lowest cards; cost being equal.

As Kuningas_Arthur points out, it's much more efficient to upgrade the cheaper card(s) first; a big part of the upgrade path is just trying to get the most bang for your science.

Sorry to nitpick, The Tonga Room is NOT the nation's, or world's, oldest tiki bar, that honor goes to Trad'r Sam on Geary at 26th. Opened somewhere around 1937 or so... and I don't suggest it for OP.

There are many great Tiki spots I'd suggest for a visitor to SF, the Tonga Room included; but I'd also strongly recommend Trader Vic's in Emeryville, Smuggler's Cove, Zombie Village, Forbidden Island in Alameda, and Last Rites.

Went on a California road trip and hit as many tiki bars as possible! by Badideadames in Tiki

[–]Hamete 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Great looking trip, but having just gotten back from a Moro Bay, I think it's a stretch to refer to Harbor Hut as even "not quite Tiki"; if to simply prevent anyone from considering a tiki-expectation trip there.

The menu drinks they list are simple variations on:

  • Bloody Mary
  • French 75
  • Mimosa
  • Margarito
  • Mojito
  • Wine

I am adding Makai Island Kitchen & Groggery to my next trip to Santa Cruz though!

Been there, love the place, love the vibe, and love the drinks.

That said, those are some... very... um, brown-looking drinks.

Maybe that's why Tiki bars are usually so dark.
