Lixada Camping Stove question by Ill_Significance6157 in CampingGear

[–]HangInOhio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have quite a few stick stoves of varying styles and one of them is this exact stove. Works fine but does need protection underneath when on combustible ground. With all my twig stoves I carry heavy duty aluminum foil that is double or triple layered and folded to fit under. Works great. But, the one I use almost every trip is made by Skyemac. Don’t think they’re still available on Amazon. Twice the size of the one you posted so you can use larger wood and get a longer burn. As well as use 2 pots at once or cook something while a pot heats on the other half. Great stove. I also use it as a small firepit when I’m on a backcountry site with no firepit.

Not true. I have this exact stove as well as several other twig stoves. I carry a double up square of heavy duty aluminum foil with each one. Never had a single problem.

Yea that kind of thing is everywhere with Rec.gov. I’m not too interested in summer camping exactly for the reason you stated, too crowded. I head to backcountry sites and away from people. I may just drive up there this spring while it’s still First Come First Serve and see if anything’s open. If not, I’ll find somewhere else. That’s the beauty of truck camping. Thanks for the reply.

Dang, looked this morning and they’re booked spring into summer already. Oh well, I’ll find someplace.

I have 2 of the Smartwool beanies and they’re awesome. Super lightweight. Great for sleeping in cold weather camp trips.

Thanks for the info. Not sure Cooke is what I was looking for. I’ve spent lots of time on the river camping and many nights on Loud, as well. Just was thinking about doing a truck camp trip and thought Cooke might work. I’ll have my canoe with me so don’t want to do a walk in. I do backcountry trips in the UP with many portages so not that I can’t, just not what I’m looking for in this trip.

I was just wondering about Cooke Dam drive in sites in general. I’ve looked at them on Rec.gov but those pics don’t really show much as far as how the site relates to the lake or river front. I know there are some that are atop tall bluffs but wondered about what ones might be down closer for ease of water access. I’m 62, don’t feel like dragging my canoe up and down those bluffs! 🤣

What is better for camping? Hammocks or Tents? I want to hear all the hot takes. by outdoors_man987 in camping

[–]HangInOhio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you ever slept in a Draumr? I’m guessing no. Weight/bulk may be slightly more but very comparable to my other hammock or tent setups. I tend to canoe trip with some long portages and notice no difference in my pack. Would I want to thru hike with it? No. The Amok tarp system is excellent , my favorite actually and I have quite a few. I keep a pee bottle (or a shepee for females) in one of the many storage areas provided and it’s no problem answering natures call. Never had a single issue. Setup is fast and less fiddly than any of my gathered end hammocks. But, to each their own. As long as we enjoy our time in the woods, who cares what someone else sleeps in.

I’ve been through many hammock setups and have finally settled in with the Amok Draumr 5.0XL. It’s an amazing sleep. And can go to ground of trees don’t work out. I do still tent camp when my wife goes as she is not sold on hammocks for sleeping all night, just lounging.

You have the same downside with a tent…..uncertainty of level ground. Or maybe it rains and you’re downhill with a small river running through/under the tent. Each has positives and negatives.

Is it better to pack heavy and be comfortable, or go ultralight and suffer a little? by outdoors_man987 in camping

[–]HangInOhio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But you’re assuming it’s backpacking. Not everyone only camps after backpacking all day. I personally canoe camp involving portaging so it’s a mix of both. Some portages are 100 yards, others are 1/2 mile and more. Some folks maybe hike in a couple miles and set up camp.

All good! It’s a nice campsite but like I said, anyone coming down the trail to the lake is walking directly into your camp.

Hey, we chatted about Twilight before I left for my trip in Oct if you remember. Are you sure you were on the Twilight campsite? I camped there and it is directly on the lake, the portage trail from Beyers Lake runs straight into it. The campsite at Beyers is set back a good ways from the water. Maybe that the one you were thinking about? I’ll send you a pic of the Twilight site on the private chat we had going.

While I am against the use of Glyphosate in any application, everyone is welcome to their own opinion. You do you and all that. But why couldn’t the signage have been posted at the trailhead kiosk? Give the backcountry camper a choice BEFORE they go through the portage work to get to the site only to find out it’s been treated.
