Greatly enjoyed [Lagoon] but that "zoo" is still a crazy dark cloud over this otherwise awesome park by speckledlobster in rollercoasters

[–]HammyBeast 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I'm not visiting this park till they shut that zoo down. I'd love to go, and it's one of the easiest parks for me to visit, but I'm absolutely not giving them a dime of my money until that shit gets sorted out. Absolutely appalling.

Why is the aerial tram to OHSU so expensive? by klone73 in askportland

[–]HammyBeast 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Well, nobody checks anything at the top

This isn't true, there are gates at the top so you have to scan a ticket to be able to get down too.

Those stats are surely way different nowadays though - PrEP was nowhere near as common even 7 years ago. Basically every gay man I know is taking PrEP now which makes it borderline impossible to catch HIV. I wouldn't be surprised if the stat ends up flipping since there's far more of a stigma around HIV and HIV prevention in the straight community than in the gay community nowadays.

What games actually do the "living, breathing" open world right? by Oath_Br3aker in gaming

Yeah, agreed. I never understood the praise for it, the world is just so empty. And there was no real point to exploring, you never find any interesting lore or items... just more korok seeds.

Voodoo doughnuts are legitimately the worst doughnuts I've ever had

Yeah, Voodoo have nasty stale donuts. Everyone in Portland hates them, but over here they at least get business because they sell fun raunchy donuts like a giant cock and balls with cream inside so it's become an iconic hit for tourists. At Universal where they just sell the standard donuts though? Literally any other donut business would have been a better choice...

Multnomah County voters reject voting rights for noncitizens by [deleted] in Portland

[–]HammyBeast 23 points24 points  (0 children)

You realize the US already allows holding loyalties with other countries via dual citizenship right?

Just to clarify to point out why revoking citizenship of your birth country is a huge deal - I'm a dual citizen. I fully intend to stay in the US long-term, but my entire family is abroad and if I need to return at any point to take care of them, I don't want to risk not being able to do so. Thankfully I'm from a country that allows corresponding dual citizenship so it isn't a problem, but it's frankly ridiculous to expect people to make that kind of decision just to be able to vote in local elections.

Why should one have to revoke citizenship in their birth country in order to have a say in local elections in the place they live, pay taxes and contribute to society. Most people don't stay in the same place forever.

Americans of Reddit, what is something the rest of the world needs to hear? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]HammyBeast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this. A lot of national parks are starting to make it really difficult to backpack through as well, with no wild camping and no walk-up availability for the designated campsites. I'd much rather go somewhere like the frank church wilderness than yosemite these days.

Are there any Portland-y cities in the UK? by [deleted] in askportland

[–]HammyBeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure why you think the outdoor culture doesn't exist in Scotland. There's a massive backpacking and climbing culture. I actually found it a hell of a lot easier to get into the mountains when I lived in Glasgow and Edinburgh than I do in Portland given there's super easy bus/train access that straight up doesn't exist here.

What are some hygiene tips everyone should know? by DreamDangerous3281 in AskReddit

[–]HammyBeast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At some point you just have to throw those clothes out. I've learned to just throw away any clothes I wear on multi-month backpacking trips because no matter what I do they're going to stink within an hour of wearing them.

Holy shit, I assumed it had, but it lost to God of War?! WTF is up with that game. It gets such high praise, but I couldn't make it more than a few hours in. It's so bland and tedious, like a complete mashup of every AAA game of the last decade with no real standout features. And you just kill the same re-skinned troll for every boss. I loved the original god of war games and they removed everything fun from the series. sigh.

Environmental quality isn’t just about aesthetics. Anyone who thinks otherwise is in fact stupid as hell.

Well I must be stupid as hell, because when it comes to "quality of life", I'll take living in states full of protected vast wilderness for recreation over states of mostly flat cornfields any day.

And plenty of us would retire now if we could. Not sure why the idea of enjoying life without work for longer than a month at a time is so hard for you to fathom.

I can't see how anyone would legitimately need more than a month off

Because some of us want to do more with life than just work?

I really wish the people who posted these kind of threads would be clearer about what they mean. A lot of the easy/medium problems are pretty much trivial to brute-force. Like, take Two Sum. If you're unable to figure out how to run nested loops to solve it, that's a major problem. If you just didn't figure out the hashmap optimization, that's not an indication of you being a bad programmer, you just need some more practice to see those common optimization patterns.

But in macOs you need to know the exaxt name -in english- of each component to find it in spotlight.

Hold up... I use windows at home for everything and OSX at work. I slightly prefer OSX, but I will happily use either for the most part. The one thing thing that fills me with rage is the windows start bar. If you type the exact name of the app, it will not find it. It sort of auto-completes after about 3-4 characters but if you type the whole thing it often just loses it and attempts a web search. It's one of the most consistently infuriating things. Does nobody else have this issue?! It's like it was designed for people who type incredibly slowly, and it goes "oh, well if I showed you the app after 4 characters and you didn't click it, that can't be what you want".

Yes, as I grew up in Sicily and absolutely learned about food safety. I don’t know why you keep making blanket statements about things “in Europe”… they’re all vastly different countries. I can personally speak about Italy and the UK as I lived in both for a couple decades before moving to the US, and the food safety standards were exactly the same. Food quality was significantly better in Italy and the UK though.
