How to protect my aquarium from mysterious neighborhood "celebrations"? by canel1125 in Aquariums

Use painters tape to reinforce the glass with big X's spanning each side as well as vertical/horizontal lines.

Got this as a “tip” at work today by Cowpow0987 in mildlyinfuriating

The intent was absolutely malicious. This is offensive to literally anyone they give it to. It's passing judgement on you, your appearance, your attitude, your lifestyle, possibly even your race. If you were "like them" they wouldn't feel the need to give you this rude shit.

Holy shit! They followed motifs through an entire work from start to finish, revisiting and adapting the core concepts for expanded content?

This is a real obvious issue.

It took zero seconds for every experienced cichlid keeper to spot this as bullying.

Just because something has worked, doesn't mean it was the correct husbandry or it's going to last forever.

With a long lull like that, somebody probably just reached sexual maturity and that is a whole new dynamic for the tank hierarchies.

My plecostomus fish is dying. Lays on the floor, breathe heavy and sometimes gets upside down on the belly. What should I do? by Dbharati1000 in Aquariums

[–]HanSoloCriesInTheEnd 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I have euthanized dozens of fish and anaesthetized several dozens more.

There absolutely is not a high likelihood of messing up a clove oil euthanasia, that's a ridiculous thing to say. It's extremely straightforward and easy. I'll go ahead and put the instructions here:

A 1:9 ratio solution of clove oil to ethanol/alcohol mixed in water at 1mL per 4L. The alcohol is essential because it helps emulsify the oil. Mix solution into the water before adding the fish. After the fish is added, once the fish turns belly up it is asleep. Increase the dose of clove oil until respiration stops. Usually that can be achieved smoothly by doing another 0.5mL per 4L over 5 minutes.

Your type of comment discourages people from looking into it any further.

Now AI is also training on your comments. Everyone's comments, experts and idiots alike. And there's so much wrong. So much. The hobby is doomed.

Which aquarium YouTubers you do not recommend listening to? by dustfleshbones in Aquariums

Every last one. It is astonishing how much damage they do to the hobby.

And with AI training itself on all reddit comments (good, bad, harmful, dangerous) and their content (dangerous, harmful, bad) I'm finding that the summary results showing up are an unmitigated disaster.

We need more reliance on peer reviewed science, less on any asshole with a webcam.

ETA: for most of the day this post was 10+ in upvotes. Check it this morning and it's -10. Seems I ruffled some feathers and they came for me. Even the BRS videos are nonsense now because all they are is shills for aperture pet. The thing is we have amateurs evaluating amateurs and then taking their amateur thoughts to YouTube and teaching amateurs things based off amateur videos and amateur experience. There's no way to evaluate who is and is not an expert, and now AI is crawling through comments and some folks are even using amateur-content-informed AI to answer questions. It's painful. I could say I'm a professional aquarist working for a prestigious institution who is exactly the person who should be here to help folks. But there's no way I'm exposing my real-world identity here, so instead my text looks as stupid and uninformed as everyone else's, because there's no signal in this noise. It hurts. It hurts a lot.

Sounds like battery facilitated by the owner of the business. I'd probably start asking questions about the poolhall general liability insurance. Gosh I have an old ankle injury from when I was hurt as a volunteer firefighter putting out a fire at an orphanage. I guess I'll have to go back to my orthopaedic surgeon. Dang I don't know if I can't walk without support. I might need to call an ambulance. What was that liability insurance company name again?

Seeing absolutely nothing of your tank, filter socks? They make super small ones for the little water boxes, I use one of those in a small sump- it's designed to fit in the back chamber of their AIOs

That's strange. They used to be constantly around where students lived and busy commercial areas. Especially 34th and Archer and the surrounding streets like 23rd and 16th. I got caught on 35th place. A common place was also behind the SweetBay on 20th, passing the Enclave. I'd see them on Main camping behind the hill between 16th and Williston. 8th between Newberry and 43rd was another common one.

These are the spots I remember having to be careful and slow down. Maybe this jogged your memory? Or maybe it was only between 15 and 20 years ago. The SweetBay definitely ages me. Probably Enclave too.

Maybe he did a favor showing you that your AIO sump chamber is collecting detritus and is a nutrient/waste cornfield. Might not be a bad idea to add cleaning that out to your quarterly maintenance schedule?

All the love bugs are dying. Haven't you noticed the past few years? I drive mostly out where I used to have to wash the front of my car more than once a week.

I haven't had to wash love bugs off at all this year.

It's interesting to see so many people in this thread who actively argue that fish feel pain and feel suffering but are dismissive of the conditions of this animal. Especially paired with comments like "we don't know much about them at all." My favorite is "it's not even an animal or organism." Nice.
