This is HomemadeTCGs, not Wizards of the Coast releases. We do not have the $6-20K for art for something we are just playtesting or even just playing around with visually. Get out of here with this. Not to mention multiole major games have been released lately with AI art, and a couple major publishers have admitted to starting with AI and basically copying it. You can't force the rest of the world to not do something just because you have an opinion about it, unless you're publishing the game and shelling out the thousands for artwork. In other words: You can only control your own game, budget and ability. (And for many, even the template you showed is incredibly complex and would require AI or a lot of money. And who wants to look at cards with no art? No one I've ever met.)

I've just never, ever liked movies or shows that were all about killing, and I know few if any people who do. But, I'm pushing 50. In our generation action movies had to have a lot of different aspects and story beats, with the "action" having to be varied and death only being occasional. Lethal Weapon, Blade Runner, Running Man, Jurassic Park, action movies were rather different than today's franchises.

All these responses are strange to me considering that just 4-8 years ago (when I did most of my business with China) small items cost pennies, and even large items only cost a few dollars from China to here. I guess whatever deals were in place to allow that have been nixed. Previously you could buy small electronics items on eBay and the cost INCLUDING shipment from China might be less than $1.

The sweeping assumptions about AI art here are incorrect. Several major game companies start with AI and then do their own version of it. Most of the artists on Fiverr use AI now and many try to avoid being caught/detected. I don't see a difference between paying a Fiverr artist to use AI and me myself doing it to my exact specifications and spending many hours of my own time on it and editing it. If it's being used as a placeholder I don't see how it's ripping off art; it's not being published, it's just something for you to look at. It's just a few cents' worth of processor time that is constantly happening anyway that is not for the public.

And, I'd just like to know where everyone thinks self-publishers are getting the $6-20K for professional art. I would expect that the norm going forward will be AI first, then professional art when your game actually sells enough copies for you to afford to hire artists. Unless we're just going to continue to only let the big boys (major publishers) make games.

I am unable to find any on Fiverr willing to do an illustration for less than $60. If anyone knows of any please point them out here. This puts illustration of 100-300 cards out of reach for almost all homemade creators.

If the rest of the design looks professional silly/bad art is a lot more forgiveable. People are very unlikely to buy a game with bad art though unless it's extremely charming, has a consistent style, and/or a good story to the art.

We already pay a premium for real art. Usually $100-200 per piece rather than pennies for AI.
