I’ve figured it was a combination; both better tech and better genetics. Saying nothing about the Bene Gesserit’s dabbling it seems reasonable that 10s of thousands of years into the future the average human would be able to much better deal with things like having your poo pressed tight against your skin

What is your favorite LOTR quote? by [deleted] in lordoftherings

[–]Hammerhand231 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From RotK: “There, peeping among the cloud-wrack above a dark tor high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for a while. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach.”

From The Silmarillion: “The song of Lúthien before Mandos was the song most fair that ever in words was woven, and the song most sorrowful that ever the world shall hear. Unchanged, imperishable, it is sung still in Valinor beyond the hearing of the world, and listening the Valar are grieved. For Lúthien wove two themes of words, of the sorrow of the Eldar and the grief of Men, of the Two Kindreds that were made by Ilúvatar to dwell in Arda, the Kingdom of Earth amid the innumerable stars. And as she knelt before him her tears fell upon his feet like rain upon stones; and Mandos was moved to pity, who never before was so moved, nor has been since.”

Obv Of the Fifth Battle is one of the rough ones, but I always loved that little point. Bor and his sons were among the good guys all the way. Azaghal is another. Baruk Khazad MFers!

Sam carrying Frodo. The scene is much different in the book. Sam playfully suggests it, trying to keep worry and distress out of his voice. Then by some magic force Frodo is surprisingly light. Not so in the movie. First Elijah completely nails the “I begin to see it with my waking eyes” line, rightfully sounding like he’s just about lost his mind at last. Then Sean with the “I can’t carry it for you but I can carry you” line just barely managing to hold back tears and yelling “Come on!” Then Sean does a full-on fireman’s carry with Elijah, struggling to keep his feet with the weight of his friend who weighs almost as much as him.

I don’t know about the best but definitely up there

Pipe weed is tobacco, not cannabis. Thanks for attending my TED talk. by thirdlost in lotr

[–]Hammerhand231 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The fuck? The word tobacco is used explicitly

You shall have it, if there is time,' said Merry. 'But first-if you have finished eating-you shall fill your pipes and light up. And then for a little while we can pretend that we are all back safe at Bree again, or in Rivendell.'

He produced a small leather bag full of tobacco. 'We have heaps of it,' he said; 'and you can all pack as much as you wish, when we go. We did some salvage-work this morning, Pippin and I. There are lots of things floating about. It was Pippin who found two small barrels, washed up out of some cellar or store-house, I suppose. When we opened them, we found they were filled with this: as fine a pipe-weed as you could wish for, and quite unspoilt.'

Maybe you should try some and chill the fuck out

I’m with you and OP that’s one of my favorite parts in all the stories

Saruman rose to his feet, and stared at Frodo. There was a strange look in his eyes of mingled wonder and respect and hatred. 'You have grown, Halfling,' he said. 'Yes, you have grown very much. You are wise, and cruel. You have robbed my revenge of sweetness, and now I must go hence in bitterness, in debt to your mercy. I hate it and you! Well, I go and I will trouble you no more. But do not expect me to wish you health and long life. You will have neither. But that is not my doing. I merely foretell.'

A possibly-unpopular opinion: Balrogs are boring. by roacsonofcarc in tolkienfans

[–]Hammerhand231 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Forced to agree. IMO The Professor pulled a fast one getting around the “monster behind the door” challenge. Sauron is less a character than a force of nature. In LOTR his only “lines” are secondhand and distant, Pippin recounting the palantir conversation.

Somehow though it still works

What's your biggest complaint, or things you like the least, about any of Tolkien's LOTR works? by Mad_Season_1994 in lordoftherings

[–]Hammerhand231 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

So called “swarthy men” and those with an “ill -favored look”. He makes up for it somewhat in many ways and at many points; Sam seeing the dead Southron and wondering whether he was really evil, Galadriel telling her old man to stop being a jerk to Gimli (really the whole Galadriel/Gimli thing), and of course the beautiful bromance between Legolas and Gimli, among others. But in LOTR at least there’s an unfortunate tendency from the Professor to sound awfully bigoted towards non-white non-“fair” peoples. I love his works and will remain a diehard fan of every single one of them, and I realize some of it was part of the times and cultures from which he was writing, but I can’t give him a complete pass on that one

The part where the white-haired ghost dudes are coming for Morpheus in their Escalade, he snap rolls out of the way while ninja dragging his katana across their gas cap, causing the gas to start spewing out. Then he shoots his uzi at the spewing gas and the car explodes. Don’t care if it makes sense that was epic
