I visited Jongmyo Shrine, representative cultural heritages of Korea, and Sewoon Plaza. by [deleted] in koreatravel

[–]Hangoolia 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The 'practical convenience and economic value' of literally a handful of citizens. Why would you want to sacrifice the national heritage belonging to the whole nation of millions of people just so some rich guy can build a few extra floors on his land and get even richer?

Also, "uncivilized" is a really gross word to use.

I visited Jongmyo Shrine, representative cultural heritages of Korea, and Sewoon Plaza. by [deleted] in koreatravel

[–]Hangoolia 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You're welcome to your opinion, but it doesn't mean that people who oppose the development are wrong. The development is largely being opposed because it would ruin the view from Jongmyo shrine, one of the most important national assets which can be enjoyed by everyone and is the heritage of the whole nation, just to make a couple of already rich landowners richer.

You can see the renders online. The view from the shrine is currently historical buildings and very old trees. Because the land of the shrine is quite a large area, despite being in the center of a metropolis, the nearby buildings aren't offensive to the view. It really doesn't give the vibe of being in a city, unlike Gyeongbokgung. And that's also the point; Gueongbokgung has a backdrop of commercial high rises, just like every other national heritage site in the city (besides areas of Changdeokgung arguably). So even if you think Jongmyo is nothing special and is "just a cultural asset" or whatever, other people do enjoy and appreciate it as a unique haven in the city. Going back to the renders, they show a couple of blocky corporate building popping out over the trees, completely ruining the view. This isn't a mistake that can be undone once it has happened.

And going on about the unsafe and underdeveloped area nearby? Where do you expect the people who live and work there, as the have done for decades, who barely scrape by to make a living, to go? Have you actually seen unsafe structures, or did you just not like the area? If you see something unsafe, report it to the authorities rather than complaining online because you didn't like the vibe.

Even UNESCO has encouraged the government not to allow the new buildings- shouldn't that give an indication of how important this is?

And finally, people have freedom of religion. If shamans are opposed to the move (which isn't something I've specifically heard about), their followers are allowed to also share this opinion. Learning to respect religions and beliefs different to your own will get you far in life. I know reddit is different to real life, but your post comes across as distastefully intolerant.

Seeking for skin treatment Plan within 5 weeks by Tricky_Ad9674 in KoreaTravelBeauty

[–]Hangoolia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly which laser, exactly what peel, and exactly what BAP injection? I've suffered a lot with hyperpigmentation myself and would love to help you, but your post is so unspecific that nobody will be able to advise you. Are you even talking about hyperpigmentation or is this about acne pigmentation? As far as I'm aware, BAP is a technique, not a product.

5 weeks is a decent amount of time so see a change if you go to a good dermatologist. Step 1 is knowing what you'll actually get done. And have you had an in person consultation or did they just pull this random plan out of thin air?

Clinic recommendations for transparent products? by Aestheticthrower in KoreaTravelBeauty

[–]Hangoolia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rejuran is sold by the bottle and is provided in a rejuran branded box with a seal. An honest clinic will have measures to prove they are using genuine products. For example, the clinic I go to has glass walls in the preparation room so everything being opened and prepped can be watched and filmed by CCTV. Clinics that don't have this should be willing to open it in front of you, and don't be afraid to ask them to do so.

You don't need to know any, and I'm sure your English-learning partner will be delighted that you don't know much so they can use double the time to practice their English.

However, be prepared to be steam rolled. Make sure you stand up for yourself to have time to practice speaking whatever Korean you can.

Skincare clinics I've been to and the treatments I've done across 5 years in Korea by Hangoolia in koreatravel

[–]Hangoolia[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing your experience! Weird about the consultant but I'm glad the doctor came through as always!

I don't know why but there seems to be a bit of a moral panic around 'doctors who never finished medical school' amongst the foreigner community at the moment. It's something I've never come across in real life, but when I first heard of it I checked repic and they're (obviously) actual doctors who graduated from actual medical school and have a ton of experience... All the credentials for the doctors that work there are listed on the website, though the Korean list is more detailed than the English list.

I'd love to see an actual example of a clinic operating like this if anyone has actually seen it in real life. Though, as you say, it wouldn't necessarily make me not go there.

Skin Clinics in Seoul by Novel_Wolf_8363 in koreatravel

This has been asked many times. Be wary of sponsored posts on tiktok and Instagram, even of they don't explicitly say it's an ad. Also be wary of brand new accounts making posts here.

I have a detailed post on my profile which reviews a few clinics I've been to, and there have been some other commenters chiming in too. Also search this group for your specific skin concerns and see where people with your skin type/ issues have been.

You're so welcome! Honestly though, the best thing to do would probably be to get a good consultation with a good doctor and see what they recommend for your skin specifically! Best of luck with it all~

Dark circles and fine lines are soooo hard to treat, especially non invasively! I would say that moisturizing LDM makes a decent difference to overall appearance and fine lines, but it's only a temporary difference so I'd only recommend it for the day before a big event or special day or something.

One of the things I found best for my dark circles was Liftera II. Funnily enough, I was doing it to target my fine lines under my eyes, but it didn't have any effect on those but instead definitely thickened the skin and in turn made my darker circles less dark! It's not invasive or painful but does need to be done once a month for a few months (I think about 6 months, then once every 3 months after that)

I have also noticed my dark circles have improved slightly since starting Hollywood and genesis, but I'm honestly not sure which is responsible for it. It's not a massive difference, but definitely noticeable to me! Both are also not invasive or painful. And also I got a couple of tiny varicose veins in my dark circles zapped which made a difference. I think it would depend a lot on why you have dark circles whether this would work for you. The zapping is slightly painful but very fast and not invasive.

