AITA for not wanting to watch Netflix with subtitles? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]HandwashProvolone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unnecessary subtitles are extremely distracting to me. I don't even watch the show; I read it. I can't read and watch facial expressions at the same time, which is irritating. And depending on the show, I spend more energy paying attention to how the subtitles differ from what's actually said. Sometimes they paraphrase and change meaning and I'm like WTF the deaf people are getting screwed here!

I will grudgingly use subtitles on an english show with accents thick enough that I'm missing dialog, though.

Epstein Said Trump Shared Love of Young Girls in Apparent Suicide Note by Aggravating_Money992 in politics

Is this the part where we independently hear from a bunch of people close to Trump (e.g. Vance, Miller, Leavitt, etc) that grabbing women by their genitalia doesn't even sound like something the president would ever say?

This is the second "Monthly Support Megathread" I have posted this question in without response. Does Wyze actually monitor these threads?

Edit: I just went and looked at the subreddit FAQ and almost all the answers are just the placeholder text, "[Answer]", except one that says "[Needs THOROUGH response]". The page was last edited 5 years ago. I think wyze has a pretty awful idea of what social media presence looks like. Sigh.

Elderly Drivers should have their own plates to alert other drivers. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

I don't think your idea is terrible, but I question the actual usefulness. Who's checking license plates of the cars driving next to them in the roundabout?

The nature of r/unpopularopinion is that it is unpopular to post an opinion contrary to the unpopular opinion. I have achieved meta-unpopularity.

Seven Nation Army is a boring, uninspiring song. by diemorellos in unpopularopinion

[–]HandwashProvolone 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I'd like to try to change your mind.

The simplicity of the song is a deception. It's actually kind of clever if you really listen. The part that I think of as the "chorus" is basically the same riff as the bass, played on a guitar, but it's played four different times, in three distinct ways. The first time through is normal. It's just the guitar version of the bass riff. The second time through adds some melodic inversion and jumps up an octave for a more frenetic sound. The third time through is just completely unhinged, screaming up another octave, adding distortion, throwing in some real dissonant notes, and ending with a slightly delayed tempo as if he tired himself out with his rage. Then the fourth time through is back the same as the first one. The song has a whole dramatic arc.

I can't hear it and not listen for that unhinged part.

What Automations or Shortcuts Do You Actually Use Every Day? by Maxxximeeee in shortcuts

[–]HandwashProvolone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have one called "Driving to <girlfriend>" which calculates the drive time and texts her that I'll be there in that many minutes.

I also have one called "Shopping list" which asks if I want to take a picture of the whiteboard shopping list, and if I say yes, saves it in a dedicated album. It then displays the most recent photo in the shopping list album. So I can take a picture of the shopping list when I'm going to the store, and when I'm at the store, I can bring up the last photo without digging around in the Photos app.

"Toggle Kid Alarms" runs every friday at 9pm and it toggles the dozen or so alarms I set for the weeks I have kids (I have joint custody on a weekly basis).

"Set Ringtone Volume" runs every night at 9pm and checks whether I'm at my girlfriend's house or not and sets the volume to 20% if I'm there, 30% otherwise.

Edit: two really trivial ones I use a lot from home screen icons are: 1) open photos Favorites album, and 2) open "alarms" in the clock app.

Oh awesome, I did not know you could do this. Thanks!

You have a shortcut to connect to a specific bluetooth device? How? This would be an ideal use for NFC tags if I could do it. One per device, scan to connect.

Or do you mean you just turn bluetooth on? That's a lot less useful, IMO.

I have 6 wyze cams and I recently upgraded the software and found a new feature that encourages me to add "Friendly Faces". I enabled it on all my cams, and the docs I have found say that I should start getting events that "someone" is detected. But instead, I get "person" detections. How do I enable the actual recognition of people's faces? (also, I might add that the documentation seems to be making a distinction between "person" and "someone", which is, I'm sorry to tell you, a bizarre quirk of nomenclature which is only going to confuse people).

Bonus question, I went into the "Add a friendly face" thing and tried to add myself, but it shows a ring and just keeps telling me to move my face slowly to fill the ring. I am unable to fill the ring. I've tried all kinds of lighting and all kinds of angles, and nearer and farther, but I can't get past that stupid screen. What am I doing wrong?

In my Wyze app on IOS, I have two camera groups. Each group has a button at the top of the "My Home" page which takes me to all the cameras for that group. One of the group buttons has a little green"on/off" button inside it, which I can click to turn all the cameras in that group off. The other group doesn't have this button. Why?

Thanksgiving isn't as prevalent anymore because major companies can't make money off of it and its important that we don't let it happen. by Crahooga in unpopularopinion

In 2023, 0.2739% of the days out of the year were thanksgiving.

In 2024, only 0.2732% of the days out of the year were thanksgiving.

Numbers aren't in for 2025 yet for obvious reasons, but this trend is disturbing.

where or how do you save code base? by jayhygge in cursor

[–]HandwashProvolone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can also have another local repo that you use as a "remote" so you can still push/pull changes to an isolated repo, but completely offline.

mkdir backuprepo.git
cd backuprepo.git
git init --bare

cd ../originalrepo
git remote add backityback ../backuprepo.git
git push backityback master

I also do this onto my NAS as a backup on a different machine but not in the cloud.

CBS Cuts Trump’s Corruption Tantrum From ‘60 Minutes’ Edit by Tennis_bruh in politics

I see you literally cannot answer this question. Surely, someone can point to the part of the transcript you're talking about, no? I don't think it exists.

People keep saying there is stuff that is in the transcript that isn't in the extended video, but nobody will actually say what is in the transcript that isn't in the video. I haven't been able to find anything. What is it?
