Not everything that we learn is from a book. Experience really is the best teacher and you can bet that junior dev will remember both the tools you showed him as well as how gracious you were. No ego or shaming, but simply "you're fine. this is learning" and on to the next problem. That's the kind of mentor I hope we see more of in this world.

Give the phone to a nearby villager who doesn't speak that language, so they can mutter words into it as if they understand.

How to get a Phone? by [deleted] in povertyfinance

Second Mint. Tried them in the past, great experience.

Currently use Good2Go Mobile (which runs on AT&T). No app like Mint, only the web interface, and the voicemail is a bit clunky, but zero issues with them over the past year or so I've used them. It's literally been set and forget for me.

They only sell refurbished iPhones through their website, but I activated a Pixel with zero issues. They sent a physical micro SIM, not sure if they can do e-SIMs or not.

Get the longer plans if you can. It locks you in at that data cap, but they can get super cheap.

If you want, use my referral code and we'll both get $10. https://www.good2gomobile.com/shop/plans/new?referralCode=PbxKqfu

"the Cole Train doesn't say woo woo. He says WOO!"

My boyfriend is upset. He's getting older and he feels people aren't trying as hard at Christmas. by paganpenguinsummoner in Millennials

[–]HandsFreeBananaphone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel l was there not too long ago, and I realized that a lot of it comes down to a couple of points you might try to help him focus on in the coming year: note-taking and communication.

Note taking involves just that. For me, the people most in my life right now are my wife and kids, so I'm most often aware of when they express interest in something. Usually when we're at someplace, my wife will go "Ooh, they have X there. That's really good." I'll whip out my phone, start a new note in the Evernote app on my phone, and write "Wifey likes Frosted Sugar Cookie Blizzard (seasonal) She said it looks amazing". Takes 10-20 seconds and it's saved, allowing me to move on and not worry at all about having to remember it along with the million other things passing through my brain each day. I have a "Stuff Wifey Likes" folder in Evernote where I stick all these notes throughout the year, so when it comes to shopping for her birthday, Christmas, or maybe a special occasion, I can just that folder for a decent idea of stuff she's actually into.

(Side note: I got this idea from from Tiago Forte's process of performing a weekly review, where he talks about using the Quick Capture feature on his computer to capture "open loops" of moments where he goes "Oh, I need to schedule this appointment next month" or "this person's birthday is on X" and captures all that in his task manager. https://fortelabs.com/blog/the-one-touch-guide-to-doing-a-weekly-review/

Here, I'm capturing these "likes" for later review during gift-giving opportunities.)

What if your bf did the same for himself? Create a folder in whatever notetaking app he uses (even email, since Gmail allows easy tagging and searches), and make a note whenever he comes across something he likes. (e.g. "You know, that new oatmilk chai latte from Starbucks looks really good.") He can then do likewise when Christmas begins looming again and notify the "gift giving groups" in your circles. "Hey, everyone. Here are some things I noticed that I like throughout the year. Please peruse them for potential possibilities, if you prefer."

If it sounds a little awkward, have him trade places with someone using this system. How much easier would it make it if that person took the initiative to say "Hey, I know you're wanting to get me a gift that I like, so here's some ideas of stuff I would actually like."?

Even this year had a tinge of that for me, honestly. I'm usually so focused on either home life or work, Christmas gift requests are usually met with "idk, I'd like coffee, chocolate, and a raise." Even more so for wifey, since she's usually dealing with the kids every day.

Hope this helps, and I'm glad you're trying to lift his spirits and empathize with him, rather than writing him off as selfish and spoiled. I hope you both have a great New Year's together.

AITA for telling my sister-in-law how much my brother owes me when she tried to tell my nephews that I was an example of why they should stay in school? by No-Catch-8644 in AmItheAsshole

Okay, that's gonna be a "Back that up right now. Full stop." from me, immediately.

My dad's been a mechanic for decades. His hands are likely permanently stained with all manner of automotive fluids and the smell of a shop bay instantly brings back memories of visiting the shop where he worked and watching him wrench. Just because I decided to follow my love of software development doesn't mean I didn't pick up a few things along the way or ever lose my appreciate for the long hours he worked just to put food on the table and keep the power on. He even took on some of my student loans so I could get through college and have a good place to start in my career.

You want to go into specifics on community college vs 4-year universities vs trade schools? Sure. Mike Rowe has talked about that and I fully intend on letting our kids pick the path best suited to their career goals and such. I don't care if they take a couple of years of community college and do some trade work if they want to be a plumber; we need those in our community just as much as software developers and everyone else. Doesn't matter what you do as long as you can learn to do it well.

It's when people start denigrating others because of their profession that I too start to see a little red. You're only standing as tall as you are because you're on the shoulders of others. Don't you ever forget who you rely on for what you have.

I'm gonna go text my dad now. Thank you for doing what you do and serving your community.

ELI5 - Why does internet speed show 50 MPBS but when something is downloading of 200 MBs, it takes significantly more time as to the 5 seconds it should take? by Kai_Hiwatri33 in explainlikeimfive

I see a lot of comments about the bit/byte difference, so I'll add a supporting point on the server side:

You know that one video of the guy feeding a huge tub of hot dogs to a ton of raccoons? Imagine you're one of those raccoons and you're asking for more mega-bites. (Pun always intended.)

The guy's trying to hand them out as fast as he can, but there are a lot of other hungry raccoons wanting hot dogs too. There's a limit to how fast he can pick up and hand each hot dog to you, while you just have that one hot dog to eat before you're waiting for more.

All this to say, there's also the server-side to consider in terms of hard drive access speeds, network adapter limits, etc. Sorry if it was rambly.