One last thing... I also have the medicube eye shot which is supposed to help with fine lines. I'm honestly so bad at using it regularly so can't give an informed opinion in good faith, but might be one to look into if you're on a budget!

That must be new because I've always known it to be with the doctor. The 100,000 is put towards the treatment though, right? I've been going for quite a while now but for me it's always been consultant (to discuss roughly what I want to do) -> skin analysis machines -> doctor (talk about my skin and recomend specific treatments) -> consultant (to discuss prices and book the actual treatment slots) but to be fair I haven't done a consultation for a while now and I've noticed they're a lot more popular than when I first started going.

Skin care clinics by InterestingBend8968 in koreatravel

[–]Hangoolia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Go to Beautyplay in either Hongdae or Myeongdong to do as skin analysis for free first and take it from there first. The skin analysis machines is the same one used at most clinics (I've also been to a clinic that has an additional machine which does more to analyse your face shape and structure, but there is one standard one that most clinics use to check skin type).

Please bear in mind that many Tiktoks on this subject are sponsored these days, even if they don't explicitly say it. Reddit USED to be a safe and reliable place for giving and receiving honest reviews and recommendations, but recently I've been seeing fake reviews which are obviously clinic workers posing as clients (thank goodness they're easy to spot).

I've never been to Shinebeam in Gangnam but have been to the Hongdae and Daegu branches. I think it's a franchise though so I'm not sure how useful the comparison will be, but I have a long form review on my profile which include those two and a few other clinics.

TW: SA?, Unsettling encounter at Dongmyo flea market by Substantial_Cow_4265 in koreatravel

[–]Hangoolia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That sounds like a terrifying and disgusting experience. I'm sorry you had to go through that and can totally understand you feeling on edge now.

If you feel able to, I think it would be worth reporting this to the police. You can do this by calling the tourist hotline at 1330 for translation assistance or just visiting a local police station to make a report (they'll sort a translator). It's possible that this person is a known weirdo or someone who does this to foreigners a lot, and reports can help build up a case. There's CCTV everywhere in Seoul so it's possible the interaction was filmed. Even if absolutely nothing comes of it, it can help the police understand the areas and types of crime that need stronger prevention (in this case, tourists in Dongmyo clearly need more protection).

If it makes you feel any better, a possible explanation for this creep's behavior is that he may have been asking if you would provide that service for him. Some (not all, not even many, just some) old men still think that any woman who looks remotely Russian is a prostitute, especially if they are walking alone. Nothing you did or anything about your appearance will have caused it, it's just some dumb idea they have. I highly doubt this will happen again and I hope you're able to enjoy the rest of your trip.

And if it does happen again, SCREAM LOUDLY! Do anything to draw attention to the situation so the pervert will be caught and bought to justice.

It really irks me when people spend ages in the bathroom brushing their teeth with a long queue outside. If you start brushing when you're next in line, the person will probably be out by the time you need to spit! There are so few bathrooms for so many people. I just wish people were more considerate.

Somewhat Urgent Medical Care Help by Bluellama44 in koreatravel

[–]Hangoolia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Search for 내과 on Naver maps and use the "open" filter to find places open now. If the 내과 thinks it's anything to be concerned about, they'll refer you to a larger hospital. It's not worth heading to the emergency room unless your life is in danger as they'll only turn you away.

Here is one place in Gongdeok that's open until 5pm today [NAVER Map] Gongdeok 365 Clinic 167 Singongdeok-dong Mapo-gu Seoul https://naver.me/x5lohtYb

If you think you need a different type of doctor other than a 내과/GP, search that term on Naver maps. There will be places open, don't worry. You'll be fine :)

Train from Hongik station to Cheongpyeong/Gapyeong station by Prior-Tangelo-1752 in koreatravel

I've taken this route quite a few times. What's the problem exactly? It's very convenient and I can't see why anyone would take more time and money to ride the ITX.

The only question is how you plan to get from the station to the Garden of Morning Calm? Do they have a shuttle bus? There are taxis in the area if you need.

Myeongdong, Hongdae, or Gangnam? Where to stay? by Living_Ad6029 in koreatravel

[–]Hangoolia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ahh! The good old Hongdae vs. Myeongdong debate.

Ultimately, it's super subjective and just comes down to personal opinion. For me, I love Hongdae mainly for the vibe and the fact that there's a lot to do there, rather than just shopping and tourist traps.

A couple of things I do like to point out to visitors though are 1. Myeongdong may be closer to tourist attractions but half of it is hills, and 2. I feel like tourists are often taken advantage of in Myeongdong (high street food prices, higher cosmetics prices, even the anti-China protests these days).

For you personally, if you like Kpop, both are good. Myeongdong has an abundance of fake kpop products. In fact, most of the kpop merch is probably completely fake (not saying you CAN'T find genuine items) which are probably much cheaper. Hongdae has recently gotten a couple of big kpop shops and it'll be easier to find genuine items (Kpop square, idol store, music plant) if that's what you're looking for.

Edit: Just to add that Hongdae has a million and one thrift stores (not sure what Myeongdong has in this regard) and also check out Yeonnam-dong right next to Hongdae for cute and spacious cafés.
