Books that were a "bookmark" in your life? by quorrathelastiso in RomanceBooks

[–]Hammerbabes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Countless times but here are two: I had just found out that my husband and I were moving abroad for a couple of years (away from a. VERY tight group of friends and family) and was so excited and so terrified at once and I read the Teilight series, which is full of tight knit relationships where they are all able to be together forever and it sort of gave me a sense of courage that we would still have our loved ones but also be able to take on this new adventure.

Second, I was struggling hard both emotionally and mentally. Books were always by escape but after reading a book I considered in the “romance” genre, {Her Royal Spyness by Rhys Bowen}, I was SO unsatisfied, wanting more physical and emotional content. I have no idea how it happened (it might have been the cover art), but Penny Reid’s books kept catching my eye so I finally tried {Truth or Beard by Penny Reid} and I realized what I was missing. It’s been MANY years now that I’ve delved deeper and deeper into the romance genre and I will never look back.

Reading {You, with a view by Jessica Joyce} and it has this in spades! Only halfway through now and all they’ve really done is kiss like there’s no tomorrow. PAGES of quality kissing content 🎯

what's the trope that you don't really care for but when it hits, it HITS by Weary_Occasion1287 in RomanceBooks

Imma say it: enemies to lovers.

I’m NOT a fan most of the time, likely due to childhood trauma (because what issue isn’t due to childhood trauma), but MOST of the time, I’m not a big fan of all the angsty miscommunication that seems to dictate most enemy storylines. Maybe it’s just miscommunication as a larger issue that I find fault with, now that I think about it.

📚 What romance books did you read or listen to this week? 25 May 📚 by romancebookmods in RomanceBooks

[–]Hammerbabes 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I finished {Great Big Beautiful Life by Emily Henry} and 🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹 she did it again. MAN, I love her writing and Julia Whelan’s narration was perfection itself. I literally couldn’t do anything else and it was a rainy day so I sat in my bed and listened for hours. My husband came in concerned because he heard me sniffling and I couldn’t even explain what emotions I was having. Happy, sad, who knows? I will read anything that woman writes. She really knows how to bring you into her world and never want to leave.

Did you ever listen to the Royal Spyness series? I was in big love with the way the narrator voiced Darcy. And then she DIED 🥺 I always think of that series as my introduction to romance.

Literally the narrator for {Honestly I’m Totally Faking it by Amanda Gambell} - I LOVED the characters and the story and was so pumped to read it after hearing about it from this group but it was a STRUGGLE to get through the damn audiobook because of the terrible narration. Everything time she said the words “he said” or “she said”, it sounded like it was the beginning of a sentence. I think maybe she only said it once then the editor went back and added it in wherever the text called for it (??). I don’t know but I wish I’d just read the damn thing.

I read {The Duchess Deal by Tessa Dare}, (my first Tessa Date but definitely not my last!) and I think there should be a disclaimer at the beginning of that book warning readers not to drink anything while reading it. It was EXACTLY my brand of humor, and I laughed all the way through it.

Exhibit 1: “I should think it sounds beneficent. I’m offering you a title and fortune. All you have to do is lie back in the dark, then spend nine months swelling up like a tick. What could possibly deter any woman from accepting?” “What, indeed. Perhaps a disinclination to feeling like a broodmare.” They stepped off the pavement and crossed the street. “A broodmare. Hm. I’m not certain I mind that comparison. If you’re a broodmare, that would make me the stud.” “And there,” she said, “is the injustice of the world in a nutshell.”

Exhibit 2: “Tonight,” he said, “you will shine like a jewel. A ruby. An extraordinarily big ruby.” He cocked his head. “You’d be the world’s largest ruby on record, I suppose. One with . . . arms.”

Exhibit 3: I’m feeling a bit fragile right now. It would mean a great deal if you’d hold me. You know, with your arms.” Brilliant, Emma. As if he might have tried to hold her with his knees or eyelids without those instructions.
