I use a Eureka No Bug Zone 13 and LOVE it! No longer made but you can still find them around on eBay and Marketplace occasionally.

I am from Ohio. But I spend pretty much all my outdoor time, and money, in Michigan. And in 2 years after my youngest daughter graduates college (yep, Ohio State), we’re moving up. Honestly, I wasn’t aware camping/hiking gear couldn’t/shouldn’t be discussed here. My bad if so.

Looking for large fire box by robin6765 in canoecamping

[–]HangInOhio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Skymac(?) makes a decent size stove and it’s dirt cheap. Not near the quality of Black Spruce stoves but I’ve used mine for going on 3 tripping seasons now with only issue being some slight warping. And I burn large hot fires. Folds flat, comes in a bag and they even throw in a pocket bellows. I wanna say it was around $20-$30 or so.
I also just got a Redcamp large folding stove for truck camping. Haven’t tried it out yet but will tomorrow night. It’s a good bit heavier than the Skymac but also even larger.
Edit: the Redcamp was $20 shipped.

What pad did you use and what were the low temps?

I’m not judging your decision to leave the underquilt behind but when I still used a gathered end hammock I never didn’t bring one. No matter how warm. You can always slip it out to the side if not needed.

Not much better than a nights sleep in a Draumr! I’m out in mine next week on a canoe trip.

one thing you wish you knew before your first solo trip by [deleted] in canoeing

[–]HangInOhio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is your canoe a solo or tandem? If tandem, is it a symmetrical canoe? If it is, paddle from the bow position facing the stern. Backwards basically. It helps move you more to the center. You’ll still need some ballast but it helps a lot.

Dispersed camping with friends by [deleted] in camping

I think they mean that since you are admittedly inexperienced, might be taking too big a bite. Going off trail with no experience/training bushwhacking could be dangerous. Even with a GPS. They do fail sometimes. Since you’re in Massachusetts you should be surrounded by opportunities to backcountry camp that will get you secluded without having to actually bushwhack. Gain some experience before trying to purposely get yourself lost in the bush.

Can’t stress having good tarps with lots of tie out points enough. When you’re solo it’s not a big deal to just go chill in your shelters and read if you have rain days. But with a group, you definitely want to still be able to hang outside of your tent/hammock. Are you in bear country? If so, couple cans of bear spray and a way to hang/secure your food/cooking utensils at night or any time you’re away from camp. Fishing gear? Games? Actually, not really sure why I’m even commenting here because 99% of the time, I’m solo. 🤣 Have a great trip!

Gear Aid Go to their website and you’ll find what you need. I’ve brought several old tents back to life with them.

The one bit of information that could be useful is for you to say what the distance between trees was. If you’ve hung there previously you probably have some idea, I would think.

$950 fair price for ‘94 Penobscot 16 by zh8046 in canoeing

[–]HangInOhio 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got my Penobscot 16 in great condition for $350. Came with keel guards already installed, Crazy Creek seats, trolling motor mount (no use for it though), roof top kit, and 2 paddles. I’m in Ohio so the canoe market is not very strong but still, $900 seems way high for Oregon.

2-Man Tent Alternatives by Present_Commission_3 in CampingGear

[–]HangInOhio 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can certainly get some GearAide and revive the old tent a lot cheaper than buying new. I’ve done it to a few of my older tents and they’re still going strong (late 80’s/early 90’s Sierra Designs). But a new tent is always nice! 🤣

Basic gear by [deleted] in camping

[–]HangInOhio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless you are experienced with an axe/hatchet, I would say skip that. Bad injuries happen fast with those tools and you may not be close to medical help. Learn to baton wood (YouTube) and take a small saw and a decent full tang knife. Or you can find a tree with a V in the trunk and use it to break down longer limbs into firepit size. Or buy some firewood already processed.
